Coffee and...Part 26...! :-D

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Isn't it nice we stayed married for years and did not or do not run to a lawyer to get a divorce after a couple of quarrels as so many do now? I remember the mail lady when she brought my mail with many cards, she asked what the celebration is, I answered it is our 50th wedding anniversary, she said , oh my , I can.t imagine living with one man that long! LOL

DFCat - A fanny, to the English, it is a part of the specifically female anatomy below the belt line. A bum is what you sit on and a bun is something you eat, known over here as a cup cake. I laughed at the "words substituted for ours" in your post. Its the other way about - the language is called English because thats where its from. ;>))) LOL
I find it fascinating that we are divided by a common language. Sometimes its easier to go to a place where you expect the language to be different. That way you don't make awful mistakes. A fag is a cigarette and that is dangerous, because "he's just popped out for a ... "is open to misinterpretation. Its also a term used in boarding schools for a first year who is a "servant" for a Prefect. That too is another difference a fee paying boarding school, like Harrow or Eton, is a Public School. That I found really confusing.
When I first got here I nearly got arrested - there was this large sign that said
"No parking on the pavement"
I very carefully made sure that all my wheels were on the road or carriageway. In the UK the pavement is what pedestrians walk on - the sidewalk - the bit you drive on would be called the tarmac, the carriageway or the roadway. Fortunately the policeman took one look at my UK drivers licence and decided it was too much hassle - he just told me to "learn to speak English!" Which almost - but not quite had me
a. In stitches laughing
and b. retaliating with "but I do. Why don't you folk use it properly!!" Just as well I didn't I think!!!LOL
I now have a Texas drivers licence and I'm begining to learn the language!!

Carol, just don't fall in with the younger crowd, as they use slang that is undecipherable to the over 30 crowd!!
I find it very interesting that "fanny" here is the backside, as in get off your fanny and do something.

You are soooooo right, we are the ones (americans) who have changed the Kings English to fit our needs.

Please keep on using these terms, as I find them fascinating.

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

In times gone by I have dated a Brit or two and in my naivete' spoken words in "Amercian" that were lewd and insulting in the "English" language. What are ya gonna do?

The Department of Transportation has taken the notion we need "round abouts" on the roads down here in S. Florida. Close in to my neighborhood they have taken 90% of them back out again because the Americans do not understand the concept. Too many cars ended up in the middle of the round. Further north in the next county, they are putting more in and peeling more cars and people off the roadway. Americans just can't get it.

I am an American, but have been in England and experienced the true "Round Abouts" on the roadways and we just can't get it over here. LOL

And why is everybody up so late tonight?

:^)))

(Zone 8b)

Molly, I'm always up late bed time is around 12.300 and its only 11pm here right now!! I get up late too - just not singing to the same tune as the rest of the world.

And here I am at 4 am, sitting in my jammies, reading threads! That's the result of my napping this afternoon. Oh well....!! I'm sure nobody is reading this, so I must be talking to myself! Nite all. Or is that good morning?

Starkville, MS

Morning meezer - you're not quite alone. My whole system goes weird sometimes and I end up wide awake at 4:00am. DH sleeps through it, and the cats just love having me up to pet and love on them.
I think Darius needs to make a sign for that man to hang on the back - "Caution, do not step in exhaust!".

Hope you have a great day.

It won't be for lack of starting early!!! LOL

At least now its light enough to get and do my tour and decide what project is most needing to get on with. Unfortunatly, I already know I have got to get the weedeater busy, but I always hope I'll find something easier and more fun!

But first, one more cuppa and some more fun reading!

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

I was awake this morning at 5:30. Resisted the urge to get up so slept for another 45 minutes.

My dogs are on an early potty schedule so they were the first order of business, after putting coffee on to brew of course. Now, they are starving to death and must have breakfast. Well that's done now.

I'm off to the beach for a morning swim with my neighbor. I am trying to remember when the last time I went to the beach was. Might have been the summer of '99. I have been to the ocean plenty when I had my boat, but the beach was something we just didn't do. It should be pretty peaceful there, it's not tourist season yet, school is back in session and it's a work day. And hopefully the water will be a little cooler than the swimming pool. Pool water is about 96 degrees now, surf temp should be a little cooler than that, maybe 90.

Summer is almost over and I haven't gone scuba diving even once. Since my life changed, I have found new friends, but none of them are into that sport and diving is something you should have a buddy to do with, for safety.

Well, I'm off, I'll check in with yall later.

Ahh, we have nightowls and early morning risers!! That's the best! I had to get up 3 times last night to visit the little girls room - I just hate it when that happens. I was awake from 2 something on. I should have just gotten up. Thinking about all the stuff I didn't get done this summer. Here's the list of NOT dones: bedroom painted, cellarway painted, junk closet de junked, laundryroom organized, big closet gutted, plant room painted and reorganized. Oh my - I need a housekeeper to help me. Guess a woman's work is never done.

Darius - good pic. I would love a load of any kind of manure. Our ground here is really depleated of nutrients. I put my compost on every year, but just don't have enough. I haven't been as diligent in putting down alphalfa tea this year tho - sore arm got in the way.

My garden neighbor's has her beds so nice. She is continually rearranging things. She has long beds and has the same flowers repeated down the bed - very nice looking. Mine are huge kidney shaped things with a multitude of everything thrown in - no rhyme or reason, but several are ringed with impatients and that part makes it look nice. I would like mine more like hers, but just can't move everything!! hmmm whats a gal to do?

Someone will check on the gal that didn't show up for lunch. We are a close bunch.!!

Time for a garden walk....need to check on the slugs roaming around....

This is just to let you know I'm here and reading...even though I'm not getting much of a chance to write. You wouldn't really want to know what's going on in my life right now, anyway...trust me. ;-)

I've just started another session...it's located here

(Some days I think we need a "Daily" thread like a group of us started on my old photography site. hehehehe)

No company for a swim this morning. She just stopped by to say she forgot about a dentist appt this morning. Oh well, maybe I will go by myself. I could use a good vigorous swim.

I also took a stroll out in the yard. It rained last night so the garden is starting out fresh and cool. I think it must have rained hard (although I never heard a thing, no insomnia for me last night). Some of the 4 o'clocks were bent over.

I just went over to check some photos I took last August of this back yard, just before I moved in. The area along the back fence was over grown with wild vines and ancient ugly asparagus fern. I spent a lot of time pulling that thorny fern up, but certainly couldn't get the miles and miles of root systems eradicated and 3 bottles of Roundup couldn't kill that stuff. So I decided Sweet Potato vine would grow there and hopefully take over. That worked for the view but the nasty ferns still grew. So against advice from many, I planted 4 o'clock seeds, then I got some roots at the Jax roundup for other colors. Although in the end I find I only have white and pink flowers, I think the 2 plant types have done their job. The pathway between the vines and my bench trellis is getting overgrown, and so is the asparagus fern. I'm not sure how much longer I should let this go on before I start the next project of eradicating tater vines and 4 o'clocks. :^))))

It's not in my nature to have a neat and organized garden, so I don't even try.

Morning everyone, I did go to sleep around 4 AM ar least I got 3 1/2 hours of a good rest. Your are right, Sarv, it is good to have nightowls and bright eyed day trippers on this thread makes for a lot of reading which is so nice, ar least for me.
I always wanted a garden like your neighbor, Sarv, but it never turned out that way always helter scelter all over the place, guess I never had the right spot for that kind of look .
Another gorgeus morning, only 56', guess I shall look to see if some tomatoes turned red.

good morning, gang :)
i used to be a notorious nightowl. now, i have a hard time staying awake past 10pm, and once i'm asleep that's it - nothing wakes me up. well, maybe the dog is still capable ... a cold wet nose is hard to ignore.

we had a little rain in the wee hours this morning, always a welcome sight to wake up to. everything looks refreshed & green out there. the dh brought a load of leaf compost home last week and i've been waiting for a cool-down to start moving it to the beds. ok, so it has cooled down now ... i know what i'll be doing today, unless i can come up with a great excuse not to :) i've been on garden over-drive since march, and this gob is wearing down. now, if i could have gone to the beach with molly this morning, that would be a good excuse :)

i went on a cutting-taking spree this summer. a new skill for me, and i went overboard with it. some things i've already put in the ground, but i've got all these pots of stuff still waiting for homes. more stuff than i have space for. like, why did i take 10 burford holly cuttings? there's a local plant swap in september so maybe i can unload a lot of it there.
maybe it's my mother's imprinting, but i can NOT dispose of a plant. i've got a salvia "may night" that has failed to thrive wherever i've put it for the last 5 years ... it's a pitiful specimen in my yard ... i was so proud of myself for about five minutes after i summoned the will to just yank it and toss it on the compost pile and be done with this love/hate relationship ... with the sixth minute i was replanting it. *shrug*

a neighbor brought over a grocery bag full of figs from his tree yesterday. i dusted off the dehydrator and loaded it up. it's gonna take some fine-tuning to get it right ... there seems to be a very short window of perfection and i've missed it this first go-round. not sure i'd bother but the dh loves dried figs. i also got a cutting of this guy's fig tree ... at least i know where it'll be planted :)

darius - got a huge kick out of your pic of that high-mileage car :) i am
intrigued by your bit about building a two-story addition for
your mother. oh, to have such skills. i've managed
construction since i got out of college, and i couldn't tell
you how to so much as start a skill saw. rock on, woman!

okus - of all the places in the usa to migrate to, how'd you decide
on Texas?!? such a bold move, i admire your hutzpah! my SIL
married a Brit 25 years ago and has lived in Bath ever since.
dh has been over a few times and he always comes back
saying we just have to move over there. i'm anxious to visit
the UK to see for myself what inspires him so.

defoe - hereinafter being known as "dig" is just great with me :)

blooms - driving 100 miles to home depot took me aback when i
first read it ... then it clicked that you live in moab! makes
perfect sense, now. we were in moab for a couple days
during a completely crazy cross-country trip we took with
our 4 yr old and 9 mo old. beauuuuuuutiful place, moab is.
i wonder how different it is to garden there. one thing for
sure, every garden in moab has a gorgeous backdrop.

aria - nothing wrong with grapes for dinner. thanks for cheering my
writing habit on, though it may make the other gob's cringe lol.

last night's datura bloom is starting its downward spiral there outside my kitchen window ... which only means one thing - the morning's marching on and i've got miles to go before the day is done.

happy tuesday, wonderful people :)

You must visit the UK, Dig, have been there several times, each time I liked it better and better whether it is Scotland, England or Wales.
