DAVE .. A request/suggestion - # 1 of 2

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

The implementation of a 'slide-show' viewing OPTION .. available to access/use to view the images within PlantFiles -?-

Would certainly seem to be a most wonderful feature to 'enable' .. should one desire.

Especially, when there are .. say, 12 + images to view.

I think that would be a wonderful option!

In fact, this issue was raised at least once before in the Plantfiles Forum, but I think it got lost at the time since there was such a heavy load on the existing servers. Not a problem now, though... ;)

I raised this one about the same time as Katrina hit and I think it got lost in the aftermath. I think it would be a great way to see all the pics in PF, sometimes there are a lot and they are all relevant to what you are researching.

I don't know what you mean by slide-show.

There are over 86,000 pictures in PlantFiles. You want a slideshow of them all?

Spokane Valley, WA(Zone 5b)

Here's my interpretation, which may differ from that which Magpye intended. :)

Take a particular entry, such as Snapdragons, which has 23 photos attached to it. http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/44/index.html

I'd like to select one of the pics to enlarge it, then be able to click on a Previous or Next button to bring the neighboring pic into view. This way, I can cycle through all 23 of the pics without scrolling up and down the long left column of pics.

(Zone 8b)

No not all at once, I meant in each specific plant group. For example http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/83073/index.html has 3 pictures. It would be nice to be able to view them in a continuous session rather than click in and back every time.
Thats just the first multiple I found btw. Its particularly where there are 12 - 20 images that going back and forth is so tedious. - for us lazy idle whatsits anyway!! :>)))

PS This was my original request http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/541525/

I thought the idea sounded vaguely familiar...I found Tuttifrutti's thread (finally!) here: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/507446/ which I think lays out a pretty clear idea of what is being proposed.

Ah yes, I remember that. I'll go read that thread.

Great idea! Hope it is possible. :-)

Or like Okus suggested, maybe the second page of thumbnails could be run horizontally, 5 to a row or however many would fit in the same width as a typical full-size image. So instead of scrolling up and down, you could just click on each one to expand it more easily....

Done :)

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Yea!!! Thanks, Dave.

(Zone 8b)

Thanks Dave - and so quick too which proves your not one of us lazy whatsits! :>))

Spokane Valley, WA(Zone 5b)

That's it, Dave! I sure wish you had implemented it five minutes earlier, though, 'cause I had to step away from the computer at that time. ;-)

Thank you!

Dave,
I like the new feature, but there seems to be a slight problem with it. It stops one image short of the last one. The second last image has no link to
- » Next image
only to
Previous image « - - -

If you click directly on the last thumbnail, you get the last image, and it has a link back to the previous, but it does not get included in the 'slide show' if you start at the first image.

Here is an example of a second last image:

Good report, Ken. This is fixed!

And would it be possible to add the feature to the bottom of the photo? (As long as we are airing the wish list, lol)

mg

Good call, mg. It's done.

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I didn't want to seem petty, but I'm spending alot of time in PF trying to identify stuff and plan for next years garden wish list.

You are so cool Dave!

mg

You're very welcome. :-)

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

This is great. Thanks for the change.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Thanks

Don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth but is there anyway you can click on next without the image scooting back down where you have to scroll to see it?

trunnels: that is your browser doing that, and I don't have control over it, alas.

dave

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, darn.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Well I've got to get to the PF and check it out. You never fail to amaze me Dave.
Thanks,
Sidney

Thank you for the kind words, Sidney. :-)

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

This is so cool Dave!! You are da man for sure. lol

Now, are you still thinking about the Begonia Forum for us? hint...hint.

Donna

Terry handled that. :)

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Yes, Dave, I did see that. Thank you for letting her start our new forum and giving us your blessing. :-)

So, did you come back with the 2 older servers and hook them up with the 2 new servers. Hope all is finished for you for awhile.

Donna

The two other servers are still sitting patiently in Pennsylvania.

On the 27th they'll be taken offline and shipped to me; a couple days later I'll take them to Dallas.

By november 1st, all 4 servers should be in Dallas.

dave

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Thanks for the info. :-)

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

yeah, ummm, about that new forum. Hey, Dave - hope it's okay with you that I set up the Begonia forum. They were getting pretty rowdy!!!

(As y'all can see, I took the "better to beg forgiveness than seek permission" approach yesterday ;o)

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

ROFL Terry!

Hmmm Terry has powers.....hmmmm....

mg

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

That's what my DD used to say to me when she was a teenager......I was not pleased.....

Of course, now I use it......and it works......now DH is not pleased....LOL

Yes, Terry - that's perfect. I was happy to see you did that.

Dave

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

WOW.......I just tried it. FANTASTIC!!!!!!! Ü

Thanks Dave (and those who suggested it)

The slideshow should, starting now, keep your place on your page (in other words, you don't need to scroll down any longer).

(Using AJAX, for those who might be interested)

dave

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Ahhh, wunnerful .. master Dave !! .. works like a charm.

Trunnels and I (as well as many others) .. should be most pleased .. with the anti-scroll effect !!
