Dallas Plant Swap - In Pics!
Like KK said, I have fun with my photofiltre software... I like cropping and enhancing them when I edit!
Yes, Sylvia, that is my yard, actually it is part of the waterfall and stream before it drops into the pond... We will leave it, like we will leave everything else... we are just caretakers on earth, right? New house, new canvas, new challenges.... we are ok with it! We'll just be doing it on a smaller scale next time!
mel
Yep they are here - love the cornflower, stricking color.
I have some more Cats Wiskers for you to (I took the last four and now have to find a place form them . . .. they have to come inside right?
You know those friskars cut great... ummmm might have to get a few cuttings before I meet you Sat to send them back up that way!
Mitch
Sylvia, that's what I thought the Cornflowers were. Yay! They are beautiful! Thank you so much.
I had a great time yesterday meeting everyone, it was well worth the trip!! My only complaint is that somehow everyone's cameras make me look fat or something (lol)! You all need to take those to a shop! (Oh my, I really need to print those out and put them on my fridge, I've gained so much weight!!)
As everyone has already said, Frank was a god-send to help us with all the trips to the cars - first, unloading them, then loading them back up. There were a number of other angels, as well, just more evidence of what a special group of gardeners you all are!
It's so fun to read everyone's posts when you have actually met that person. I can't remember, I think it was Sheila who pointed out that the Ft Worth Botanical Gardens isn't represented on the Public Gardens forum. We think we need a Dave's Garden day (when it's really cool) to just wander around, chat, eat and take pictures for the forum. Maybe early next Spring? In the meantime, maybe we can get together over lunch sometime. Maybe you guys can come to see me, or we could meet halfway, or... (See, I can't wait to come spend more time with everyone!)
I'm looking forward to finding just the right spot for everything (I'll need some help to ID some of it, lol) and getting it all settled in beds or pots.
Sylvia, I'm so glad you found the Fiskars, none of us knew who they belonged to when Mitch was asking. Have you started any cuttings yet? :-)
On my way home last night I was thinking of all the wonderful plants everyone was sharing with each other, and what it was like when I went to my first RoundUp, where we also did some trading (another first for me). I think I'm getting the hang of it now: http://davesgarden.com/journal/d/t/maggiemoo/1503/ .
Thanks so much to Josephine and Mitch for getting this all coordinated!
Ohhhhh Mary.....that sum it up so beautifully...thanks for sharing your thoughts! It means more after having experienced my first plant swap and feeling overwhelmed when I got home last night unloaded and felt so humbled by the generosity of the group. Then the panic set in as to where I was going to plant everything... and knowing that I won't have sucess with all of them. :-( But I have a chance to , and it was given to me in friendship....as you said "no strings attached". :o)
Sheila
Edited for a note to Mel:
I knew my hair was wind blown that day, but a close up...now that wasn't in my plan! LOL! Thanks for sharing your pictures though, I sure wish I had remembered to bring my camera. Oh, I need to ask you something....you have Dmail.

It was so nice to meet you Mary! I was just thinking today how fun you would be to have closer to us! But we can't steal you from your Houston friends, so we'll all just have to hang out again. Did you happen to see that wildflower again? You'll have to let me know if you ever find what it was.
Your diary is wonderful! You are lucky to be able to express yourself so well. Another reason I think that I hesitate sometimes is that I feel like I'm being greedy! But at the few swaps I've been to, I'm finding that most everyone comes with the same spirit, just wanting to be together and share. Most don't want to take anything home, they brought it all and WANT to give it away. Like when Anh was leaving he carried his tray around saying it was all marked down. lol So, for that price I took a rose cutting, which is not normally what I grow. Now if it survives I'll always remember where I got it.
Has anyone noticed how we are all referring to each other now by our names, rather than ID's? :)
PAIGE, who forgets to sign hers!
Mary worded perfect. Love the way you wrote abuot the free plants too - We all should get together just to sit back and chat maybe March ... ummm
Mitch
Just read through all this and have to say I am so sorry I couldn't make it. We still have our Rita evacuees, and even though they are teenagers I don't feel comfortable just yet leaving them on their own too long. Looks like you had a great time, and I am determined to be able to participate next time.
Oh Sharon, I am so sorry you couldn't make it, but bless your heart, you are doing something wonderful for others and that says a lot about you.
I still have extra plants to give away if you want any.
Please let me know.
Josephine.
Josephine,
I would love some plants. Will poke around and see what I might have to trade. Also, the greenhouse is about halfway finished :-)
Sharon
Sharon, a greenhouse! wow! that is wonderful, I must tell you that you don;t have to have anything to trade, I will be very happy to give you whichever plants you want.
Let me know when and how, we normally have Sundays at home so that would be good,or you let me know what is good for you.
Josephine.
Josephine,
you have d-mail.
Sharon
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/909/index.html - Flowering Quince.. you might want a big area for this one.... it looks great but needs lots of room.
The Jewels of Opar is invassive, it will die out with the first frost but it will come back from the seeds everywhere and then some. Unless you want to weed out all the time you might want to let this one go.
Lol ...Mitch I got just the place for the quince! ....on the outside of the fence...;)
Now...just how am I going to let a (Jewel of Opar) plant go? ...this calls for a BIG pot! lol
Sylvia
Sylvia, I think you got the Flowering Quince from Thuy and Anh. I remember debating whether I wanted it or not. They are very pretty but I don't have room for bushes...too many plants in the way. lol
They are a great bush - it will look great. Just keep those mowers away from it!
Is anyones flowering quince blooming? I planted mine in July and it has about a dozen blooms. This year my plants seem to be confused: I've had iris blooming on and off this summer and late August I discovered an Indian Paintbrush in bloom. Amen for the little surprises in life!
Carolyn
Carolyn, what neat surprises you have had, all of us should be that lucky.
Josephine.
Paige you are so right...now i remember...I did get from Thuey and Ahn! Did anyone try to get them to join the DG? They will be awsome contributers.
Carolyn ...just as I am getting ready to downsize my Cannas, they are blooming like crazy...I wonder what up with that?
...no worry Mitch, remember all those bricks in the trunk of my car? they are there for a reason. lol
Sylvia
all those bricks in the trunk of my car? they are there for a reason.
LOL!
It seems like everything has been wierd this year, the growing and blooming patterns/cycles have been all over the place.
Maggie maybe I dont know what your thinking is about my usage of the bricks ...but I was going to use them to place around the planted Quince... not to throw at the mowers. LMBO!
Sylvia
I use bricks around everything for my plants... yep the crazy mower around here from time to time cuts grass when it gets a little to dark and well it just helps...
LOL!! Sylvia, i did think you were going to throw the bricks at the mowers!! (laughing so hard I'm crying!
LOL ...Maggie ...now you got me really laughing ...imaging such a maniacal act.... dont mess with my plants! LOL
Sylvia
Oh, dear. I wish I had been able to join you all. The change of dates just messed everything up. You all look wonderful in the pictures. Hopefully, we can have a spring swap in Arlington at Veterans Park. It is just such a good centrally located place. There is a swap in Lewisville next Saturday.
....next Swap I will be sure to buy me a little pully or a little red wagon. :) Posie spring sound good....will give me some time to proprogate some things. lol
Sylvia
Posie where is the plant swap in Lewisville???
I have not heard about it . . . umm not that I have anything worth bringing at the moment but it would be fun to meet more Daves members. Mitch
Here is info about Lewisville swap.
Fall Plant Swap, Saturday, October 15, 2005, 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Potluck and door prizes at the wonderful Lewisville Independent School District Outdoor Learning Area (LISDOLA), Business 121 & Fish Hatchery Road. Bring your children as there are some great native trails! There's also a wonderful antique rose garden to explore!
When going north on Business 121 when you get to the stop light with the street sign that reads Holford Prairie Road turn left (there is no street sign saying Fish Hatchery Road); the road is a little dirt road. Fish Hatchery Road is to the left, Holford Prairie Road is to the right. I don't know if you are going south of Business 121, if the same holds true as far as street signs.
TARogers, you were there one time before. I remember because I received a red agastache from you.
Y'all come. It will be great fun.
I will be going to Lewisville that morning to see my son who just returned from Katrina with the Ok national guard. Grand daughter has a ball game at 8:30 so will be a little late getting there. Need to get ahold of Anh to bring him some gold fish. Wonder if he will bel there?
He was there for the spring swap.
Look forward to seeing you again.
Sedrick, you'll love the beautiful flowers from the talinum.....I'm bringing mine back inside for the winter (have it in pots set down into the garden and rooted cuttings in the ground). It's a great plant! And, if it's invasive, YEAH! I like those invasive guys........less planting for me in the spring.......only ones I hate are the weeds......lol
Q - at the swap I piced up a Dantura from someone... I was thinking the big white and it had a bud... now it is getting open nothing white but deep purple... any idea what one it is??? Mitch
