We picked up Barney last Friday. He's 8 weeks old and growing by the day. We almost have changed his name to Hoover because he is constantly searching for food.
I must say my dh does not wear socks with sandals. lol, he put them on when Barney started chewing on his feet.
Meet Barney
What a cutie! If I were one of Barney's people I'd probably find myself unable to keep from laughing when he did something he shouldn't and I was trying to discipline him. LOL Been there, done that, those big round eyes and that mystified "What did I do?" puppy face - I'm just a sucker for a sad furry face! --Ginny
What a doll-face! I'm afraid I'd be like ginnylynn when it came to discipline. I'm such a sucker for those "orphan eyes" that they turn on you when they want something or when they're being scolded.
Hoover is going to be a great deal of love and fun I think, and those curious intelligent eyes may cause you some work while he investigates the world.
~marilyn
he's so cute, and I bet so soft too with all that wavey hair. I've almost gone to socks too, but broke down and gave him an old slipper of mine instead.
I bet he's work his way deep into your hearts already LOL
Yes, cute puppy.
(Note, escaping momentarily to the Canadian Forum to escape Hurrita.)
Aw Liz, I just love him. What an adorable face.
When will he be starting his 'obedience lessons? LOL
Joan
Hiya Barney. Your a cute one, aren't ya. :)
He's a real cutie and I'm not generally a dog lover, but how could one resist that face?
Ann
He is adoreable, you won't be bored for sure with him around
Cindy
Liz
He is very cute!! I think he is part monkey cause I can see that look in his eye. You are now blessed with puppy kisses and I bet puppy breath. Barney looks like he will have lots of hair! I am going to watch for growing photo's and growing stories.
Thankyou for sharing your new baby.
Ann
Aw, is he ever cute Liz. He looks like a little teddy bear. I bet he's lots of fun to have around. Keep the pictures coming.
Sandy
OK I just have to ask : what is Barney's breed? Im not real good on ID'ing a lot of breeds from pups and am wondering if he is one of the new 'designer' breeds like a goldendoodle? Inquiring minds need to know!
carol
Thanks all, we are totally smitten with this little guy. We only had two nights of having to take him out of his crate in the night. Now he sleeps in there until 7am. He lets us know when he has to go out. What more could we ask for? Now if I could get him to stop chewing everything in sight.
Carol, I guess he's a mutt. He's a cross between a Soft Haired Wheaton and a Poodle.
Liz, that's great that he's sleeping through the night. He's so adorable. have you tried bitter apple spray to discourage chewing on things? Seems to do a pretty good job here.
I haven't yet but think I'll be getting some today. He has taken a special liking to the big EE leaves. Can you use the apple spray on plants?
I don't know Liz, it's about 20% rubbing alcohol so it might burn the leaves. Maybe try it on a plant that isn't worth too much to you. It's sure saved our table legs.
Thanks Liz: You mean he's 'All Canadian" - that is the current terminology for those mutts /heinz 57 as we used to call them when I was a kid! In the USA they are All American! LOL! At an agility trial last year we had a dog entered called "zimbabwe retriever" He was a cross between a Rhodesian ridgeback and lab retriever!
Re the chewing - when he is chewing on something that is not 'legal' distract him and give him something that is 'legal' for him to chew. And of course lots of prasie!
Seems to me I have a good article on teaching puppies not to chew - would you like it?
carol
We used to paint all wooden furniture legs with LA hot sauce.

Liz, congratulations on adding Barney to your family. What a sweety!
Liz, hi.........and others here...........I'm back from my vacation to the UK and Ireland. Congrats on your new addition!!! E
Hello everyone..I've been busy and have not been on Dave's for nearly two months! Bet no one even noticed!
Liz your dog is adorable and the new granchild-Tea(Brugcrazy) is so special and beautiful. I have 4 grandsons but alas no girls. This summer I had to baby sit-for two weeks I had all four boys(age7 to 10). I deserve a bloody medal! Fun but exhausting.
Cheers, to all,Lana.
Lana

Annabell52:
My friends have heard this story before but I must tell it again. My womderful grandkids and I are the only people I know to be kicked out of the local MacDonald's. They were playing ON the play stucture, not in it which was far too tame and safe. Climbing ON TOP was much more fun and dangerous too!!!!
I love them to bits but I must say, I have not gone back to that MacD's yet.
Cheers, Lana.
Is he not cute enough to die for! I have not hugged him yet, but I will soon, I hope. I think bitter apple is OK for your ears, Liz. It is just water, alcohol, and bitters. Cayenne could work too--but Barney might have a taste for tomales. Heaven forbid it should burn his little tiny mouth. I have used rubbing alcohol on scale without burning the leaves. Try a bit on a test leaf. Love him to bits.
Liz: I just assumed the socks and sandals was definitely NOT BD.
LOL, sunrize. Doesn't today's weather just suck big time??? Apparently Barney hasn't experienced a good old January rainy day yet. It was a learning experience for me this morning carrying a dog, a flashlight and an umbrella up to the street for his morning constitutional. He smells like a wet dog. I reek of wet dog.
I know as Clancy has not dried yet from his 7 am walk and now I have to brave it at noon. Was going to Park Royal and got as far as Parkgate. I was thinking of Barney and the rain, and Cooper and the rain. Yucch! Can't even get myself to the car with all the accoutrement yet.
He is beautiful, cuddly and kissable despite doggy breath. Looks like he should be a magazine cover dog - Peaton, Whoodle???
Whoodle. OK, don't flame me for being one of "those" dog people. lol
LOL Liz- a designer dog! What will they think of next?
I have a dog(gran-dog) who is a Border Collie with MAJOR attitude. Aren't we just nuts to gush over our pets so!
Solomon.
LOL, I haven't read the thread for a day or 2. A WHOODLE?? It sounds like so much fun. Yes the heavey rain was a bit of surprise for us here as ewll, someone of us four legged ones weren't quite ready to be outside but he adapted very quickly.
I bet Barney is so soft and loves to be cuddled.
Solomon, so nice to see you back, and roseelaine too!
Liz, any more pictures?
Here we go Liz. You poor old thing. How miz for you. Only bright side is that somebody else has to do dishes. Prob. you have a dish washer(mechanical - not two-legged) anyway.
First of all, with no shots yet, call your vet and take him in RIGHT AWAY. Do not put him down on the floor at vet office. Carry him. Also, it is best not to take him into any public places till he has had his shots.
You don't want him to catch anything.
When we had puppies, didn't even let people near them till they were a month old or so and NEVER let puppies leave us till they had had their first shots.
Remember that puppies are social beasts. They want/crave/need love and attention so of course they want to be as near to you as possible. Under foot is something you have to live with for awhile I'm afraid. We had to almost slide (!!) our feet around the kitchen to make sure we didn't step on someone. To puppies, feet are part of you. Therefore, get as near as possible. That is puppy mantra.
It is time for you to do some of your own training though. Poodles and wheatens are both clever dogs so Barney should pick up trainig quite easily.
Get a leash and start leash training him. On your own property. In the house will be fine. No playing when he is on the leash. This is business time. Make sure you have goodies for him right near to hand. In your pocket maybe. You want him to give you his full attention so no playing. 10 mins or so, twice a day, then 3 or 4 times a day. If he pulls, a quick jerk and command will eventually stop it. Call the person who will be taking your puppy class to find out what words she/he will be teaching, and use only those commands with Barney. That way, he won't be confused when you do start classes.
Sorry that I can't be more help.
Inand
That is so not funny Liz. I hope you heal quickly and don't suffer to much. My one cat does that feet thing to me and trips me now and then. Usually just in the kitchen though. Getting her tail or toes stepped on seems to wake her up for a brief period of time, but then she's not getting any smarter.
So sorry this happened to you.
Brenda
Liz I hope you are feeling OK and not in too much pan. I agree with Ginny, get the shots asap. the first shot gives about 40% immunity we were told, and even with that we were worried about puppy classes. We've had him under our feet, I've stepped on him twince now. LOL that was a typo but I think it fits!
Good luck with the training Liz, and I hope you heal quick.
Linda
Liz
What a steep curve for you !Yikes I'm not a big expert but my dog was from a vet/breeder and she would not let a dog out of her sight untill the shots were started and insisted I not let her meet another dog or play in any other dog's area untill shots were well on there way. Ginny is right on from my meger knowledge.
I will wish for the fast healing(get better) fairy to visit you.
Ann
Hi, all.
I haven't been to the Cdn Gardeners Forum in a while. Liz, that puppy is just to die for. As far as breed is concerned, don't sweat the small stuff. Mixed breeds are usually healthier, more intelligent and live longer than their pedigreed peers. We had a mixed breed Lhassa Hapso and who-knows-what-else. The purebred mother ran away one day and came back with a litter of those. Nounou was made of gold. She lived to the ripe old age of 16 1/2.
One day, Nounou and I were waiting our turn at the veterinary when I noticed an old lady sitting across the waiting room from us (obviously a cat person) with a smirk on her face. Eventually, she asked me: "What kind of dog is that?". I looked her in the eye and told her Nounou was a pedigreed miniature South African wolf hound, one of only 6 in Canada. She went for it.
Eventually, Nounou went to that great kennel in the sky. Missing her companionship, we replaced her quickly with a pure-bred Lhassa Hapso weighing in at over 7 pounds that ate a 3-piece living room set and chewed the legs of any piece of furniture it could get its little teeth on. It would chew electric cords until the circuit breakers tripped. We tried the tabasco sauce routine. We tried repellents of every make and kind available: fruitless. That darn dog actually developped a taste for it. When she was not busy chewing everything in sight, she piddled everywhere. We tried cuddling, punishing and obedience school, to no avail.
Before violence towards the dog or divorce threatened, we had to admit defeat. We had a brain-damaged dog on our hands. It had to be put to sleep. Even the vet, having been bitten repeatedly by her, agreed with us on that. The dog was not living with us. We lived with the dog and that's not a funny situation. We have been without a dog since because we know we'll never find another Nounou. Now, we pet other people's dogs and compliment them on how cute they are.
To be sure, yours is a cutie. May he bring you as many years of happiness as we enjoyed with Nounou and none of the hassles our tasmanian devil Lhassa Hapso brought upon us.
