Look what I found!

She Lies!, She Lies! Come on you don't think this little innocent face could do evil do you?????? She pulled the leaves off just to make me look bad, didn't she?

Picabo I'm so sorry that your worm got his face caught in a blender :( . I'm sure you still love him. lol!

My beautiful worm had his bath today. We had a nice hard rain and he slept right thru it. Looks brand spankin new.
He finally woke up at about 4:30pm. He's having his dinner.

He does look so refreshed...Makes me want to go turn the hose on my little family. Maybe thats their problem, they are baking... LOL LOL

Aberdeen, NC

Dinner?? He looks like he is pigging out!! LOL I heard they like hot sauce, is that true?

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I don't know if they like hot sauce but I imagine they would taste pretty good breaded, fried and served with a little dab of it. Yummy!

Betty don't forget to spray under the arms and behind the ears. lol!

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

Should we move to the recipe forum. How many ways can you cook hornworms????? Lets see baked with diced tomatoes, that has got to be on the top of my list. LOL

Aberdeen, NC

OH, I was thinking more of using it in a soup instead of okra. I wonder if it would look similiar when it is sliced.
Okra will never be the same now!! LOL

Sunday is bath night isn't it? Have to make sure they are nice and clean...

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

I have always enjoyed okra anyway you fix it. You have given it a whole new meaning, I don't think I can ever eat it again. ROTFL

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

He was gone this morning. I did learn something more about hornworms from this worm #2. When they start hanging in the hot sun like that they are ready to drop from the plant and move on to Mothdom. The first worm did this too. Very interesting critters.

I also learned to let the new brugmansia shoots grow under some brugs. Normally I would remove those shoots. If I find a hornworm in the tops of a mother tree then I just move him to the bottom or move him to a different brug that has the new shoots. He can eat till his heart is content.

Aberdeen, NC

That is a fast cycle for the little critters!! Maybe the hot sun fries their brain and they have no where else to go. LOL I think that is nice of you to give the little guys special accommodations. Not everyone is so generous.

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

How long till the little hummers start crawling out of the ground and flying? I love the "Hummer Stage" as much as the worm stage.

I have seen lots of worms who must have fallen off. I think there are three more on one plant. I have kept them off the other plants. I have looked but not seen them on by brugs, just on the tomatoes. Maybe that is why they are different colors you reckon???

I think that we have been real kind to them during their visit. We may have got right in their face with our cameras, and made fun. It was all done with love and we learned a lot. We have been very careful to not hurt them, OK I did step on one and I don't think he will ever Fly.

Let me know when you start to see the hummers.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

With the first worm I was blessed with the opprtunity to watch him hatch from the egg. I'll probably never get to witness that event again. It took him 2 weeks to develop. I got very attached to him. Now when I see another hornworm it reminds me of the very first one.

Interesting that Worm 2 jumped after he learned about the plot to cook him. Worm 1 jumped shortly after I said that I considered nailing him to the fence. Sensitive little boogers. Worm 3 ... poor little thing. Wonder what will make him jump someday?

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

Have you ever told him the story that ends with him flying up, up and over your head over the trees and out of sight??? That would make me jump..

Or maybe the one about the wasp that are looking for him so they can stick the little white things on him so he dies? That will make him jump. awwwwwww

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

If I remember correctly it takes another 4 weeks for him to hatch as a moth.

Odd that I've stepped on so many of these in the past and they didn't fly either. Wonder why? lol!
It wasn't until I got in a worms face and started taking his pictures every day that I began to appreciate the Lord's imagination and His creativity when it comes to caterpillars of all kinds. ... it's all so awsome.
Now if only I can start seeing some of the hummers in person that will be a joy!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Betty I will make sure worm 3 hears only the good stuff. Please don't scare my new baby with your horrid tales of okra and wasp eggs. If you dare bring up okra or wasp eggs in front of him I will tell you the fly away story and let you jump! rofl ;)

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Wait, what, what??? I don't know the story about them flying up or stepping on them and them jumping up. ??

I do know the story about them being parasitized tho. :( My husband dug up a cocoon and we put it in a little bug hut to see what it was. I forgot about it, then a few days later I smelled something dead and nasty and saw that it had broken open and these NASTY worm things were coming out of the cocoon!!! BBBBLECH!!! It was so gross so I just put it on the side of the house so I wouldn't smell it, then later I saw that fire ants were attacking the worms! More blech! But I was rewarded recently with a visitor.

Too Cool

Aberdeen, NC

I saw my first hummer moth Sat. night. He was enjoying my hoyas that are blooming. That guy was big...he didn't stay around very long. I haven't seen any wormies around here. I wonder where he came from. This area has been a high tobacco and cotton growing place. As a result, there are not a lot of insects or birds around. Guess they don't like the agent orange stuff they spray on the cotton foilage. My place is turning into an organic haven for critters ;) It is sure nice seeing some around.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Konkrete you lucky girl! That's a real pretty one!

Karen maybe he was a she and she left a few eggs scattered around.

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

Bad News in Tennessee, The wasp found my worms. I rescued one and moved him away to see if he can make it. Everybody else is gone. :((

OH, how sad..... That is a big load that little guy is carrying.
Reminds me of okra and rice,, add a little tomatoe.....if all else fails.

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Awwwww he has parasites! this isn't from the wasps :-( I'm so sorry...he must be in pain with those yucky things on him!

http://creatures.ifas.ufl.edu/field/wasp_pupae.htm

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Karen ... rofl ... you are terrible!

This is sad Betty. Sorry it happened to your worm kid!

Julie it is from wasps. He is already dead according to the link. No pain. Just one of natures ways of helping to keep these hornworm critters under control. .... sad to watch.

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

OH NOOOOOOOOOO this is so sad! I'm sorry :-(

Aberdeen, NC

Maybe we should contact a Hospice network or something.
I think we should organize a wake for the little guy when his time comes. He has been such an inspiration to all of us.!!
Reminds me of how light my burden is to carry compared to his.

HMMM, with some sausage I bet it could be marketed as a high protein new weight loss diet !! Better then Lean Cuisine.

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

Sad Face here. But feeling better.

Brug...Thanks for the link, they said to let them be so they would grow up, turn into wasp and kill other Wormies. No way!! I sent them all off on that great journey to Wormie land with a quick two step, reminds me I need to clean off the bottom of my shoes. UCK!!! Maybe DH will do it for me LOL LOL

Horsewoman...You are soooo baddd. I'm still planning the wake... :(( In this time of pain you suggest eating them. Come to think of it before I did the Two Step, I did offer them to "Regis" my peacock. He just looked at me like I have really lost it this time.

Talking about sausage and rice I need to start some supper.

Betty

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

You are both terrible meanies! For your information little baby worm 3 has already disappeared. It's because of rumors about sausages and two steppin and feeding to peacocks I'm sure. I hope you feel good about talking like this in front of him and making him jump prematurely. ... sniff!

Aberdeen, NC

Oh, Gee, Little baby wormie 3 wasn't around very long. Did you even get any pics of him for the family tree? I think you need to put nets under your brugs to catch them!! You do realize you have suicidal wormies don't you. You must do everything you can to protect them. You would not want to be turned into Protective Services for Wormies would you? ROLF

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

He's on my thumb in the picture above. Maybe he did not like the brug I moved him to. Maybe something ate him. Maybe he hitched a ride with big worm last night.

Aberdeen, NC

OHHH, he is just the little ittie bittie guy. Did you put up any missing wormie poster? How about offering a reward for his return?

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

Just got a call from the ASPCW...Saw it on Caller ID but didn't answer. What could they want with me. I just put the little guys out of pain. OK who reported me. My Shoes are clean... I promise just ask DH...LOL

Aberdeen, NC

OH, OH .............. you are in trouble now. Better get an alibi. Now how did you get DH to clean your shoes? He must be a sweetheart to do that!! LOL

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

More bad news, your cat isn't/wasn't dead in that pic. (The one in the link is dead tho) I don't think it's a very easy death for them but I don't think they are wired like us so not sure if they feel much.

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

That's why I did the two step. I don't like to see little things hurt. Least I made it quick for everybody. One was just a little thin thing. I don't think he was having much fun being wasp food, :((

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Eeeewww, I didn't know you were serious. Blech. I flush them. I can't squish bugs or the field rats I'm collecting.

ok, that's a lie...I squish milkweed bugs and aphids and spiders and others, but nothing that is real squishy to begin with.

ROFLBMO VICKI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you guys are Hillarious!

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

You are toooo funny. Love the family tree. That looks like my dearly departed red thinger on Blondies poster. I don't think I miss him any more.
DH came in and looked over my shoulder. He just shook his head and walked away, he was mumbling something about men wearing white coats, won't be long now, I can have my computer full time, etc etc etc. He was doing a silly little dance and giggling. I don't know what that was about... Any ideas??

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

OK ...How I have done it, I hit the wrong button and the Wormie Family Tree is the Screen saver on my computer. :((

When DH Sees that the picture of his favorite Race Horse is gone and a wormy is in its place he is going to do the Two Step on my head. I think I am going shopping and I am going NOW!

Hope to see you later...
