Adding the Address link to an individuals Garden Site.......

I know the admins all spoil us as it is, making our DG experience as simple and easy as possible - which makes us all want to ask for more ...... Knowing I'm already spoiled and becoming more of a single click information seeker - Is there a simple way to add a link for an individuals address to their page ? The page that you can select to send them a private DG email....


or maybe I just do it the hard way and with my slow dial up become impatient .....

vs71099, are you suggesting a direct link from the person's profile/member page to their address in the DG address exchange? The DG address exchange list does have several hundred entries in it.

To send them a private DG email you just click on their blue user name and then follow instructions.

I think they're wanting to see their snail-mail address on their member page.

If so, my guess is that's not technically feasible (but Dave may prove me wrong ;o) The address feature here is intentionally kept under "lock and key" and only subscribers that post their own address can see/access it.

To make it visible on a members' homepage would require some fancy footwork and cross-checking to see if you had posted your address in order for them to be visible.

What I honed in on was:

I figured they were asking if the address could be linked to or appear on the homepage, (which I understood to be the "page you select to send them a private DG mail...")

(And that kind of made sense when I thought about the fact the member address is not linked to their member page at all. But there are some good reasons they're not linked together; namely privacy concerns.)

TuttiFrutti and Terry are the winners...... Each of us has a member page that allows others to send an email, view comments posted from other members, view comments we post and go to an individuals journal..... I was hoping we could put a link here that would take us to a persons address ......

The only way I know to get to the address is to go to Extras/ DG Address Exchange / then scroll for the name.....

I was wanting to be lazy because this route takes you out of the thread you are reading, my dial up is sooooo slow and then if it is a new person I have to remember what name I'm looking for .....

Is the link on our page really a privacy thing.... because I can get the info .... it just requires multiple steps ?

I'm not really keen on this idea, although I can certainly see its use.

The trouble is that, I'm not really keen on the whole address exchange list at all. I only put it up after the situation was so out of control that I had to do something.

There was once a member that maintained the whole thing (without my consent or approval) and they were passing a spreadsheet around. Well, when the member started having problems interacting with the rest of the site, there were a LOT of concerns voiced to me about the power that she was weilding over everyone else. So, I took the project away from her (and she's gone from the site now, obviously).

So the address_exchange exists for those who want it, but I very much wish to downplay its role. It's a privacy disrupter if there ever was one.

OH....I did not know the history ...... I can certainly see how in some situations it can get out of control... Thanks for keeping an eye on this stuff - its unfortunate that you have to ........

When I first started Dave's we emailed our address information but anymore if you are planning a trade most DG'ers just say - I'm in the address exchange...... so I was looking for a shortcut .......

I like the address exchange and would hate to see it removed because of mis-use but I can understand why you'd like to and may have to remove it altogether .....

I, too, have become so lazy I hate to click twice where it could be once.
When I was little the telephone was a wooden box on the wall with a crank. You picked up the ear piece and listened whether the line was free. Then you turned the crank a couple of times and waited for the faint garbled voice of the operator. You would ask her to connect you with a four or five digit number and then were surprized when it actually worked.
Need I say more?
