"Home" tab not working for me.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Dave or anyone else who might know the answer,

I can't seem to get the "home" tab to update my threads. It will take me back to my home page, but the threads aren't updating. Also, when I tried to reply to an email it looked like my reply didn't post when I went back to the mail. I hit the refresh button on my browser and then my reply showed up. I have restarted my computer thinking that maybe that would take care of it, but it didn't. Is it just me who's having this problem? If so, do you know what I could do about it?

Thanks,
Mendy

Hi, Mendy - what browser are you using? (It kind of sounds like your browser is storing an older (cached) version of the page....

I am using IE. I'll try FF and see if it still happens.

OR, just clear the cache...

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Well, it doesn't happen in FF, but I prefer IE. How do I clear the cache?

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Should be in Preferences...

I mostly use IE, and sometimes the home tab doesn't update the first time I click on it. I can tell by the time. I just hit the home tab again and it updates.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

That has happened before too, but not like this. I can wait a full minute and click the home tab again and still isn't updated.

Ok, I must be blind, where do I find Preferences? ;-)

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Sorry, I don't use IE anymore... much too slow compared to Firefox.

I think darius means 'Tools' > Internet Options > General [Tab] > History > . . .

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

So, I should go there and clear the history? My DH just told me that he went there last night and deleted files...thinking it would make things run faster. Was this the wrong thing to do? Should he have deleted cookies instead?

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

Depends on what the files he deleted were.
No harm in deleting all the cookies; you just may need to log in again some places.
You can delete all ' Windows' / 'Local Settings' / 'Temp Internet' files and 'Windows' / 'Recent' files.

You probably also have a 'Clean Manager' under 'Start' > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup.
That will do some of it for you.
Good luck!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

He said it didn't give him an option of which files to delete. Any way to find out what's missing and how to get it back?

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

If the "it" you are talking about is the "Clean Manager" which I am talking about, then you need not worry, although that should have given him the option to choose.

If we are discussing Windows, then there is a Recycle Bin. You go there, sort by Date and re-instate the latest entries, the dates and times coinciding with when your DH did the deed.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

The "it" I was talking about isn't the "Clean Manager." What he did was went to Tools>Internet Options>General (Tab)>Temporary Internet Files>Delete Files (Button). But it looks like you already said that would be ok to do.

Yes, we are discussing Windows and I looked in the Recycle Bin, but there isn't anything in it.

Would deleting those files that he deleted have anything to do with my browser not auto refreshing now?

What your DH did is fine. What is ailing your browser is a question for Milan:

Just mail him a link to this thread.

Thanks so much Ulrich, I'll email him.

Deleting the temporary internet files doesn't cause the No refresh.
My guess is that your refresh options got changed therefore try this:

IN IE, Click on "Tools", then "Internet Options...", On the "General" Tab cick on "Settings..." under the "Temporary Internet Files" section, put a check mark beside "Every Visit to the Page", click "OK" and "OK" again.
Now it should refresh your page every time. (At least I hope so :)

Wow, that was easy! Yes, it had been changed to "never refresh," but it's refreshing every time now. Thank you SO much Milan!

Thank you to Ulrich, Terry, JoanJ, and Darius too for looking at the thread and trying to help. I really do appreciate it. :-)

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

That is very refreshing to hear.

BTW, mine is set to 'Automatically' and works fine. I wonder about the difference.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

LOL Ulrich!

I was wondering the same thing.....didn't know if I should set it to "automatically" or "every visit." Seems to be working fine though on "every visit."

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Mine is set on automatically too. Since mine doesn't always refresh on the first try, and I have to hit the home tab again to get it to refresh, I'm wondering if I should try "every visit". I was waiting to see what the outcome was of those who did change theirs to 'every visit'. I might change mine and see what happens.

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

I do have to hit the 'Refresh' button to update at times, but maybe it is good to have control over that. I'll probably go with "If it works don't fix it".

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

That was my thought exactly, Ulrich. But I don't know what mine was set to before. I have noticed that I do still have to refresh if I go back to the homepage too quickly, but I think I remember Dave saying that was part of the "timer" on DG......I think it is set for 5 seconds or something like that.

Every 10 seconds it updates the "viewed thread" system.

In reality, it's more like 5 seconds, since you'll view the thread somewhere inside the 10 second timeframe...
