NEED ANIMAL TRANSPORT HELP IN CALIFORNIA

Memphis, TN(Zone 7b)

Hi all - we have a "situation" in California that we need help with. Please review the link. Basically we need to set up or organize a transportation relay in California to get an orphaned cat from one place to another. If you can help - please post on the thread in the Pets forum and contact the people involved via D-mail....

Sad story and we have the chance to make a happy ending!

Thanks in advance for your help - I know someone will come through!

I would be willing to pick up the cat and drive it up to say Santa Barbara.

George = thanks so much for your offer to help. I believe Debbie(dkorte) will be in touch with you soon.

Calif_Sue (on the other thread) said she'd be willing to transport. Since she's in San Jose and I'm in San Pablo, she could drive the cat to me and I would be willing to take it to Sebastopol.

OK - here's a summary of the deal as I see it right now.

1. George will pick up the cat and take it as far as Santa Barbara.

2. ________________ will meet George and drive the cat from Santa Barbara to ______________.

3. ________________ will pick him up and drive him from _______________ to ______________.

4. Calif_Sue will drive him from San Jose to Berkeley or thereabouts.
Pekasky will drive him from Berkeley to Zuzu in Sebastopol.

So the question is: How do we find people who live in the Santa Barbara to San Jose route (probably Hwy 101) who are willing to drive him over that part of the route? Would it be helpful to ask ADM for some assistance in locating possible drivers? Any other suggestions?

How about alternatives. There are horse transports that move horses between L.A. and the bay area. A cat carrier would not take up any room amongst their tack. Or there are companies like TBS who courier documents back and forth. They have overnight service. I wonder if they run a truck back and forth. A driver who enjoys pets might be persuaded to take a cat carrier in the cab.

You got our attention by the headline you used, how about the media? A segment producer for a local morning show would kill for a let's-pitch-in-and-help-make-it-a-feel-good-story.

"I belong to this fabulous gardening website called davesgarden.com, and between a few of the members JUST in CA, we have found this poor murder witness a new home. See how strangers put their heads together?"

Pitch it, the worst they can say is no thanks.

I don't know about the media. I, for one, don't really want any publicity. There was a writeup about me and my cats in an Oakland paper years ago, and people started dumping whole boxloads of cats on my property.

Valinda, CA(Zone 10a)

More like someone who knows someone who drives back and forth.

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

Oops Zuzu, didn't consider that. Ok, scratch that idea.

What about air? Private pilot or plane on a regular run? Air Freight? Greyhound?

There has got to be a way to relay this cat!

Hey wait, I've got an idea. Let me email a friend and I'll get back to you.

Kitties usually have to be heavily drugged to travel by air or bus, and it sounds as though this kitty might have been through enough trauma already. There is the chance, after all, that he saw his owner being murdered.

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

Shoot, she was online, but that idea was a no-go too. Her dh is an Army recruiter, and I wondered if we could make a chain that way, but that would be non-authorized travel and they could get in trouble.

What about a post in the Calf Gardening forum? Maybe someone traveling to a RU?

I understand, Zuzu. I went a couple of rounds with the media myself, and I didn't like how I was portrayed in either case. But maybe we can use THEM when they think they're using US, and keep your location out of it. Whaddaya think?

I also really like George's idea. I'm going to put my thinking cap on. I might know someone who's going to Southern Calif. Various friends drive back and forth periodically. I just have to check around.

mornin_gayle's idea re RUs would work too, but I think the only RU left this year in California is north of me in about 10 days. But it wouldn't hurt to post to the California Gardening forum and ask there if anyone's traveling back and forth. I like it!!

Called a friend who does cat fostering for a rescue organization. She's going to email them in the morning and ask if they know of anyone willing to pick up the cat from George and bring it up here. I'll keep you posted.

i think until Dkorte comes back, everything is on hold.

Phoenix, MD(Zone 7a)

yes what happened to dkorte?

Merrimac, WI(Zone 4b)

How about checking the membership list and dmailing someone in Santa Barbara and San Jose to see if they know anyone who can help?

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

We have someone in San Jose who's willing to bring the cat to me. I looked at our membership list (subscribers only though) and couldn't really find anyone on Hwy 101 between Santa Barbara and San Jose except for stellapathic, and she's quite a ways west of 101 and north of Santa Barbara.
