Winter Sowing forum?

North Augusta, SC(Zone 8a)

Would anyone else be interested in a winter sowing forum?
Alice

The woman who originally authored the article on "Winter Sowing" practically claims rights to the very name "Winter Sowing".

We'd need a different name for the forum, if it was created.

Which is interesting as she lifted it out of at least two published books (grumble grumble grumble grumble).

How about Autumn sowing?

How about something like...

Solstice Seed Sowing

or

Winter Seed Starting

Gamleby, Sweden(Zone 7a)

Winter gardening
Winter gardening for summer
Pre planting forum
I am up for it, because thats what I must do, due to short growseaseon

First let's find out if there's interest.

I personally don't think the propagation forum is overloaded enough to create a new forum but if I'm wrong and a new one created, may I suggest a general sowing forum rather than a particular season? A lot of people start seeds in Spring and, for some of us, 'Winter' Sowing as such isn't actually a necessariy or indeed viable in some cases. Some of us sow all year round ..... ;)

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Good point - if the propagation forum does seem to become lopsided with lots of threads on a particular method, that would probably be the time to consider branching out with a separate forum ;o)

Gamleby, Sweden(Zone 7a)

Can you maybe change it/add that it also inqlueds the winter problem some of us have. because as I got it, that the forum is just about the propagation in itself. Winter sowing is so much more. its light warmt etc etc. as it is now one plaster questions all over the place. Many of my questions dont fit the greenhouse eighter, because I dont have one :0)

Tayson, have you been in the Cool Climate Gardening forum yet? http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/coolclimates/ or the European forum?

Propogation is a more general forum for everyone with a propagation question, including winter sowing, perhaps the Cool Climates or indeed the European forum will target the people who are most likely to share your situation.

Gamleby, Sweden(Zone 7a)

no. sorry missed that lol. thanks for the link

I would definitely be interested!! I had asked this question in another thread and was directed here. Terry, I love the name Soltice Seed Starting

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I think it's a great idea, whatever you call it, maybe not a whole forum, maybe shared with something else, I've only sowed seeds at all a few times in my life (sweet peas and nastursiums, once morning glories), only one of which grew anything. But since finding DG, I am encouraged and bought even more seeds than usual. (!) Now that I've heard you can 'winter sow' I am even more excited! "Propagation" is a forum I would NEVER dare go to; it sounds like it's about cuttings and root divisions and such. Maybe a 'seed starting' forum for black thumbs like me to ask all their dumb questions.

Sowing Circle??? I just couldn't resist!

I would be interested. Maybe it could be a seed starting forum. Seems more people would go to that rather than the propagation forum. That does sound like it would be for cuttings and such. Maybe you should link this on the seeds trading forum so we get more input.

On the first page of the Propagation forum alone there are 7 out of 20 current threads about seed starting so it's definitely used for seed sowing discussions by others. I still say its not an over used forum and seed starting comes under the term Propagation. The last thread on the first page of the forum was replied to on 25th of October, it gets traffic but it's not a very active forum.

I just don't see the point of adding more forums on topics that are already adequately covered and established, nor for a specific type of seed sowing when there isn't a general seed sowing forum anyway since all other seed sowing discussion would still come under Propagation (and that's not implying I would support a general seed sowing forum either).

I agree - if the Propagation forum becomes lopsided with one particular technique (grafting, stratification, etc.) then it would behoove us to create a separate forum for that topic. But there's certainly no danger of that, at least not currently.

What if we tweaked the name of the forum a bit - "Seed Starting & Plant Propagation" - would that make it more inviting/less formidable than the current (concise) "Propagation" title?

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Yes Terry I think that it would.

Sounds great - Thanks

Seed Starting & Plant Propagation.........sounds more inviting for us newbies, both regarding growing seeds and DG-newbies.

I would also like to see a winter seed starting forum.

There are several great threads about winter seed sowing in the "Upper Midwest Forum"

I would also be very interested in a winter sowing forum. I may be wrong, but I don't believe there would be problem with using the same name. From what I understand, the woman who authored it considers it a seed starting process that she discovered by accident and would have no problem sharing the name.

Just my thoughts. For now, I consider the Propagation to be the most relevant to winter sowing and I'll post there for any help I need or advice I can give (solicited or not). ;)

As I had said previously - I too would like to have one spot for all these threads. There are a whole bunch in the Upper MidWest Gardening - unless you know where to look or get lucky - you can miss alot.

Midland, TX(Zone 7b)

I am still hoping for a forum for winter sowing. I almost hate putting all my questions about winter sowing in the propagation forum. It's like they would be in the wrong place.

Even with the current amount of threads regarding the winter sowing, it's pretty much still only a handful and they will disappear in a short while to resurface or the topics to be discussed with additional findings this time next year. It's also fairly exclusive to climates where the particular method many of you call winter sowing works best.

Merryma, the lady who described her wintersowing method that many of you use has already stated some time back that she'd be unhappy about DG using the term Winter Sowing. Whether she can legally lay claim to the term is another matter but it could upset the apple cart.

It's been a while since Trudi (her username here is Poojer) spoke up against using her information within DG: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/125843/

Perhaps she's had a change of heart since that was written (it's been more than four years ago now) - but at that time she had some very strong feelings on the use of certain terminology and information by others outside of GardenWeb (with whom she had some type of exclusive agreement to allow her information to be published?) Which is why this otherwise good suggestion usually elicits some gentle demurring by the admins and others who remember the brouhaha.

Personally, I live in an area where winter sowing works - and I've used the technique successfully for many different types of seeds (which reminds me I really need to get busy setting out some seeds now. However, the weather forecast is calling for another week of unseasonably high temperatures here - argh!)

And I'd like to see more discussion of the various techniques and tips that work, and those that don't. So I'll be keeping an eye on the Propagation forum - for my own personal edification, and to gauge the long-term level of interest in the winter sowing questions and discussions ;o)

Thanks Terry

I think it would be great. I'm really liking this site much better than GW. If she wants to stay there, good for her, but it's getting very frustrating over there. I think she must have some sort of agreement - she seems very willing to defend their actions over there, so it wouldn't surprise me. How about Winter Seed Starting to separate it from other forms of propagation, i.e. cuttings, layering, etc.

Southwest, WI(Zone 4b)

I read her post from 2001, and it's interesting because GW is now owned by another company and changed their terms of use (as of Jan.24) to read as if they have non-exclusive rights to anything that is posted on their site, so maybe she'll change her mind.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

she seemed adamant about it - I think there's more to it, maybe financial, but that's besides the point. She said "I am sorry, but links on the DG database are out, the primer is out, and posting the essay is out too" - which would make me believe that just having a forum that we can talk about 'Winter Seed Planting' is not in conflict of anything. That's just my opinion. It would be easier though since I have found references to the topic in several locations.

I understand DG's concern about possible retribution so I'll accept what ever their decision is.

Southwest, WI(Zone 4b)

absolutely

'Winter Seed Planting' sounds good to me.

I'll create it!

The forum is created.
