I know you people love Brugs, but I have several and one has almost overcome one section of my yard. I have cut it down to the ground, drilled holes in the trunk, and poured Roundup on it full strength. This thing keeps coming back from shoots and even when I spray those, another one will emerge. I've been trying to get this thing to kick the bucket for over a year now and it must be the Devil's spawn or something. It's about 5 years old and was 11 feet tall last year. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Please! Someone tell me how to kill one.
Um, start digging. Sorry I do not have a better idea. I have one that sends up shoots a ways away from where it is "really" planted. I dug down and chopped the roots out. Luckily the main plant is somewhere I want the thing.
Hey Frogs, I have a deal you can't pass up. Since you're here in SD too, why don't you come over and dig this thing up for me? Not only is it good exercise, but I'll even buy you a Jumbo Jack and a bag of fries (once you're finished, of course). Seriously, to dig this freak of nature up, it would take a backhoe. I think it's a super-strain or something and I've even avoided walking within 3 feet of it when it's in bloom. I'm always afraid that after what I've put it through, the blossoms will reach out and bite me. They should never have banned Nepalm. It might have worked on this evil plant and the wild sumacs growing in my canyon. Well, I take that back. It might have worked on the sumac.
Chop it up in small pieces and send it out in the mail to those of us who are noted for killing cuttings.
I've heard it told "you eat an alligator one bite at a time"... you could get rid of your brug one cutting at a time. Just maybe this Devil's Spawn would live for those of us in areas where they are suppose to die out during the winter. You might just have the heartiest brug stock ever, so crossing it with some of the beautiful wimps would be great!!
Just post that you are giving away cuttings and you'll get mega responses. You'll make people happy and get rid of your brug all at the same time.
Good Luck with whatever you decide to do!!! I had to respond because your posting was so funny.
Judy, not BigDaddy99
yes funny but if are sending cuttings please please put me on list then just maybe i will get one to bloom grow for me.!!
Welcome to the garden, chunx. Where be you in SD? I am in Mira Mesa. We are getting a fair number of folks here now.
Nothing known to man works on the sumacs lol! Perhaps you should feed the brug a diet of clorox. The worst thing I ever got rid of was pampas grass. Nasty plant tears the hide, clothes, and boots from even wary gardeners. Have you thought of a fire pit on that spot, perhaps.
PS You had best spike the cola that comes with that Jumbo Jack Lol. Woman does not dig for potatoes alone.
PPS What kind of monster is it? Post it. Seriously! "Have shovel, you haul." Someone may want it. I am digging one out for zostropes. It is a mere 7 footer though.
Too funny! To think of all the care I give my sissy pinks, and you can't kill that brug. Put it on ebay as hardy under any condition. LOL
Hey frogs, I work in Mira Mesa.
Mary
Chunx, you are going about this the wrong way.The thing to do is to start babying the plant.Give it the best care, fertilizer and water.Spray regularly for bugs.I guarantee you it will die.
Mary, Got time for lunch or an after work libation? Ya need brugs??? I got one 5 gal. guaranteed to bloom in a week lol. Baby of my monster. Trade you for a piece of sissy pink. I seem to be an orange brug mom although snowcone seems to be refusing to die since i set it next to the compost bin.
Janice
DO NOT GIVE IT CARE. DH overwatered my monster while the kids and I were at Dad's ths summer and it grew a foot or so a week!!!!!!
Hi Janice,
Yeah, let's meet up. I think the Rothkirch cutting is actually going to live/root if I can stop myself from fussing over it. If it manages to stay alive it's yours. My other pinks are too small to cut up yet, as I just got started up again this spring. I did take a piece off Equador Pink but it shriveled up on me. Next year I'll have an abundance of sissy pinks to share with you.
Mary
Chunx if you should decide to send out cuttings please put my name on the list. I would be glad to do sase.
Yes by the way what kind do you have????
Linda
First off, I've tried the fire pit and the Brug just got angry and then lived off the ashes.
Linda, I'm not sending out any cuttings of this thing because I'm mowing it off each time I mow the lawn. It sort of keeps it in check, but still sends out shoots. I just sprayed it again this morning with Bayer Brush killer. As for what kind it is, I'm not sure, but it's yellow and then turns a light orange color as it matures. Of course, that's not going to happen again since I'm bound and determined that even if I can't kill this Jezebel, I'm going to have a roadgrader come in here and get it out. However, if this thing emerges in the Spring, I'll let you all know and you can have as many cuttings as you want.
I'm not a Brug fanatic, so I can't really tell you the names of the ones I have. But I have pink, double pink, white and double white, shredded white which stinks like a really cheap bottle of perfume from Big Lots, a Chas. G., and 2 variegated ones that the slugs have found to be a delicacy. All of them are in 16" pots except for Jezebel, the Devil's Spawn. Every Spring I cut the potted ones right down to the soil line and toss on some double strength Peter's liquid, and they start going nuts again. I've had 2 bust out the pots so far.
if you ever do send out a cuttings for this one please let me know. i would love one that actually might grow here for me.
What color is it and is it fragrant?? I'd LOVE to see a photo!!!!
Hey Chunx,
Did you say Double Pink? I'll be right over with my clippers to help you trim that bad boy. There's only been a couple released double pinks. You've got something special there. We're all trying to breed one ourselves. Send pictures so we can all drool all over our keyboards.
Mary (In Poway)
well I would LOVE to have one that you can't kill, I am constantly trying to keep mine alive.
Doris
DOUBLE PINK. OH PLEASE I WANT A CUTTING.
Doris
Me too me too, I want a cutting of the double pink and one of the monster burg also
chunx, what color is the one you are trying to kill?? Please send a pix!!
All of them are in 16" pots except for Jezebel, the Devil's Spawn.
So is the one you are trying to cut down a Jezebel?
Linda
I will kill it for you, Just send it to me *LOL*
Doris
Chunx; Sounds like DH and one of our chinese tallow trees. LOL Have you tried gasoline or diesel fuel?
stownes stop giving her ideas LOL
CORRECTION: I said I had a double pink. Silly me! It's a Herrenhauser Garten, which looks sort of pink to me when it starts to open. It's one of the ones that's in a pot. Forgive me, for I have sinned against you collectors. I told you I wasn't a Brug fanatic. Sorry!
Well, pink or not if you got the temperamental "Harry" (Nickname for HG) to bloom you're doing very well. LOL Perhaps that Jezebel of yours (AKA Devil's Spawn) is making Harry bloom with promises of pollination or some other kind of pillow talk.
Mary
chunx, your story is really something, I have lots of space and would love one like yours to fill some empty spaces. I'm wondering, since the San Diego area is so beautiful (I love your city and the Hotel Del), if your 'hardy' brug might be some other plant that resembles a brug - there is a vine in this area that grows wild and I was told it was an Angel Trumpet. Later, I learned it is actually a Trumpet Vine, and the bloom is similar to one of the brugs that grows in cooler climates. I love my ChasG, especially the foliage, I have several that were small cuttings and i think they will bud before the season is over, seems easy to grow...
How about Texas zone 9, taht kills them all.
Or rent a stump grinder??
The unkillable Brug,
Call it Phoenix, take cuttings
put them on EBay and retire.
Forget the cuttings..I want some of Chunks dirt!
LOLOLOL....my face hurts from smiling/laughing!
Have you tried digging it out? Brugs are the one tree my husband does not mind digging out for it is so shallow rooted. I had a Frosty that would not die either. It was years and years old. He dug it out in about 10 minutes.
Doris and Laura, you guys make me laugh! LOL
kell you started me on this rampage, REMEMBER.
Doris
As for the dirt remark, hey, this is San Diego! We don't have dirt. We have sand and rock with some clay in it. I did not amend the soil where I planted this monster. I assume there was once a toxic dump underneath my house and the Devil's Spawn is feeding off it, not to mention birds it snatches out of the sky.
Several people have sent me dmails asking me where I got this. I got a cutting from someone on the internet that I'm not supposed to mention (I think), but you can go to my feedbacks on GW and figure it out. I got it 5 years ago, stuck it in a one gallon pot, and then when it became rootbound in about 30 seconds, I dug a hole just to fit (since I'm a lazy slug), and stuck Jezebel in the ground. I watered and used double fertilizer for about a month until it was on it's own and then left it alone. The rest is history. Currently, it is a large stump with small shoots coming out since I mow over it at least once a week. Die, Monster, die! Did I mention that this is the ONLY brug that snails and slugs don't attack? True!
My Herrenhauser Garten has bloomed quite well and it's only a year old. I didn't start putting fertilizer on it until June, so it was late blooming, but has done fine. It's currently about 4.5 feet tall from the soil line of the pot to the top. Everything I pot up gets put in Whitney Farms potting soil and I use Watersorb so I don't have to water as often.
My favorite one is the pink. It blooms the most and doesn't have much of that really sweet scent. But stay tuned in Spring, I may just decide to toss all of them except for the pink. I tend to get bored with the same plants. We don't even want to go into what I did with a 2 year old rose garden.
Do you mean to say you will tend them all winter then maybe let us have cuttings, WOW that is really generouse of you, PLEASE make sure my name is first, or close to the top. What flower are you looking for next *LOL*
Dortis
Me 2nd for a cutting of Herrenhauser Garten ...
Kareoke, "tending" them in our climate, means hacking them back so they do not take up more than their share of real estate-especially in the ground.
I laughed too re:dirt. My "natural stone" paths are rocks that came from my yard. My DH is from Utah. He tried to dig out the area where we removed our lawn WITHOUT watering it down first. Broke the pick!! Went muttering back to HD for a stronger model.
Hmmmmm Snails and slugs do not like it. Perhaps I will be there with my shovel after all.
chunx, you posted >>>We have sand and rock with some clay in it. >>>>>
This is very funny, because there is a group of us on another thread and we have been trying order a very similar mixture and 'they' say it's wonderful for brugs. I wasn't planning to order, but, my goodness, your 'success' makes me think I should reconsider...
No one digs more than one hole a day in San Diego because you run into rocks held tight by clay and dirt. If you see someone hunched over on Monday morning you know they've been gardening over the weekend. I'd like to rent a bulldozer and dig out my yard 6 feet down and replace with loam imported from somewhere with kinder softer dirt. It's the climate that keeps us all here. San Diego, the home of great weather and bad traffic. LOL

Mary....Here's a suggestion for you and everyone else in SoCal. You know there is a Starbucks in every stinking supermarket here anymore, one on every block, and 432 in one mall. I call them and ask them to save me their used grounds. They will and you pick them up that evening. I get tons of grounds about once a week and mix it with my garden soil. Then buy a bunch of earthworms and toss them in it. You'll be really surprised. I don't know how you would do it in a yard since the grounds will dry out fast if they're not mixed with soil. I have my yard aerated twice a year and then spread the grounds with a fertilizer spreader so a lot of it goes in the holes. Seems to loosen the soil quite a bit. You might try that and get some Soil Buster from Home Depot. I spread it at the same time. As for digging in my yard, I do but once I go down 4", I hit a boulder or something.

I just go rid of the yard lol! Got tired of the lawns and am making them go away. You can find my house. I am the only one on the street with a 15' brug blooming away in the front yard. The 5' sages and lavenders are a dead give away too. Definately time to prune but it is all in bloom so I do not have the heart.
I had my butterfly in a 20 gal pot before putting it in the ground. Never again! I about killed myself digging a hole to put it in.
Some of the starbucks put the grounds in cute little silver bags. My local one just double bags the whole mess and I go out looking like an overburdened Santa. The earthworms in my compost love it.
