Are you on a roll Dave?

Northern California, CA

Something I've meant to ask several times......

How do you determine whether to have thumbnails or merely asterisks appear on a forum?

I'd like to request that the Cactus & Succulent Forum be thumbnail enabled please?

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

Oh, that would be so wonderful. May I add my plea, as well?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

ask and ye shall receive ;o)

Northern California, CA

You guys are just way too good to us. :-)

Thx

Thank you, Terry!

Wow! had i known it would be this easy, i would have asked. i had often wondered and thought it would be a great idea! thanks to Happenstance and of course, thanks to Terry & Co. debi

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

Why don't all the forums have a uniform look? I always wondered that as well.

Hey Terry, come to "blu", we are shooting for history, but will accept histeria.

This has been asked before, but I will bring it up one more time since there are changes being made to to the plantfiles. There are are many plants that don't have appropriate checkboxes. The one that is really needed is "Direct sow as soon as the ground can be worked." which means as soon the soil dies out a bit after the spring thaw. English Peas, beets etc are examples although there are probably many ornamental annuals in that category. Direct sow after the last frost is way too late for these plants in most areas of the USA.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Thanks, FD - you're right, it does need to be added. However, unless Dave says otherwise, I don't think I can edit the checkbox list - only he can.

Dave, if you can add this to the Propagation checkboxes, it needs to be inserted as Option 16 or 17, with the others all moved down. (And if you say it's okay for me to scoot everything down one and insert this, I'll be happy to do it ;o)

Northern California, CA

Pushing the envelope here and rolling the dice again to see whether you guys would also consider thumbnails for the Orchid Cactus forum as we approach the major bloom season for holiday cacti and then sooner than we might think the Epis will be back.

Thx.....she says sheepishly while the word "greedy" dances in her head.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I've added the thumbnails (I was kinda surprised we didn't include that when the forum was set up, but I was happy to do it now ;o)

Northern California, CA

You are a Prince!

Thx!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Ummmm, make that a Princess, please....unless you're talking about Dave - I think Trish would say he's a Prince *grin*

Northern California, CA

LOL!

Sorry Terry, I'd don't usually "guffaw", but I just did.

....... it was an error of haste and skipping to the bottom line to see it was done!!

You are so right....I don't think Princess applies to Dave, nor does Prince apply to you, but you are both equally responsive to the constant requests from your membership.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

No problem...I suffer from occasional gender confusion from members, because I spell my name like a guy would. (Which is my own fault - my parents spelled my nickname Teri. However, as a kindergartner I decided (rashly) that *I* could choose how to spell my nickname. I've been paying the price for that single rebellious act for 30-some years now ;o)

Northern California, CA

This was not gender confusion on my part, merely a state of general confusion mixed with a sense of plant euphoria after spending several hours on DG. :-)

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Ahh but Terry we could always go back to the old days with Go_vols. lol

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Chuckle. I suffered from gender confusion with that 'un, too. And after today......oooooh, I don't think we should mention the v-o-l-s. Not a good day to be a TN Vol :-(

Northern California, CA

A couple of years ago when I was a brand new member, I did a lot of reading of old posts and was slightly confused (not surprising!) until I caught onto Terry's "other" ID. I still have to stop occasionally and get a mental image of members who have changed their ID's since I joined.......George4tax comes to mind! (Hi George!) Here's hoping I've remembered that correctly!

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

Hey Terry, while you are here.....Why don't all the forums have a uniform look? Now that bandwidth isn't an issue, couldn't all the forums have thumbnails?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Well, not all forums allow pictures, and some really don't lend themselves to pictures. We can strive for uniformity in many of our forums, but it'll never be 100% uniform. If there are other forums that would benefit from having thumbnails, please suggest them here and we'll be happy to look at each one on a case-by-case basis ;o)

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

I didn't think there were THAT many forums without thumbnails, but I was surprised. I quickly flipped through each forums home page, and informally noted how many *s I saw within the first couple of scrolls.

Terry, I counted 21 for sure and 3 more that could go either way. The one that floored me was HOSTAS!! No thumbnails for Hostas? Nearly every thread has a photo.

Do you want me to list the others out, or do you want to look at each for yourself?

I understand some wouldn't: Parking Lot, Dirt Cheap, Computer Talk, Jokes, Welcome Mat, General Discussion, Soil and Composting, ect.

What do you think?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I added thumbnails to Hostas. I guess the one concern I have about showing the thumbnails is it may inadvertantly encourage people into posting their plant photos in a forum instead of PlantFiles. Don't get me wrong - there's nothing wrong with sharing your pictures in one of the forums, but threads tend to fall by the wayside over time, and it's a shame when a picture is submitted to a thread, but not to PlantFiles.

A few years ago, Dave set up the process to automatically create a thread for each photo submitted to PlantFiles so people could add their pictures once and then discuss them, effectively eliminating the hassle of double-posting the picture to PF and to a forum. I just hope showing the thumbnails in each forum doesn't eventually detract from submissions to PlantFiles ;o)

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

What about a little reminder under the Image Box?

"Would this image contribute to PlantFiles?"

And maybe a check box that could take them right to the PlantFiles Home Page? That way you would have to think about doing it right then and there, instead of "oh I'll add this later".

Hmmm....still thinking here...send fire trucks, lol.

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

Oh! And THANK YOU Terry! I can't believe nobody else had requested it.

Please excuse my bad manners! My momma did teach me better than to ask for seconds before thanking for the firsts. Shame on me.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Would somebody please explain to this computor challenged individual about 'thumbnails' I under stand what they are in general but cant see how to access them in a forum?

Thank you!

Terry,

I'll add "Direct sow as soon as the ground can be worked." as option 16 soon. Please don't change anything, as each and every plant has to manually changed after changing the order of checkboxes. It's a real disaster if it's not planned and executed by me. :)

dave

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

EACH and EVERY plant? All 110,890 of them??

I can't find a clean enough word to express that.

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

Thank you for the hosta thumbnails! We hostaholics appreciate it very much!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

morning_gayle, if I understand it correctly it's not every plant in PlantFiles, but it is every plant that has a propagation method checked off below the point where this one is going to be inserted.

I don't know how many plants that is; Dave can run reports to find them and make the necessary changes. It's still a very big number, but not quite the entire PF universe.

This is part of the reason that I am loathe to add new checkboxes to PlantFiles, unless we're setting out new checkboxes for an entire group of plants, and willing to "wipe the slate clean" for the existing entries that will be included.

The other part of my heel-dragging is knowing what it's going to take for that new checkbox to become appropriately checked off for existing entries, which may number in the thousands. (And that usually is a manual process.)

We tried really hard to seriously think through every checkbox you see in PlantFiles when we first devised the basic entry form you see today.

But of course, we're human - over time we've realized we overlooked some things. So now it's a matter of weighing the benefit of adding a new checkbox against the expense (in time and energy) to add it and then check it off for the affected entries.

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

I can't tell you how much I admire the dedication displayed by all of the Admins here. And I am very grateful for it.

This is finished!

"Direct sow as soon as the ground can be worked." is now option #16.

dave

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

And an enormous cheer was heard around the world ;o)

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

Cool and THANK YOU!!!
