What is your favorite Gardening Magazine?

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

I don't really subscribe to any particular magazine, except a few travel ones. Wondering what the favorites are with regard to garden magazines, not seed catalogs nor books, just magazines. Thanks.

Just as with mailorder gardening sources, we have a slew of magazines in the Watchdog, and they all love good feedback (hint, hint ;o)

Here's the current list of gardening magazines we've found, ranked according to their GWD rating: http://davesgarden.com/gwd/advanced.php?state=&country=&category=103&search_text=&submit=Search&sorter=rating

You can always re-sort this list alphabetically by clicking on the "Company" column heading. I hope everyone will take a moment to find their faves and let others know why you like the magazine. If you find we've overlooked a periodical, please let us know or feel free to add it yourself (buttons/links are at the top and bottom of the GWD main page.)

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

The only one I get is Horticulture and I do like it a lot. My mom gets Garden Gate and she thinks it's better.

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

Thornton, IL

I LOVE Garden Gate and have just subscribed to Horticulture, so I'll have a comparison.
Type in Garden Gate Magazine for web site, subscription info.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Garden Gate is tops with our readers, too - the link I gave above will take you to their entry, with an email and website link, ditto for all the other gardening mags. (Personally I like Southern Living, but Heirloom Gardener and Garden Gate rank among my favorites, too. (With apologies to Will Rogers, my husband would tell you I've never met a garden magazine I didn't like, lol.)

By now, you may be groaning at my exhortations, but please remember - threads like this are fun, but they eventually fade away, replaced by other threads. The Watchdog is a more permanent place to "vote" for your favorites (and leave some constructive feedback for vendors who need to do better.) For those who read the reviews, but don't bother to post their own comments....what YOU know helps others, just as the comments you read have helped you choose who to buy from and which companies to steer clear of.

I have a real soft spot for the magazines because they're so often-overlooked: we have 76 magazines listed - but fewer than half have any rating, and only 90 or so comments have been posted, all-told.

The Watchdog is only as good (and up-to-date and thorough) as we all make it, and I hope everyone reading and posting to this thread will also mosey on over and leave a thumbs up or down for one (or more) magazines.

Thanks everyone, the input is very helpful and will definitely check them all out.

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

I subscribed to Horticulture and Garden Gate magazines and enjoyed them both. I kept them since they were too pretty to throw away and recently gave them away to a Freecycle member. They both have good information and the Garden Gate comes with an additional cover so it isn't messed up in the mail or you can leave it on to preserve its good looks. LOL

English Garden is by far my favorite. The pictures are just fabulous and I do find flowers in gardens there that I have (or had) in my garden. Kind of exciting! Doris

Terry,
Where did you do the search for magazines? Your hyperlink works great, but when I went to "Garden Watchdog" I couldn't find a place to do that search, and some of the other categories looked interesting too.

1. Go to the main Garden Watchdog page by clicking on the tab or here: http://davesgarden.com/gwd/

2. Scroll down past the "Top 30" and newly-posted comments until you find the "Browse by Category" pulldown list (see picture below).

3. You can select any category (there are dozens of them) and see all the companies listed under that category.

4. Sort the results by clicking on the title "Rating" in the left-hand column.

(Alternatively, once you find a company, you can click on any of the categories displayed in its entry to see other vendors selling similar items.)

Just got two years subscription for Garden Gate. Sounds great and I'll add my two cents to the WatchDog too, once I have something to say. I've been pondering which one to get and this thread clinched it. I had no idea magazines were listed in the WatchDog, I'd only ever used it for plant dealers. Learn something every day.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

My FAVORITE Garden Magazine is Dave's Garden. And it is the only one I have chosen to keep a subscription to.

It's not full of ads

It's full of fun garden stories, life stories, great advice for all kinds of things, photos, and friendship. And if you like to garden - you need to be a part of this great group.

Need I say more?

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

I just subscribed to Garden Gate yesterday, and can't wait to see it. Didn't check the box for the free sample, just wasn't thinking again LOL! Should have the first one in a few weeks.

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

I gave the Garden Gate subscription as a gift two years in a row to my neighbor. She was a beggining gardener. She has since moved to another home, but I am sure it has helped her to become a better gardener. She used to give me nightmares the way she would grow her flowers. Once I saw her bring a whole flat of flowers home and try to plant them in the hottest part of the day. The worst part was when she took them all out of their pots and laid them on the concrete in front of the bed all at one time. Yikes! I couldn't stand to think what the dried roots would do, so hurried over there and helped her plant them. LOL
It is a great gift to give at Christmas when you want something nice. It does take quite a while for the subscription to start, so either tell them it is on the way or order two months in advance and tell them if it comes early it is their Christmas present.

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Sounds like in Garden Gate, I chose the perfect one for me. They did send a sample and I found several good garden tips in it. I was especially interested in the fact that putting a bunch of lavender and one daylily leaf in a birdbath will keep algae from starting. Will surely remember and give that a try next season.

Fayetteville, NC(Zone 8a)

I have subscribed to Birds and Blooms for years and can't wait for the next issue. Just now started my Garden Gate subscription and am giving one to my daughter for Christmas. Guess I'm right in there with the rest of you. We all know a good thing when we see it.

Eureka, CA

I have subscribed to Garden Gate for nearly 7 years!! Definitely my favorite. I've shared gift subscriptions over the years too.
