Organic foods lower pesticides in children

Researchers found that substituting conventional diets with organic foods resulted in a decrease of organophosphate insecticide residues in elementary school children. Traces of malathion and chlorpyrifos decreased to undetectable levels immediately after the introduction of organic diets and remained undetectable until conventional diets were reintroduced. The scientists concluded that the children were most likely exposed to the pesticides exclusively through their diet.

I took a graduate level class in pesticides and this issue was discussed, although not at length. Another related aspect of this finding is that researchers are increasingly finding links between developmental problems and some pesticides, especially in animals, but evidence is increasing to support the findings in humans, too. This is especially an important issue during pregnancy and early childhood, while the fetus/child is growing and changing quickly. Unfortuantely the government doesn't take a precautionary approach on this issue, and until harm is PROVEN, these pesticides remain in use. Additionally, the government is WAY behind in new testing requirements for pesticides (way behind in that they haven't even started yet). It's scary how many unknowns exist surrounding chemicals that we regularly release into the ecosystem and our bodies!!
