I bought the hardware cloth and made some 'cages' but I think the lily shoots will have a hard time growing through the wires...so I may have to 'fine tune' my wire cages or dig them up. I should have just lined the holes with the chicken wire...oh, well...
Really, Really Huge Bulbs!
I made open ended cylinders of the hardware cloth 12" tall dug holes about 10" deep and used sharp gravel for the first 2"of fill, then dirt/bulbs and then mulched the top with 2" gravel....the lilies came up through the gravel no problem and no losses to critters! (my first tries were 1 ft square and had mesh bottoms too but that was too much work for me!)
esw--well that sounds like it would do it! A huge amount of work, though, but worth it if it works! t.
I'm just covering mine with 4 inches of wood mulch & lots of chopped leaves from the lawn. I hope the thick mat will prevent the orientals from emerging too early & getting killed by frost again.
I got the Red Hot and Touching orienpets too. Should established lilies get fertilized now like the tulips and daffoldils? What about the day lilies?
oh i forgot to add-arent this HUGE!!!!!!!!!
the small one was 1.00 and the white ones were 5.00ec and the big one was 20.00
im really happy with my order!
Nice bulbs! I was wondering when we were going to see pictures. :)
Is anyone going to answer my fertilizer question? Should I fertilize my established already in the ground in the fall?
I don't think I'm the best one to offer advice about lily care ~
I've only given lilies Osmocote in the Spring.
I think spring would be the best. Just before the shoots emerge so you don't burn foliage and then carefully as the buds are increasing in size just before blooming. Well, that's how I do it when I fertilize.
