very nice pictures!

Really nice pictures, Zem! Love the even coloration in that last mg!

Gail - The I.carnea resembles the Ipomoea macrorhiza
http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/8741/
in that picture...did you take your picture very early(?) or very late...what is the bloom opening and closing time(s) where you are...

Emma - Yeah, those two purps look very similar...maybe the Frenchies imported their seed from the good ole' US of A(!?)...

I've been gathering reports of copious nectar flowing from the seedpods of I.setosa and from the different Moonvines...anybody notice alot of liquid on their vines that seems to be flowing from the seedpods(?!)...the ants, bees and other insects will feed off of this nectar during the day when it is flowing alot...it's also easier to notice if the vines are growing on an overhead arbor or where it is easy to notice the nectar from the seedpods flowing...and where the rain doesn't always get to wash it away...it can seem like 'rain drops' dripping from off of the seedpods...

Ron,
Interesting info about the MoonFlower Vines.
I'll check on mine.
I do, however, see wasps on my pods as they are forming 'constantly', and have always wondered 'why'!

Willoughby, OH(Zone 5a)

Ron,the photo was taken in the evening after a light rain. Buds opened in the early morning and stay open late into the night,if weather is cool and somewhat overcast. Indeed the flower does resemble I.macrorhiza ,but if you look closely, you will see the leaves in my pic. are not serrated and are more elongated and glossy than those of I.macrorhiza.

I have 2 vines that managed to survive out my pack of Aogakiyama 'Blue Snowcapped Mountain'

From the name, I assume it's this one:

So who is this??

Thumbnail by Moby
Willoughby, OH(Zone 5a)

Moby, your blue one looks like I. tricolor "Heavenly Blue".The second pic looks remarkably similar to my" Heian Akathuki".

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

That just what I thought about the blue ~ so I didn't bother to post the pic when it bloomed a few days ago. Plus that blue didn't look like something I would have bought in a JMG. But it looks different from the Heavenly Blue that I usually grow that has smooth stems. This is hairy.

I was waiting for the second vine to bloom (assuming that was the correct one) and saw that it was a very different color. Now that I've checked on the name.... I'm thoroughly confused.

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Gail - I could see that the leaves in the 1st photo you posted were non-serated elongated cordate and consistent with the Ipomoea carnea...I was just commenting on the similarity of the blooms...

Moby - photos of a sideview of the flower clearly showing the sepals will determine the species of the flower in question...I would tend to think that it may be an Ipomoea early call if the sepals show it to be an Ipomoea nil...

Emma - the nectar is being produced by the extra-floral nectaries and one of the purposes of these extra-floral nectaries is to attract insects that will protect the plant from herbivores...the wasps will enjoy the nectar and may protect the plant from other insects that would eat the blooms...wasps are carnivorous as young, but are mostly vegetarian as adults...

Here is a side view to go with the above discussed bloom. Thanks for your input ~

Gourd,

That is the coolest MG wow thanks for the picture! Does it make a lot of seeds? Is it perennial? What is the botanical name?

Joseph

Mesilla Park, NM

Hi Joseph,
the package says:

Unusual orange flos. HA or TP vine
Nick seeds. Germ in 1-2 weeks, warm.

So, I think it just may be a Tropical perrenial here, not sure. Is that what TP means? I know that HA means Hardy Annual.

Edited to say: This is the first year I grow this. It is very healthy, and seems to do well with the seeds, minimal care, and is doing well in a pot. Don't know how many seeds it will produce yet, but there are more buds forming.

tender perennial

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

That orange one is very different. I love the color. Here is one of my Roman Candy's. It looks somewhat like your pink one Moby. This one is small, like a regular MG. The vine is still very small, so I brought it inside the house. May be to 37 here tonight.

Antoinette,
Very Pretty Orange MG.
How large are your blooms?

Can't wait to hear what Ron has to say about this one.

Emma

Ouch, Susan, 37?? I was grumbling at 49 last night Yikes winter is arriving too fast!! That pink MG is fantastic!

Emma, that one is about the size of a quarter maybe a little smaller. It was closed at 4:30 pm when I got back home today. The color is that of that orange clock vine..
