I'M THANKFUL THAT I'M OLD BECAUSE............

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Me, too!

"You're as old as you feel"-- balderdash. One day I feel like a kid and the next day I feel so old I should be mummified. There are aches and pains that most of us have in common, but mostly there are the hours we can remember how great some of the old days were and how much better some of the recent days have been. How great it is to climb into a warm bed and know that there will be another day to look forward to in the morning. There are friends and families in most cases, food on the table and a home to enjoy it in. There is the ability to go shopping and know there will be food in the markets and a safe journey there and back, even though the traffic stinks at times. But I guess mostly I enjoy being old because I'm no longer beholding to an employer who controls my life and that of my family in his hands by virtue of his paycheck. While pretentious homes, fancy cars and luxury vacations are out of the question (who needs them anyway?) there is enough to get by on, and perhaps help someone in greater need. That's what growing old, and crotchety and opinionated and egocentric and fussy and laid-back at times means to me. Hope I didn't offend anyone.

I agree with your entire message. The ability to help others is a gift from God, not a job to me and you seem to agree.

I'm not sure how old I'd appear in a mirror if I couldn't give to others and I don't want to know.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

You didn't offend me one bit. I agree with you completely. In a nutshell, you seem to be saying "count your blessings".

I do, everyday. God has been very good to me. I try to return the favor.

Balvenie, I think I really like the person you have decided to be.

Ahhh, Carat, he's a Treasure!

BTW, how old is old?

Fayetteville, NC(Zone 8a)

If you have to ask, Dinu, you aren't old enough.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

tee-hee, Diane! That's pretty good!!

Dinu, how old are you? We who are responding to this are pretty mostly grandparent-age. But you can certainly respond even if you are younger. Just so long as you have something to be thankful for.

I'd like to hear about it.

Vegas,NV Filbert, SC(Zone 7b)

Well as far as my children are concerned I am nowhere near old enough to be a grandma and please don't tell them you think I am.

LOL

And as I stated before I am just thankful I am capable of getting out of bed and walking to the patio to see the beautiful sunrise while I drink my coffee and eat my breakfast.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

We could each list our age if you want. But reponse would have to voluntary. I'm 58.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

65, next week.

Vegas,NV Filbert, SC(Zone 7b)

41 here, yes a young GOBette

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

My mother always said, "A woman who will tell you her age will tell anything".

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

What do you want to know???

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

:-)) You're too funny!

I've just read this from beginning to end, and the thing that caught my attention was ... it was started on my 31st anniversary. Soooo, I'm thankful that God gave me such a wonderful helpmate ... that we have beaten today's odds ... that we are close and love each other and are blessed beyond measure. Everything else in life is just "fluff". As long as I have God and my DH ... I'm okay. Blessings to all ... Elaine

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Amen, Elaine! I am SO HAPPY to meet you!

Hi nap ... so nice to meet you, too!

For those of you who might not know ... Happy1 who started this thread is one of the victims of the Wilma hurricane. She is currently on a cruise and has no idea what kind of shape her home will be in when she returns. I'd like to ask that we all remember her in our prayers.

I am mostly a lurker as by the time I can get to the end of a line of responses, I have forgotten what I was going to say. However, I am glad to be older (not OLD please) because I am able to stretch some of my funds with senior discounts. Also, if I do something outrageous (once in a while) I am forgiven because I'm a senior. I don't feel old most of the time but there are times I feel I'm the same age as this great country. By the way, I am 67, or at least that's what the calender says. LOL

These last few responses have cracked me up. You guys are SO funny.

I am 67 and can't believe it. No one in my family lived past 65 except one grandmother. I am so thankful for each day the Lord gives me and His love for me and mine, and for each of my children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. There are so many things that we "older citizens" can remember that young people just crinkle up their noses at, and I am thankful for that, too.

How old would you be, if you didn't know how old you were? ;~)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I think I did that one podster. :-))

I'm thankful I'm old because my Mother and I are friends now ... and I wouldn't have wanted to miss that. I wrote her a little poem on Mother's Day one time, and it started out like this ...
Isn't it amazing
How smart a Mom can be
It doesn't take many years
Before you start to see
That a Mom is made of wisdom
Far beyond her years
For she can heal your heart aches
And help to calm your fears.

Okay, I won't bore you with the rest ... but I'm glad I got to know my Mother as an adult. Y'all know what I mean. Those teen years are hard! ... Elaine

Because I don't have to highlight my hair anymore. The gray throws out more highlights then I want. Hehe

I'M THANKFUL THAT I'M OLD BECAUSE....................
............it beats the alternative............

Ric (who would rather be 30........so I keep acting that way.......)

LOL Amen! ;)

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Sooner or later we all have to act our age but I'm sure not ready for that yet! People younger than I am are sitting around waiting to die because they think they are old.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

You are so right Mary! I hate when they try to drag me down to their level by saying what I can and cannot do. They're not here when my DH and I are out there working 9 and 10 hours a day, happily and without pains.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

My Mother is 85 and blind, Father 86 and some kind of neurological problem best discribed as non-progressive Parkinson's.
They are still in the home they bought new 50 years ago.
They do have a care giver who visits 3 times a week and cleans.
But otherwise do everything themselves, including some gardening, are avid....sports fans, readers, etc.
Two years ago they were still taking college courses at the Rec Center.
My Grandma was the same way.
She passed at 88, her younger sister at 98.

To me that's how 'older' people act their age. lol

I'm 52 so in early middle age as my Family counts it.

Ask me 30 years from now how late middle age is going ;-)

When someone calls you on your age, just tell them "youth" is a gift of nature, "age" is a work of art, and thank you for the compliment.
I've earned every grey hair and no dye job for me. What you see is what you get.

I'm thankful for each day that I can enjoy the sun rise in the east and set in the west, and I make the most of each day.

Annie

I'm thankful I'm finally old enough to be able to say ... "I really don't want to do that!" LOL :)

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

My entire life was loaded with stress. Paying the mortgage, bills, illness, divorce, success, defeat, loss of loved ones and on and on. Now I don't know stress for we have parted ways. I do what I want when I want, no more bills, no more worries about anything except my tomato garden that rewards me greatly for my caring for them. Growing old ??? If this is growing old -- I LOVE IT !!!
