Interesting question on an email - what's your answer?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

How old would you be if you didn't know how old you are?

On the days I'm outside moving plants and sweating I'd be 35 to 40.
When I'm forced inside by weather and DG or the internet is down: 80. Unless a friend calls and then I'm 35 to 40 again!

Pirl, I know exactly what you are saying with this exception.

I feel young most all the time, certainly not my age. I work as a house painter so when I'm working I'm on the go all day. When I get out to gardening I can dig the whole yard in a day, plant things, pull weeds and whatever.

As long as I keep going, I can keep going. It's when I sit down for 15 minutes to catch up here or just have a beer, when I go to get up, my body seizes and I hobble around like something was broke.

Well, there might be one other thing.......when a new aquaintance sees my senior picture on the bookshelf, they want to know who the pretty girl is. Humph, they haven't a clue it was me.

I feel my age (all 26 years of it) but there are days Arlene after days of working in the garden I feel very sore, tired and old....

BTW - You start the best threads!

Mitch: I have nothing better to do. You must have heard about our endless rains! Now the radio reported we have had more rain in either 8 or 9 days than the previous five months. I will feel 90 when I have to unearth all the plants I merely "heeled in" before we left for Canada.

When we remodeled every room in this house I wanted (and got) a Jacuzzi Whirlpool. It's great for the nights when the body is weary. I must have more than 100 plants to get into their permanent homes as well as the entire Japanese "inspired" garden to do.

Molly: you are so totally right. It's only when we stop that it all seems to catch up with us. I believe in the old saying of, "It's not that you don't because you can't. You can't because you don't". It could apply to gardening, dancing the night away, or a number of other calorie burners. Once you stop you just don't want to start again. It takes a lot of motivation.

I never feel my age (62). If someone were to wake me up in the middle of the night and demand to know my age, I'd answer that I'm 19. (It was a very good year.)

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

ZuZu...I am with you, also 62. Everytime I count on my fingers to see how old I am, I always say "No Way!" and count again. Can't be. I'm only maybe twenty in my heart. Now my body tells a different story. LOL

My mother is 85, She talks of the days when she ran track and was a high jumper in high school. Now she can just barely walk with a walker. Ask her how old she is and she would say maybe 50. Ain't life great??? :~))

Well I would have to say I am various ages. My heart is 10, my body, well we just wont go there tonight, and my soul is ageless.

Picabo, on my mothers last birthday she told my son that she was celebrating her 46th anniversary of her 29th birthday. Somewhere in her 40's I think she honestly forgot her true age because she fibbed so much.

From the same email came this one: Old age is when former classmates are so gray and wrinkled and bald, they don't recognize you.

Have you ever been aware that when you're thrilled and excited over something you feel 17 and when you're depressed you feel your age more?

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Reminds me of that poem that goes something like "who is that gray haired stranger in the mirror" I can't believe next week I'll be seventy, when the inside of me is still the same mouthy brat ...I hate the aches and pains that follow when I spend a day digging or planting, or painting. At what age did we start going "ooof" when getting up out of a chair? What evil genie made my neck all wrinkly, when I hardly ever use it? What nasty plastic surgeon dragged his anti-liposuction machine in while I was sleeping and injected 20 pounds of someone else's fat on my hips? I'm sure it wasn't there when I went to bed. And don't get me started on how they've shrunk the type size in every phone book and newspaper!

I'm quite sure I'm only 35.

M5, in case I forget to tell you (which is extremely likely) congratulations on your 70th birthday, and make it a Blessed occassion!

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Thank you very much!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Bless you 70 times 70 and then some.

A friend always says similar things. She said when she looks in the mirror and sees this fat person she knows it's a trick because she was always "skinny". Well, maybe that's her view, but all of us seem to feel an EEEK with the whole mirror deal. Isn't that why God made Glass Wax?

(At least you and I know what Glass Wax is!)

Meezer, Happy Birthday!

I am sure your 35 also! Age is a state of mind they say, I have no mind, so I must be very young! haha My husband says I have Peter Pan syndrome, I live in a dream world where everything is perfect, I believe in fairy tales, love at first sight, miracles, I wish on falling stars and I get excited at Christmas just like a 7 year old would. I think its cause childhood wasn't so pleasant....and now I can live it with my children.

My Mom is 69, and she still rides her bike everywhere, she is very active playing with the kids outside...haveing skipping races, playing in creeks, etcs......and I think I am going to be the same way! At 45 I still climb trees, play soccer with my son, and I have just learned to take one day at a time.

Now, my body feels much older.....but my mind...I think I am 11 ! haha

Edited to say amazing how I see my Moms hand typing on my keyboard!

You have a lot to look forward to Deb! You also have a great role model. Playing with kids is a real tonic for all of us, regardless of age.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Debbie, be gratedul you see your mom's hands on the keyboard. I'm 58, and I see my Grandmother's hands!

You need a few months in Hawaii. Might not help your hands but it's worth a try.
