When I was in high school...
i'm laughing so hard at this thread, lol. I was also the proud owner of a pair of silver parachute pants......omg, the things we wore and we have the nerve to berate our kids for sagging? lol.
omg Jen... I had black ones... and a pair of blue jeans that were cut and frayed every 2 inches from the bottom of the butt to the bottoms..... wore them to concerts LMAO
Wow talk about flashbacks haha !!! Had to get out my memory book for this one, what fun!
Peg roled jeans
Mullets, Spiked and Mall hair
Punk
preppy was going out
NEON
Ripped up jeans, some we tie dyed with bleach
Penny loafers, with a dime in each one in case you had to call home.
Safety pins for earrings, yea thought my mom was going to kill me over that one!!
I had neon plaid pants, the big bow in my hair and one lace glove !!
I was SO COOL.
Guns N Roses
AC DC
Alf
Loved the song Red Red Wine
Santa Barbara was a huge soap opera
A gallon of gas was .88
Graduated in 1989 with a class total of 39
Can we say small town girl !
Well, I graduated in 1975.
The drinking age was 18.
We had a smoking room in high school.
Bell bottoms were in and rib shirts (tight ribbed knit shirts).
Long hair, long, long hair. (I sat on mine in high school).
I'm trying to think of some of the silly sayings:
Groovy (oh my gosh, I hate that one)
Far out (that one's even worse)
Gas was .29 cents a gallon.....WOW!
Cigarettes were .25 cents a pack.
Bread was .29 cents a loaf
Milk was $1.29 gallon.
I got .50 cents an hour babysitting.
I rode a bicycle everywhere (a banana bike, I had to have and worked all summer long babysitting for). Didn't get my license until I was almost 19 years old.
Minimum wage was $1.65.
You could keep your house and car unlocked all the time!!!
McDonald's came out with the Quarter Pounder when I was in high school. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. Now, we call it poop food! :)
Favorite music:
The Eagles
Led Zeppelin
Jim Croce :( I cried when I heard he died in a plane crash.
John Cougar Mellencamp (still love him)
CCR
Janis Joplin
Andy Williams
The Smother Brothers
(I loved all kinds of music, still do).
Used to listen to Masterpiece Theatre (the mahabre) everynight at 10:00 p.m. Lie in my bed and it would scare me to pieces.
I was real skinny because if I wasn't riding my bike, I walked everywhere. Sometimes 10 miles to town and 10 miles back.
Looking back, I was crazy. :)
Thanks for letting me ramble. Kathy
Kathy, My mom graduated in 1970. She literally ran away with the carnival when she was 19, with my dad (she knew him 5 days LOL) I was named after Janis Joplin. I have everything Jim Croce ever did, and most of JJ's also.

The grossest trend we had was the no socks ala don johnson with those leather white soled "boat" shoes. You could smell everyones feet sweat! Worse than sagging in my mind...
Ataris were 'the' thing to have and pac man ruled!

wasnt that the year they also came out with the "new" coke? blahhhk..
Janis, You have a good namesake. I still clean the house singing Mercedes Benz and Me and Bobby McGee. A great singer gone early. :( Kathy
Many of you are talking about the era of my DD's age and I remember her wearing those parachute pants all the time. She even had her hair cut in the Farrah cut.
Do any of you old timers remember the "Preachers Jacket"? It was a jacket with no collar, but had a banded collar and was usually buttoned to the top. That is what my DH was wearing when I first met him, and I thought he was so handsome in it. lol Oh, yeah, and today is my 38th Wedding Anniversary to this handsome guy. hehe
BTW, I will be attending my 40th Class Reunion tomorrow night, 1965. I am really excited to see some of my old class mates. We received a notice asking for information on missing classmates and also got a notice posting our dear friends that have passed away. I was so sorry to see that one of my old flames had died and also a childhood girlfriend.
Wish me luck.

Donna, My 30th is next weekend, but I've already made 3 trips home this year for my mother, that I just can't swing the 4th right now :( It would've been fun to see everyone. I went to my 5th and 10th and they were great. I hope you have a wonderful time. :) Kathy
yah and then pepsi almost ran coke out of biz by using michael j fox and the "choice of the new generation" thing... Anyone remember "where's the beef?"
Have a blast Donna!
This message was edited Aug 26, 2005 11:18 AM
Oh, I had forgotten about the "Where's the beef" lady. I loved that commercial.
Misty I had to chuckle when I read about your house cleaning music. The image of me weekly dancing around and cleaning with my wireless headphones on so I could crank up the volume and not disturb everyone The only part I have to sing out loud no matter who is still sleeping is Hey Hey Hey Bobby Mc Geeeeee .
I had time warp the other day my DD was complaining she was out of gas and out of money so I handed her a $5.00 and she looked at me like I was crazy. I remember the days when you could get enough change out of the sofa to have gas for a day or two.
Have a great time, Donna!!
My 20th is in the planning stages right now, egads, lol. I look at the people that i went to school with and some of them look really old....of course i dont look like that........do I???, lol.
Remember some of these? http://eightiesclub.tripod.com/id214.htm I still hear alot of these on the radio and of course i turn it up and my kids think i'm so dumb.
The theme of my senior prom was Yesterday Once More from The Carpenters (who, by the way, I used to love to listen to and still do). I am thinking that the words that song will hold true to me today. :(
Fun pictures...I had permed hair, too.
My 20-year reunion was this year, but I was never sent an invitation. This is evidently a long-standing tradition, since it began with no invitation for the 5-year reunion (from what I hear it was basically a keg party) or 10-year reunions.
I'm very glad that high school is only a microcosm of the "real world". I've never really had a desire to sit around and smalltalk three hours with people who wouldn't have given me the time of day back then. I love the big world a whole lot more than high school. :)
Don't have time to scan it now, but I think I've located my yearbooks.
Darius,
Thank you for the Anniversery comments.
The Preachers Jacket was just a little different, as it was a little shorter I think....but it had the same look. My DH's jacket was a woolen dark green. I can't believe I even remember the color. lol
Kim, I attended my 5 yr. and 25 yr. reunion and what a difference the 20 yrs made in the people. At the 5 yr. one, they were all still in their same cliche's and showing off to their peers, but at the 25, many of them were already grandparents, gray, fat and bald...hehe This made it a lot more pleasant and I even felt more comfortable with MY lifestyle, then they probably were. Tomorrow night will sure be interesting, that's for sure. I'll let you all know how it turns out.
Donna
Chiming in here after enjoying this sentimental journey!!
I took my first daughter to college yesterday, reliving a lot of memories, but the highlight was when her roommate (and she lucked out in that department!!) asked if she could put her Beatles posters here, pointing to a spot on the wall. She looked over at me and said "they're a GREAT band!" I said yeah, I've heard of them...are they NEW?
I was pleased to see their combined collections of "oldies" - both movies and music. Some things will never be beat - yup, Me and Bobby McGee among others! Dark Side of the Moon (my kids were surprised i knew all those songs). And the funky colors of the 70's are all over.
Couldn't find a HS photo, but this is a portrait photo taken in the 9th grade when I was 14...
I still have the locket although the tiny printed Lord's Prayer that was in it disintegrated long ago.
If I remember correctly, the sweater collar was an add-on angora collar that tied in the back... those were very popular back then.
Oh my gosh Darius. You are so pretty in the portrait. Add on collars, I had forgotten all about them. When we wore sweaters we had collars to go with them. If I remember, mine had snaps in the front under the collar. Another thing this thought brought back was the dickies that we wore with V-neck sweaters. I was a cheerleader, and we used them all the time.
Dickies, LOL. Never had one, they came along the next year after I graduated and had no place in my working clothes.
I'm only remembering what was popular in high school after reading JoanJ and MistyMeadows posts. Probably a good thing to not remember, especially those gym uniforms! Some schools here had smoking areas too. The styles, especially bell bottoms, were ugly then and they were still ugly when they tried to come back ! ANY available car was good, and nobody had a home computer.
Remembering some songs and shows.
Helen Reddy
Peter Frampton & his "talking" guitar
Bennie and the Jets
Heart
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
A Night At The Opera
Styx
The Hustle
The Streak
My Dingaling
Loving You by Minnie Ripperton (aaaahh)
Telephone Man
The Who's Tommy
Annie Hall
Disco was born. So was Star Wars and Saturday Night Live
Welcome Back Kotter
Sonny & Cher
Carol Burnett
Atari
Tie a Yellow Ribbon round the old oak tree
Billy don't be a hero
Yeah, gym uniforms were ugly. I had the brain fart to stop at an embroidery shop and have mine professionally embroidered with my name... a touch of class. Didn't help me get better grades, LOL.
LOL not that gym uniforms are a fashion statement now, but at least t-shirt and shorts isn't torture and doesn't make you feel as self-conscious.
Do you all realize that bell bottoms are in style again this year for the fall. Saw some in the store the other day, and groaned. What do they say, everything old is new again. Got that right. So what do you suppose will be next?
They work good here for sweeping sidewalks. They suck water up tp the knee in a rain. Why would you wear them ? Because Wally World sells them!
Bernie
defoecat, here they havev been back in for like 3 years..... I've been wearing them that long. I can't stand the high waisted tight at the ankle jeans anymore. All my jeans are low rise, and flare legs (they aren't bell bottoms anymore they are flares LOL) my kids want them for school too. The prices are way to high but look at http://www.shopsoulfire.com at their brazilian jeans. I buy mine from them when they are on sale. Got a buy one get one free offer the other day, want to get a pair or two.
Janis
I like bootcut jeans, but don't have any truly wide, bellbottoms (not yet, anyway). We had one-piece gym uniforms when I was in junior high school. They had red shorts bottoms and the tops were sleeveless red and white striped...HORIZONTAL stripes. We had our last names spelled out on a leg of the shorts with big, white iron-on letters. Ugh!
we had those attractive one piecers too, but ours were blue and white, our name wasn't on them because they weren't ours, they were used over and over! Glad that is over.
We also had those one piece uniforms, but ours had aqua shorts and horizontal striped white and aqua tops. Ugg. It's a wonder any of us had boyfriends after seeing us in those. LOL
You al had fancy gym clothes. Ours were navy blue percale with snaps, of all things. You had to buy the 2 sizes too big or you could not bend over. Way Sexy!!
Frogs, Ours were just like yours! I hated them and I hated getting undressed in front of all those other girls. I was always the last one out on the gym floor because I would loiter so long, waiting for most, if not all, to be out of the locker room. To this day, I can't stand the smell of a locker room, it makes me nauseous and not just because of the smell!
Bell bottoms, I remember ours were the bigger the better. When you tried to walk, you tripped over them because they were so big. (I had forgotten this and have my little comments when I see the kids wearing their terribly baggy pants that hang down too low. I guess I need to remember and be more understanding.)
But who else used to cut the seam off the bottom and walk around with them all frayed; we wore them longer than they should've been and the back would wear out from where one would walk on them! And let's not even talk about all the mud and germs we must've picked up. Oh my....I would have been cringing forever if that were today!!!
:) Kathy
wow, i thot the 70s were a blur for me, howeverrrrr....i have just oh yeah oh yeah oh yeah'd ...all the way thru this post, what a hoot.
wys
Darius,
I love your story about the embroidery on your gym suit. We have to wear these navy blue short one piece suits. I hated them enough but we were told to but our initials on the label. My grandma was visiting and instead of using a waterproof pen on the inside label she had to embroidery my initials in a big hot pink satin stitch right on the front. I know she thought she was being a good grandma but I hated that embroidery.
We also had to wear dresses to school. I would have loved to ordered all my dresses from the JC Penny, Montgomery Ward and Sears catalogs but my grandma made all our dresses. When she died my mom reminded me of all the nice dresses grandma used to make for me. And I'd forgiven her at that time. Now I know she was just trying to help but at the time I hated those dresses.
But I grew up and am pretty much normal at this time so I guess it didn't hurt me that much!
Nancy
OMg and the slumber parties! We stuck each others undies in the freezer and everything...
Drink a glass of Pepsi and 2 asprin and you'd be drunk. We'd never even consider drinking at a slumber party but thought we were drunk after our "Pepsi cocktail".
I read the beginning of this to my SIL and she absolutely rolled. She is six years younger than me and really gives me a hard time. We did both graduate from the same school and were both on drill team.
We ended up chuckling pretty hard over stirrup pants coming around in our era. We wore those with long shirts or sweaters over them, even belted sometimes! I was the first person to wear them to my school and people made fun of me for two months. I stood my ground and wouldn't you know everyone was wearing them two months later! I only got to see my dad in the summers so he would pick me up and I would read fashion magazines all the way to Iowa or Florida then hit the trendy malls and stock up. LOL
Does anyone else remember the Forenza jeans from The Limited and the v-neck sweaters worn backwards so that half your back was exposed? What about the big jute bags with leather handles?
We also made jewelry out of coated eletrical wiring, brass fishing hooks and safety pins. Geesh.
Believe it or not, I was voted best dressed my senior year. You sure couldn't tell by looking at me now! :)
thinking about what we did sure puts into perspective what the kids do these days. I cut the necks off of my sweatshirts so that I could wear them off my shoulder a la Flashdance. Now my niece draws all over her clothes and her shoes with permanent markers and it drives me nuts!
