Seed Snatchin' XV: Show Us Your Kits!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Ah, my snatchlings, you have progressed to building and equipment snatchin'! Wish I had that mixer up in this neck of the woods! I could sure use some old commercial greenhouse stuff. My little business is still in the dark ages, so antiquated stuff would fit right in!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

I want a greenhouse!! Waaa!! There is one at my dad's for under a thousand. I may look at it this weekend... My tropical plants grew this Spring - my house will be cram packed!!

I haven't brought in my plants yet and it was 33 degrees this morning! Frost on my car.. :( I was scared to even look on the deck. I will see what/if the damage is when I get home..

I would LOVE to have a greenhouse, too. I sort of mentioned it to my DH. Between him and my dad, they could build it quite easily.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Tell him that would make an awesome Christmas present!!

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

Oh, it would, but it will have to wait, if it happens at all. I really did overspend on the garden this fall, with soil and bulbs. Really.

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Okay, am I going to talk to myself? Where is everybody? I have been checking this thread daily, and no action for the past 10 days. Is everybody busy putting their gardens to bed? I have mine all cleaned up, still need to wash a few trays, but I brought the last in today. So tell what you have been doing.

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

Why, snatching seeds from the last of the garden, of course! ;-)

Really.

Vegas,NV Filbert, SC(Zone 7b)

I can hear you Defoecat. I have been so busy trying to keep up with the other threads that I forgot about this one. LOL

My gardens are at rest for the winter, that is except one lone Datura that just seems to buck the system at every turn. I have brought him inside and will see how he does through the winter.

No new sowing of seeds say DH. He wants me to back off from the garden expense here and bank it for the garden in SC. Makes sense on paper, we will see if reality will hold it.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

I, too, have put my gardens to bed. The temp has dropped down into the 20's, so my digging is over for a few months. I am, however, still harvesting seeds. I've got most all the garden seeds harvested, sifted out, and packaged up for trading! I still have some wild seeds to harvest.

My DH & I drove over to Cooper Landing, and I made him stop on the way so I could snatch some Achillea borealis seeds along the highway. I got some curly dock seeds, while I was at it. Today, I went out to the edge of our yard & harvested cow parsnip and large leaf avens seeds... just a few more types, and I'll have just about got all I wanted.

I've been busy making my seed packets and getting all my seeds ready to trade, but it seems I never get my 'want' list ready. It's pretty hard to trade seeds if you don't know what you want! Most all of my last year's seeds will go out as SASE or trade. As much as I love to snatch seeds, it's kinda nice to get on to the indoor stage. However, all this chaff mess is a pain in the neck, too.

At any rate, I'm back indoors, so I should have more time to visit on DG. I've pormised myself I'm going to spend more time on the forums and devote some time to the PF filling in data and adding photos. It's going to be a long winter here.

Center, TX(Zone 8b)

Glad to hear everyone is getting their beds ready for winter. I still can't do any winter sowing for a while. It's supposed to be in the mid 80's today and looking like it will stay that way for the next couple of weeks. Night time lows in the 50's so I'm holding off on sowing any seeds out side for fear they will germinate and then get kill.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

It's about 17F here, and windy, so with windchill, I'm sure it's much colder...no seed sowing here either, Brenda! Instead, I've packaged up the seeds I collected in the last couple of days. I'm going to have to re-order glacine bags pretty soon.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I'm new to this site..
This is the best reading I've ever done! LOL I know I fit right in.. even if I'm new. Everyone who rides in my car knows that water bottle in the back is marked with a huge X is for cuttings only. LOL I am NOT a theif.. I am spreading the beauty. I've been known to "snip" a lil twig and stuff it in the water bottle and even forget about it for a day or so in the car and it's still okay!
The celophane on a cigarette pack is great for seeds too. Thank you all for such a wonderful website!

Vegas,NV Filbert, SC(Zone 7b)

ZZ Welcome......
I never consider my snatches as theft. More like I donated my time to help with pruning and removal of said items.
I was told once that seeds keep in a the celophane from cigs has a negative impact on the seeds. Something about a tobacco or chemical reaction, I dont smoke so I never had the availablity of this but thought I would throw that info out there and see if you all have heard that also.

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Carat, never heard that, and I am a smoker, so have used the cellophane to collect seeds, then when I get home transfer to something else. Maybe long term, but the very design of them is not condusive to long term storage.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

I could believe that ciggy cellophane might be questionable for tomato seeds, since tobacco mosaic can transfer to them, but I think that's a bit of a stretch. Cellophane would be better than plastic bags for freshly collected seeds, because it is less likely you'd seal them up and get mold, etc. If I use plastic zips, I often forget to open them up when I get home...getting old!

Rockford, IL(Zone 5a)

Just got thinking here....why not use the children's lunch boxes for your clipping kits and put them in the trunk/boot of your vehicle. If you see something and you didn't carry anything in your pockets, and your backup in your vehicle would save you an extra trip back home.

Happy Hunting....

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Unless your kiddies get the wrong lunch box! They'll think you've put them on the Yule Gibbons diet.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

I am thinking of getting a tackle box to keep my goodies in.. A cheap plastic one that I can close well. My carboard box is starting to get ragged!!

Vegas,NV Filbert, SC(Zone 7b)

Right now I have a small box, similiar to a tool box. I am looking to get one a bit bigger, the tray in this one wont allow anything to be even the slightest bit higher or it wont shut. My friend is using a 5 gallon bucket with one of those new tool belt looking things around it. I looks and works good, a little more pricey then what I want to spend for my snatchin kit....

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Maybe we should be carrying something official so nobody asks questions. If you carry a tackle box up to a municipal building, they may bring out the bomb sniffing dogs! We ought to consider creating some sort of seed snatching totes with a shoulder strap!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Ah, yes, Carat... a bucket buddy! That's a good idea.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

That is a good idea!!

Starkville, MS

Add name tag - Landscape Inspector - and you are free to roam!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Propagation Control Manager

Vegas,NV Filbert, SC(Zone 7b)

ohhh, nice title. I think that will work...

Center, TX(Zone 8b)

How about "BUG INSPECTOR" and if anyone ask you can tell them you've found bugs and you're taking them in for closer inspection! Take your seeds and run!

Starkville, MS

And maybe a lab coat - you know the ones with the *big* pockets! Be sure to carry a magnifying glass to keep it all official!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

How about a teeshirt that says 'Seeds for the World'. It infers some benevolent organization, but they way we trade on Dave's, these seeds see many parts of the globe!

Edited for typo.

No seed snatching for me today. The weatherman says its going to 30 tonight, so - all my good intentions of getting the greenhouse nice and clean and a plan for where things would go - out the door. As usual, I will have to spend days rearranging every thing because I had to rush too much. I still have more to bring in, but they are in safe places. I leave the monsters til last. Once they come in, floor space is *very* limited. One split leaf philedendron takes up a good four foot space by itself.

As you can see, it needs some straightening up!

I am seriously looking at the lab coat. Just would it be white, or do you think a nice green??? Decisions Decisions.....

Starkville, MS

Oh, the green - to help mask any sprigs sticking out

Vegas,NV Filbert, SC(Zone 7b)

oh good point

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

tgif, you've got quite a jungle there! I've already got everything in that comes in. Our winter starts earlier than most. Anything outdoors is asleep or dead!

Starkville, MS

RATS! And other words I can't put in without getting slapped on the wrist! The temp only went to 41 last night! I could have spent yesterday getting the greenhouse better set up before bringing everything in. Now I will have to take a bunch back out and start over. Oh well, better safe than sorry. I really need to do some serious cutting while I'm at it. And that means potting, which means I need more room, which means I need a bigger greenhouse, which means that DH will be looking for the DG 2x4 to use on me!! I really need a Roundup somewhere near me, as in right now, to unload a bunch of plants.

weezin - want some? Actually, I love my greenhouse just the size it is. I just need to downscale my collection. I have done better this year - not many new plants, except things that get planted outside and stay there. The big hangup is pruning without keeping the cuttings. I just *hate* to throw those little things away. I can hear them crying - please, save me! I have pruned three plants this week, and now have 7 new pots to keep up with. Help me, please, how do I make myself throw anything out????
before the jungle takes over! I keep looking at all the clutter and thinking, now who can I give some of these to? I suspect some friends are going to get plants for Christmas!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Yes, this saving cuttings and seeds and plants is a real compulsion! We were just discussing that on the next Seed Snatchin' thread: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/556431/

McGregor, IA(Zone 4b)

If anyone is interested in transplanting new england asters from the wild this is the time to do it - after they bloom just dig up a small piece of the outside root and plant it in your garden. Just pull it off.

My easy seed snatching kit is just a bag of brown paper lunch sacks and a box of regular envelopes and a sharpie. And a few ziplocks for any stray cuttings that might need to be kept moist. (napkins and water are available everywhere)
Sharon

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Good idea, Sharon... keepin' it simple!

Rockford, IL(Zone 5a)

I defintely like "Propagation Control Manager"
LOL

Linda :)

Tyler, TX

Are we still seed snatchin"? I snatched some seed pods from a Putt Putt Golf place today. In broad daylight! I didn't know what they were but after searching the plant files I discovered that they are moonflower.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Ahhh, Shirley... pillaging at the Put Put!
