Holiday Cacti Gearing Up

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Donna: I picked up the Easters last spring - didn't know what they were - one is red the other pink and I have just been given another which supposedly is red but given away because it hadn't flowered. My others are a white and a coral which I think are Thanksgiving(I have some trouble telling the difference) An Apricot/white and a pale pink which are Xmas and an Orange which is probably Thanksgiving. And cuttings for a red Xmas. Iusually pick these up at places like Safeway when they bring them in in November and I just hunt for unusual colors! Sometimes hard to tell unless the flower is open. Does your yellow look like mine? There are quite a few different yellows and I am hoping to get a Lavender next year

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

I don't know what my yellow looks like because that's the one I got in a trade. Here is the link to my webshots.

Great pictures you guys......my yellow still has no buds this year, losing faith that it will ever grow up to be a big girl with posies.

Here are some updated images. I've moved the pots up onto the patio table, back into more shade to try and slow them down, but they appear to be determined to bloom and miss both Thanksgiving and Christmas this year.

Awesome pictures, Candy. I love the shimmering color of the first one and the neon color of the second one, and the one with the insect is just plain stunning. You are a fantastic photographer as well as a fantastic grower of plants.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Yep, you stole the words right out of my mouth, Clare! Stunning!!

Thanks ladies! We're totally socked in with fog/overcast this morning, with drizzly rain. I may go ahead and move these into the sunroom if the damp continues.

Here's one of mine today, Candy. This Thanksgiving one was about a month early:-)

Here's the epi bud that I told you about which is a really late one!

Lovely Clare! They do have their own calendars from year to year don't they? Here's one of mine on Halloween a couple of years ago:

Your little Epi bud looks just about the same size and the two I have. :-)

I really don't expcect them to do anything with the cooler weather coming on. :(

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

That's a pretty color there that you had on Halloween, Candy. I like the Gazebo in the background too. I guess I shouldn't hold my breath about the little bud then, huh? We're due to have some warm temperatures next week so maybe if it can hang on a little longer...that would be sweet.

Northern California, CA

Thanks Clare..... :-)

The "gazebo" is actually an old bird cage I picked up at a salvage yard. Here's an image from a couple of years ago:

Your pictures are ALL soooo beautiful.....and I couldn't stand it anymore. Ran out to WallyWorld and bought THREE LARGE ONES! =0) I feel better now.

LOL! Good for you Betsy, I'm so glad you are feeling better.

Here's another one that has started to open up.

And in amongst the bright fuschia is an interloper. As the buds age some of the lower tips turn fuschia, but it is sure more true red than some of my other "reds."

You know this is the only plant that makes me feel like a total failure.
Can't keep one for anything. Had a huge potfull last year that I bought at Lowes and there are 3 little pieces hanging on for dear life left.
All the others just rotted away bit by bit. I have vowed never to buy another knowing it will be its untimely demise. LOL

I bought a new one today at Safeway - looks like it might be a coral shade - might already have it but can't tell until the flower comes out. If I dont pick them up as soon as they come in they are sold! If I already have it then I have a gift for somebody!

That's 3 new colors this year so far!

Fair Lawn, NJ(Zone 6b)

I am so trying not to look at these gorgeous holiday cactus flowers... just a little glimpse...
look, look.....
They are just beautiful!!! You guys are killing me with those pictures.
I am truly running out of room.

I had another show the other day from my Epi oxy hybrid! Yippee! I love this plant!

I love all of the holiday cactus. This is one that my grandmother gave me. It is over 30 years old. it usually blooms at thanksgiving, it is a little early this year. I have been able to share cuttings for years.

Stop guys, you're killing me. The average lifespan for mine is 4 months.

Wow! 30 years old! That is so cool! That's a beautiful color, Betty.

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

It is really older than that, LOL. My Grandmother died in the early 70s.

I have had all of her plants for thirty years I just say that is how old they are. I am sure they are much older.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

That is so great. I think it is really special to have plants that long and to help you remember the giver. It's a great way to live on in the world after you've passed. I've planted a few trees -- one of which is a redwood called "Santa Cruz," which could reach 100 feet or taller in time. It will be here in the world long after I'm gone and is my little mark on the planet to say that I was here:-)

Merry Christmas!
My Christmas Cactus has it's 1st bloom of the season. The plant is loaded with buds about to open.
No signs of bloom on Easter Cactus, yet. Maybe for Lincoln's Birthday?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Well gee PotEmUp dont you think you could wait until after Christmas for that Easter cactus to boot up? Lets not rush the seasons! LOL!

I bought mine in bloom last April - when is Lincoln's birthday?

Fremont, CA(Zone 9a)

Lincoln's BD is in February. Guess it is sort of like Boxing Day to us. ;-}

Here we are a good ways into November and these pretties are putting on a good show, but will surely not be around for the holidays.

Awe, they are awesome! You should enter that pic in the photo contest, Candy. If I were you and didn't have to work, I would spend all day hanging out in your yard.

Northern California, CA

Thanks Clare!

I have yet to enter any in the photo contest, as I've been away from home this past week, but I have posted an image of the newest "cultivar" in my collection over on the C&S forum http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/556527/ :-)

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Awe, congrats on your new baby granddaughter, Candy. She sure is special and worth neglecting the plants for.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Clare, on the pic you posted in this thread oct 18th, 1:58, are the leaves on that cactus purple? that is absolutely gorgeous. I must have that!

Mt Zion, IL(Zone 5b)

Just wondering......anybody out there have a YELLOW bloomer large enough to spare cuttings for trade? =0)

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Hi Nery! That is actually a green Thanksgiving cactus that has been turned red by direct sun! It lives outside all year long, and that's what happens over a period of time. Here's a pic showing new growth. I actually gave this one to my mother, but then she went travelling for a while so I took it back so it wouldn't die while she was gone.

I just picked this up today. Not sure if you consider this yellow or peach.
