Brug Seedlings Blooming

Freedom, PA(Zone 6a)

Finally I have some of my brug seedlings blooming. To my surprise I really do like a few of them that I will keep to see how they do next year. Only 1 is Pink, 2 are orange and 1 is white, I do love them all, but have little room to keep them all. This brug is my Golden Lady X Unknown seedling, I didn't expect much because I didn't know who the daddy was, but it turned out to be a real beauty I think.

Very pretty flower! Love the color - we still don't have a good blooming double orange or yellow. Hopefully this one will be a good bloomer for you!

Same as above.

Thanks, I really was surprised to see it orange, I have been growing a HG for 2 years and have never seen it bloom, so this brug was a nice surprise.

Freedom, PA(Zone 6a)

This seedling is a Dr. Seuss X Becca Lynn, its about 8' tall so I didn't get close enough to the bloom to get a good picture.

very beautiful seedlings, congrats!

gorgeous, gorgeous blooms!

WOW.. I AM impressed and also encouraged...there is hope for doing all this work of growing them from seed and hand pollinating. They are all very nice - but I just LOVE the GL cross. I am really excited now..cause I have a HUGE pod on my GL from a cross I did of her with Adora as the daddy. Adora has the largest blooms I have ever seen on a brug and I'm hoping the size of this pod means these blooms will be large too and maybe..shhh..a double?

Thanks for sharing your beauties

Wow that orange double is gorgeous.

Freedom, PA(Zone 6a)

I only had one seed pod on my golden lady and only 10 seeds germinated. Out of the 10 seeds, 9 of the plants bloomed white, single blooms, and 1 was this double orange. So if I were you I would plant all the seeds that come out of that pod to see what you get. Next year I will try and hand Pollinate this brug with another of my orange seedlings. I think there are a few pods on this brug, but then again the bee's did it. I'm ashamed of myself for not paying attention to these seedlings this year. I don't know if the pods will stay on once I dig this plant and bring it into the house, might lose what's on there. Good luch with you Golden Lady pods.

Congrats on your seedlings. Great looking pictures.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

What a great show Cathy. You have so many nice ones.

Hold onto your GL whites if you like the form for another year of evaluation. I have tons of GL seedlings growing. The ones that are white, are really apricot. They changed when it got cooler. Also they started putting out lots of double blooms along with the single ones.

Your seedlings are real beauties, congrats!!!!

Congrats!! Thanks for sharing.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

Lovely work, they are all beautiful

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

They are all so beautiful! The first one is to die for drop dead gorgeous! I hope it thrives for you! I remember in the past your variegated suaveolens pictures. You had the biggest and prettiest plant I'd ever seen.

Freedom, PA(Zone 6a)

Thanks everyone!

Kell, I did notice some of the other Golden Lady blooms on a few of my plants did have apricot on the bottom of the blooms, but they are nothing to right home about. The blooms were very small, some had no tendrils, and were all single blooms. I am going to keep a couple of the white ones to see if they double next year. This orange one when it first bloomed it had one bloom and it was double, then I had to wait until this flush, didn't think it was going to happen before frost to see if it was going to be orange or yellow. The frist bloom was yellow on the outer skirt and the inner skirt was orange. These blooms all started out yellow then quickly turned orange.

Vee8ch, my variegated suaveolens did great the first year I had it, I bought it as a cutting and it grew like crazy, big, beautiful and full of blooms. This brug takes forever to come out of dormancy. I though it was dead for the longest time but its just very slow to wake up in the spring and grows very slowly. I'm only going to keep a cutting this year and keep it growing to see how it does for me. I just started to get buds on it after putting it in the greenhouse early March this spring. And now it's time to bring back into the house with out getting to see it bloom.

Really pretty!!! I love your beautiful double!!!

Magnificent!!! Congratulations.

Cathy I believe you are making a great choice to hang on to some of those seedlings in hopes they will eventually produce doubles. B. Species was the very best triple I ever grew. Sometimes it produced singles doubles and triples all at once. Unfortunately life interrupted and I lost interest in brugs for a spell. My x Species seedlings found better homes. Every report I received was singles. As far as I know they were all trashed after first flowers. It made me want to cry because I knew what their Species mom could do. Even then I questioned in my mind "Why couldn't the same trait be passed on?" And to top it all off Species crosses are extremely rare. Sadly I had to just let them go because I was not able to care for them. But I will always dream of what they might have matured to be.

suaveolens v. was always my favorite variegated brug but don't ask me why. I had it for 5 years and only saw 2 flowers. ... ha! I just love the leaves I guess.

Freedom, PA(Zone 6a)

This evening we dug my double orange out of the ground. It was really leaning so we put it in a big pot in the greenhouse and tied it up so it would stand tall. This brug is a couple feet taller than it's mama, but I might have gotten a above the Y cutting when I bought her. DH dug a huge root ball so I'm hoping it won't go into to much shock. I put it in the shady part of the greenhouse so it should do ok until I bring it into the house for a long winters nap. There are several buds on it that have not opened, so I'm hoping they stay on and bloom for me. The blooms on this flush went through a couple of heavy rains and they were really not as nice as they could of been.

I'm glad Kell let me know that the white blooming Golden Lady cross might double, I would have never thought that or considered keeping any of them.

I do love growing brugs from seeds, you never know what your going to get. I have a few seedling, well there 2 years old now that I grew from seeds that I bought from Susie and they are my favorite pink brugs and the other orange brug in the above post, it's tall and the blooms are large and smell wonderful. Next year I want to pollinate my double seedling with this orange brug.

Sorry to here about your plant, they are a lot of work and expensive to grow. When DH had his accident this year I had to learn how to spray for bugs, and everything else he does to keep everything growing beautiful. Was ready to give up most of my brugs and only keep the ones I really love, and I'm still considering not keeping all of the ones that I have. Variegated white S is one I'm not sure I'll keep another year, I really like my Peaches and Cream much better, the foliage is nicer and bloomed most of the summer for me and it never got any mites, that's a plus. And HG is on it's way out, I do have tiny buds on it now, but there is not enough time for it to bloom. That's 2 years with out blooms and not worth keeping any longer.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Aren't husbands the very best? Ellis was the only reason my brugs survived during that yucky time! lol! It did not kill me to lose those Species seedlings. It just felt like it would at the time.
I think Maya has been my favorite variegated brug as far as the number of flowers. Maya survived several freezes in my ghouse. Peaches & Cream did not preform as well for me. She died the first time she froze. :(
HG ... You are certainly not alone. I was told that not even it's namesake the HG in Germany grows this anymore.

Looking forward to future updates on your seedlings.

RICHMOND, VA(Zone 7b)

I admire you so much for your effort with seedlings! So much work, and so many possibilities you have to hold on to! The result with your dbl is a nice tribute.I am relieved in a way to have no seed pods this fall, so I'll have some space in my seedling/cutting garden in the spring. If you want me to try growing out some of the seeds, I'll pot them in my GH this winter. Perhaps taking cuttings from your successful hybrids is easier than keeping the whole plant, unless it has pods.
My HG is 3 years old, and has finally produced a large bud that I hope will bloom before frost; I have observed many tiny ones this summer, but they are extremely susceptible to infestation and heat, and drop off. The plant itself is hardy, but the tiny buds are very frail.
Congrats on a great new dbl!

Freedom, PA(Zone 6a)

Vee8ch I didn't know who you were until I read your DHs name, how are you? Do you like living in Florida? I do know the heartbreak of losing a plant, remember my variegated datura that died on me a couple of winters ago. It took me a long time to get over losing that plant. I watched that plant die and couldn't do anything about it. Could not get any of my cuttings to take, or the other rooting methods we tried. I guess it wasn't meant to be. At least this double orange should be a lot easier for me to root, I don't have any trouble rooting brugs, THANK GOD for that. This brug was a result of God sending the bee to do the pollinating with the right plant. So I would have to say that God was the hybridizer, not me.

This plant never skipped a beat, it never wilted, looks just like it did in the ground, beautiful. I'm hoping the seed pods stay on, they are tiny yet, will see. I'm guessing the seeds wont be ready for several months. Last year I left the seed pod on my Golden Lady and it ripened fine being dormant, so that's what I hoping these seed pods will stay and mature in the dormant state.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

These brug and dat losses do hurt badly sometimes. It's a good thing that time heals all wounds or we would all be belly up from broken hearts eventually!

Some people frown on brugs that do not have a complete history. I say come down off of the pedestal. If a bee can do it anybody can. lol! I definitely believe that God would use this bee to create a special brug just for you. I hope it has a long healthy floriferous life!

Some days I love FL and some days it really stinks. Depends on my mood! :)

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

ps ... Dear God please send me a Golden Lady brug and a an orange brug and special bee .... cause that's the only way I'll ever get a double that I could call my own! lol!

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Congratulations Cathy on your beautiful seedlings! I really like the color and the double flower on Golden Lady X Unknown. Also, beautiful pink bloom too!

Ozark, AL(Zone 8b)

As carter said, we really need a good blooming orange double! I hope this one trials well ! (I'm in zone 8 if you want to trial here ;) Funny not Ha ha that not so long ago HG was selling for big prices, and now most are sick and tired of waiting for it to bloom!
Mine is 5 years old (someone tired of it gave it to me!) and the only tiny buds it's ever finally had are falling off! Please Cathy, let this blessed bee cross be the one that sends ALL the HG's to the compost heap!!! (you're the mama, surely you have some influence??!!!)

Freedom, PA(Zone 6a)

I will have some cuttings from this brug, it has a few Y's that can be cut back, this brug did well for only being 8 months old. I want to let it finish blooming before I cut it back, there are several buds that will probably be open in a couple of weeks. I do have a few people in mind for the cuttings, I will email you when I'm ready to cut her back. Reading the Tuffy post I saw that 3 people trialed her, is that the way it goes?

Ozark, AL(Zone 8b)

There are no hard set rules on trialing that I know of, it's a case of seeing if she does as well better, or worse in different climates. On 2 of mine, I sent a cutting to PA,and IN for north, Texas and Ca for western climes, one to florida for the soil and intense heat, and of course had mine here for the heat and humidity. It also insures that at least one will survive!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Cathy you do not have to send cuttings out to anyone to trial. You can do it on your own which is how most oldtime serious growers do it. It does help to send 2 or 3 cuttings to other trusted growers that live in totally different zones. Cold and hot. That way it will give you a real good picture of many different environments and how they can affect your new brug. Your trialers will see things that you might miss. It is critical that the people you are trusting your brug to understand that it is for trialing purposes only. It is not released yet.
