I am a master gardener and occasionally give talks to garden clubs. I see a lot of photos on Daves Garden that would be great to use in some of my talks. Would it be OK to write whoever posted the photo to ask permission to use the photo or to ask them to e-mail me a copy to use?

Yes, that's perfectly fine. You can email them by clicking on their username.

As someone who has contributed a number of hosta photos, I would be very happy to have the photos used for such a purpose, but I very much appreciate your asking to use them.

Can't really speak for others but I expect most would be flattered.
