Coffee and...Part 26...! :-D
Sorry folks...this has been a busy week for me. I'll sum it up with three sets of circumstances, and leave it at that.
1) Son #1 - Social services and a kid that just won't take "no" for an answer.
2) Son #2 - D.O.T / DUI / LOUSY State that tends to lose records when it makes *them* money!
3) TORNADOS! The *real* kind! (and no, thank God, we weren't touched...a "little one" hit two blocks away.)
My thoughts and prayers are with the people of the Stoughton WI area after a HUGE super cell 'bopped' across the southern parts of the State last evening.
And I think there was a FULL moon last night...any corelation? Yep! It *was* a "Bad Moon Rinsing" kind of day.
Good news? Well...I got my hosta order from Hosta Farm and it's beyond *fantastic!*
Later...
Hope everyone is NOT having the same kind of day I had yesterday.
;-)
~julie~
In a funk here - DH insists on watching 2 hrs of wrestling on Thurs evening, so I go to bed. It was light out and I was in bed by 8:30pm - of course woke up at 12:57am (looked at the clock to make sure I wasn't seeing things) Honestly, I was awake the rest of the night. I hate this! I need to plan on doing something on Thurs evenings - I get so bored and absolutely refuse to watch that slime on TV. He watches it on Mon and Thurs, and the rest of the evenings I can watch what I want (although he controls the remote!!) so I really can't insist on no wrestling.
Cloudy, sunny, now back to cloudy. It is almost so dark that I need to turn on a light and it is not even 10am! Thinking about running into town - and of course if I do , I will spend $$. Trying to not give in to the urge... But I do need some roundup badly...
Darius- ouch! Breaking off a tooth sounds painful. What do you do now? Crown, root canal, dentures?? Going to the dentist is my absolutely worse fear. I would rather have a zillion of the female exams. I always freak out and never go with a healthy dose of xanax.
DIL is having a garage sale today. I should take over several boxes of books that I don't want, but she never asked me if I had anything, so perhaps she doesn't want my stuff. She's the one who I try to be pleasant because she is so tempermental.
Grr, I did a stupid thing. Did a load of laundry and forgot to get it in the dryer for two days. I couldn't figure out what was stinking in my laundry room - well I found it. Then, since I had a load more of dirty stuff, I added that to the load and redid the whole thing. When I went to put it in the dryer, it was all wound up in knots - couldn't figure out why. Well, after drying it and putting everything away, I looked at the washer and I had the water level set at it's lowest level. I am sure the clothes are still full of soap. The washclothes felt funny when I was folding them, but I thought it was just the humidity. I can't remember what all was in the load - oh well!!
My arm is so so painful again. I iced it three times yesterday and it actually seemed to make it worse. It throbbed all last night.
Julie what is a DOT? Never heard of that one. Congrads on the hosta. I would like to get some more, but I have NO empty space left. In fact my hosta bed is way overcrowded and needs to be thinned, but I don't know where to go with them - can't throw them out ya know.
Gotta go - I set the timer for 20 min and now I need to clean for awhile
DOT is Dept. of Transportation... And, sounds like you need to get a small tv for your bedroom. My 13" tv was under $90.
Sarv, I don't know what to do about my tooth. Actually it's teeth, since I broke off another one some time back on the other side. The dentist I just saw said the roots are all fractured and would not hold a crown. The ones between the two broken ones are all fractured too. I guess I'll have to have them pulled and a partial when I can rob a bank, or have them put me to sleep and pull them all and get an upper denture.
Sarv, we have solved our TV problem quite nicely. DW watches sports, Oprah etc while I watch TLC, Public TV, Discovery channel etc.My hearing is so bad I use headphones to keep from bothering the neighbors with the volume. She has her TV in the Living room and I have mine in the spare bedroom/TV/computer/library/den/catch-all room. It works for us. Sorry about your arm. Naproxin helps with my aches and pains, have you tried it?
Darius, good grief! you have been set upon by so many untenable situations, and now a broken tooth! Dentists are my least favorite visits, but the alternatives are worse. Hope they can do something about it without a lot of pain and suffering.
There's a "Dog Fest" in Stanwood this weekend. Frisbe contest, fun and games, and testing for the 'Canine Good Citizen' certification. I'd like to enter Tinker and see how she does around a throng of people. It isn't anything like the CD trials but just shows your dog behaves well and is obedient. There's also the annual Arts and Crafts gathering at the Everett Marina this weekend too so it will be a busy couple of days. Should take some time today to look for a used refrigerator. The 35 year old beer and pop garage frige doesn't get below 50° now. Being the old freon type I guess I'll have to pay to have it hauled off. I do miss not having a nice cold beverage during the summer. Wish everyone had our wonderful weather. Not too hot, not too cold, only occasional rain, just right. Too bad it is so short lived.
Hi all GOBs,
M5, Yes I got an email from your daughter. Nice of her to bother. I shall write back and maybe we will meet at the National if she is going. Sorry I may not have responded to you before - I thought you were talking to someone else, I'm Carol (not Molly) LOL
Balvenie have fun at your Fun Show - they are great. We spent 3 months in WA in 2003, I couldn't cope with the rain though - might as well be in England!! and all the trees had me feeling cloistrophobic (?).
The scenery is very spectacular though, lovely photograph.
Darius that tooth sounds painful. DH broke one of his at the gum line too, but at least it was root canal filled so there is no exposed nerve. I keep nagging him to get it sorted out - problems with your teeth can affect the health of your whole body. He is afraid of both dentists and the expense, being on a fixed income as we are, but health comes first.
Julie kids never stop being a worry and I don't think that will ever change!! How old are your sons? Its my girls that are causing me angst at the moment and they are in their late 30s, eldest will be 40 next year. Gosh that makes me feel OLD :>)))))
Sarv that arm sounds like the pits. I hope it sorts out soon, nagging pain is depressing and bad for the temper too if I'm anything to go by. We have a small TV too - I have it on a small wheeled cart so I can take it with me wherever I am when DS & DH have the football on all Sunday afternoon. DS comes here because wife and kids don't want their TV tied up with football!! So I retreat, I can only get the local channels but its better than watching grown men, dressed in armour, who can't keep going for more than five minutes without a "time out" (or rest as i call it!!). I shall probably now get stoned by everyone so will retreat to my bunker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL
More on the TV saga. We have a 51 in huge sucker in our family room. That's where we are all the time. I have a 20 some inch in MY bedroom, but the minute I lay on the bed, I fall asleep. (we've had separate bedrooms for years.. LOL) I just need to find something to do at night that will keep me up. I just like to sit and watch tv with him, but can't stand his choice of programs. We actually have 5 tvs, so that's not a problem!!
Darius - do they have any dental colleges near you? We have a dental clinic in town where they are learning. I've never gone there, but have known some that have. Now that I think of it, it was just for the cleaning stuff not anything complicated. Darn...
I just looked at the calendar and DIL garage sale is not until next Friday - I apologize for bad mouthing her. She just emailed me and told me she got her new license with her married name on it. Now they just need to change DGS name. It will be a problem as DS was NOT put on the birth certificate - it was left blank. She was in a snit over DS - and now she married him - go figure... She told me that she didn't have anymore time to take off work to go to the court to fix DGS name change (but she is taking a day off work for the garage sale!! - another go figure... LOL)
Time for lunch
Carol, WHY would we stone you? Local channels are better than none, but why don't you have the cable or sattelite line run to your tv?
Although just a housemate (and thankfully not a husband)... my last housemate dominated the TV while I sat at the computer, our backs to each other in that large room. Most of the year I would listen in, esp. if it was PBS, Discover channel or old movies. But she was addicted to football and bet on all the games with her father.
It was football season that made me get a 13" tv for my bedroom 3 years ago!
Now my computer space is near the foot of my bed (it's a big room) and the tv is on a small table between the two spaces. I can turn it to watch from my computer chair, or back to facing the bed and watch from there. The reality is that I seldom watch TV. We could be in a national disaster and I wouldn't know about it unless someone posted it on DG, LOL.
Rude remarks about American Football in this household are likely to get you lynched!!
Carol
Carol, I just don't see the point of all those grown men in padded suits knocking each other down.
Hey GOB's Just back from the grocery. It's getting worse all the time. Today I shopped for me, my mom and mother in law. Talk about confusing, when I get home, almost have to get in every bag to see who it belongs to!!.
Had another chiropractor visit this morning, my neck and back feel better. Although the pain has moved down to my side and hip. Another appointment on Monday.
Last night went with DH fishing at a friend's lake. Fish were not biting, so I decided to walk next door, to another friends, to see her gardens. She has day lilies and wanted to see if she had any late bloming ones. I had my Parson Jack Russell and the Rat Terrier with me, and they were walking with me. However, all of a sudden they turned in the oposite direction and started running and barking. Well they were headed in the direction where DH was fishing, so I just proceeded to next door. I visited with friends, for about 30 minutes and then headed back to the lake. When I got back, there were 2 other people and 2 labs at the other end of the lake. DH told me that those people had walked about half way down to where he was, and our dogs met them, as they are friendly. DH said that evidently people didn't see him, as they scooped up my Jack Russell and headed the other direction. He took off running after them, and they threw the dog down and ran. He rescued Bruno, and discovered that he was minus his collar, rabies tag, dog license and identification. He had just put the dogs in the truck to keep them safe when I showed up. I wanted to go down there and confront them, but DH talked me out of it. This is the second time that someone has tried to steal my Jack Russell. They are not common in this area and everybody wants one. So now I am trying to find out about replacement tags, etc. Got a new collar and Identification tag today.
Okus, I know what you mean about football, or for that matter any other sport. DH watches anything in sports Isn't it ridiculous that grown men, making millions of dollars will dress in that padding & uniforms to try to kill one another? And the baseball players who have to adjust appendages while on National TV, and the wrestlers and boxers who are equally nasuating. DH has even started watching poker, for heaven's sake. Just give me a good book any day!!, The only thing I watch is the news type programs, and I confess, got hooked on Desparate Housewives last year!!
|Julie, sorry about your trials, we all have been there. Sarv, hope your arm gets better. Darius, egads, a broken tooth. Is it hurting? Robert that Dog Fest sounds like fun. We just had an almost new fridge given to us by some friends. They buy condos, redecorate them and resell them. They almost always replace the appliances, and sell the used ones. Wish you were close enough, I would scavenge one for you!!
Got to go as DGD is coming this afternoon, and I need to get something started for supper.
Now I have poison ivy. Yesterday was a "barren" day according to Farmer's Almanac and I decided to don disposable gloves and pull up poison ivy in my beds. Somewhere I wasn't careful about walking and now have poison ivy on my legs.
Sigh. I really do wonder WHY I have all these challenges! They are NOT making be a better person, LOL.
Aww geeeez Okus, I'm sorry about scrambling names, my only excuse is... it was really early and I hadnt had my caffeine jolt yet. Will that work? Again, I apologize.
Sarv, if you haven't tried Naproxen, you might want to give it a test run.. since it's available over the counter now, and not costly you might be pleased with the relief it gives. It works exceptionally well for me.
I'm a football avoider too, anything but. It bores me silly. I don't mind hearing the end result, but to sit through that mind numbing thumping is just pointless to me. We have tv sets in every room except the bathrooms, so it's not hard to find something else to watch or do. DH usually holes up in the den with his computer and tv and doesn't try to convince me that it's fun to watch.
Darius I feel for you. I went through so much misery with my upper teeth, I've done it all, root canals, oral surgery, had nothing but problem after problem and a low grade infection almost constantly. I have absolutely no regrets about finally telling my dentist that I wanted them GONE!
If I had the cash I've poured into this mouth, I could buy a new car. Told my son the same thing, when his dentist told him how much it would cost him to have his much needed work done, with no guarantee as to how long the results would last. Now, since the uppers are gone, my hygienist is thrilled with how well the lowers are doing in terms of gum health, etc. Can't bite an apple but I can eat corn on the cob.
Stayed cloudy and comfortable until we got done with golf, now it's heating up fast. More boomers and rain tonight. Shared a motorized cart with an older than me lady subbing for one of our regulars. After the third time she parked about 30 yards away from my ball, I told her the reason I use a cart is because I have problem ankles and knees. It didn't help, I might just as well have walked the entire course. And she was s l o w. Those carts don't go fast even if you floor them, but she was just creeping along, and nothing aggravates the golfers behind you more than you not making a visible effort to speed up the game. Oh well, chances are I won't golf with her again.
Dcat, everytime I shopped with/for my mother, I always ended up with something of hers that I didn't want or vice versa. She always insisted we didn't have to keep our stuff in separate bags and often dropped a bag of lettuce or a dozen eggs on top in one of my bags, or went home with my baking potatos in the bottom of one of hers.
I guess people have different priorities..i.e. day off for rummage but not for name updating...lol. My DH's brother and his wife are always complaining about money but they trade their cars in every year, and take a big vacation to Hawaii or somewhere, and have a pool and a big boat. Go figure. LOL when my BIL was here he ended up staying at their place for one night and complained to DH that he didn't like to stay there because they complained too much. This from the champion of complainers in his family, all he does is go on and on about his problems which are mostly caused by him outsmarting himself.
Takes all kinds, aina???
I hear a short nap calling my name.............!!
Just got back from shopping and YES I did spend $$. I had a 30% off coupon and two $10 free cards. So I think I did well. Bill was 97 and I only had to pay 51 - my kinda day!! I got new tennie shoes, three towels, one sweater for winter and a fall candle~~ Yahoo!! Darn, I just remembered I had a sweater that I wanted and didn't get it. Shoot with gas so high, I don't think I will boogie in to get it.
Folks showed up for a haircut - unannounced. Gosh I hate that. My house was not in order and I was sitting on my duff on the computer. My mom told me I needed to make my bed and clean off the patio. I gave her THE look . If she wasn't 81, I'd tell her to "go at it herself" My rule is if the bed isn't made by noon- I don't make it. I just shut the door... LOL
DH is home and in a good mood. Probably because it is Friday~no work for a couple of days. He's out in the barn (his glory area) making something for our ancient truck camper. Oldest DS wants to borrow it - it is a total dusty mess and I refuse to clean it - if they want to borrow it = they can clean.
The only sport I like to watch on tv is ice skating - is that a sport? I am glued to the olympics when they are on tho. DH doesn't like any sport other than that ridiculous wrestling. Ours sons are sports fanatics - they watch it all. I don't know where they got it from - certainly not from us!!
Well, I have coupons for Taco Bell - and they are sounding good. Wonder if DH will go - he hates to go out and would rather cook himself - but then I gotta do the dishes... yuck...
Bonnie,
For your doggie, please consider a micro chip. If Russells are so sought after by thieves, certainly a microchip could help you to recover your baby. I had some put into my parrots. Luckily I have never had to resort to using them.
Darius, things are gonna get better. I know we all each have different sets of problems, but they are problems, just the same, no less important to each of us. But this week I shall be ever the optimist.......Things will get better, we just have to focus on that.
Geesh, I was gone to B'fly World today with some DG'ers and just got home. Looks like I am really behind.
Oh yeah, now I remember. SARV, how about Internet Interactive Card or Board games. It appears that you have set yourself "limits" that you spend on the computer. Well I ask you, does DH set limits on his time in front of the tube watching sports? I know we don't want to deprive our loved ones their time doing the things they like to do, but that kind of leaves us sitting around waiting. Yep and there ain't nothing on TV on Thursday night, hasn't been for years and I have satellite.
So I play spades with other people on the net. I have a free site and can spend unlimited time there. And, I don't have much of a life but I like things just fine that way for now. Just an idea. If you are interested dmail me and I'll link that site to you. Maybe we could play some spades or cribbage.
M5 you're so cute, you did that before. I was trying to figure out what you were referring to as well.
My X wouldn't let me have a tv in the bedroom all the time we were together. When I moved over here it was the first thing I did, got a satellite receiver for the living room AND the bedroom. My problem with that and someday I'll give in to myself and start turning it off to read a book. I fall asleep with the tv on, an hour later the noise wakes me up. I shut it off, lay there wide awake, turn it back on, fall asleep etc etc etc. Go ahead and laugh heehee.
We had a great visit at Butterfly World today and a very nice lunch afterwards. Lunch at 3:00. Well that will be my dinner too. I'm still full as a tick. I went fully armed with a small water jug, paper towels, plastic cups and snips. I was going to get some cuttings to bring home. Well my heart generally sets me right. I drank the water, used the paper towels to wipe the sweat from my brow, took a few seeds and BOUGHT 3 Buddleia's and a passiflora.
Well, I guess I do have a bit of a life.
Molly
:^)))
DRATS!! Put a nice loaf of banana bread in the oven at 350° for 50 minutes expecting to find a delectable morsel when the times up. Hate to sit and watch the oven for an hour so I went out and watered a couple pots, but first, then later, then after that it was 2 1/2 hours further down the road. My how time flies when you're having fun. After I darted in the house and turned the stove off I pulled the little feller out and dumped it on a rack. Dark, but not quite to the flash point. Tasted OK, a little crunchy around the edges, but with the flavor of cooked bananas. The upside of my senior moment is that now I don't have to bother toasting it. Time to wash up and go out to our favorite Italian place for ricotta and spinach calzone and a house salad. We split a single order because they are so big, (or are we eating less ?) Seems like more than a couple of us have been having 'one of those days'.

Molly, ( and I do mean Molly) lol, do you play on Pogo? I play backgammon there a lot. My screen name there is Kisssofdeath_ and also UBLoozin_ so if that's where you go, you can look for me. I think the graphics are excellent. I'm hopeless at cards, never learned much in the way of card games except solitaire, but I love backgammon. DH and I used to play back in the dark ages when we actually spent time face to face...lol.
Just wanted to check in and wish everyone a better day tomorrow!
Thanks Molly and Happy, I have heard of the chips, and I have decided that I need to do that for both of us. If I lose my baby, someone would just have to shoot me!! In this area they are highly sought after. DH brother has raised 3 litters in the last year and 1/2 and has had them stolen right out of the kennel. Has lost 3 that way. Molly I would really like to bring Bruno to the RU, but he is not a good traveler, and beside I worry about him being stolen. So will leave him home with DH. He misses me so much, and just loves on me even when I have been gone 30 minutes!! Good thing, I always have someone who is happy to see me|!|!
Went out and watered everything tonight. We have had a little rain, but not enough to let the plants go for 2 days in a row.
Sarv you did really good shopping!! I like bargains like that.
Robert, just call that bread a new recipe, Banana Crunch Bread!!
Happy, football players, tight ends, spandex pants, protective gear, are you speaking of "packages", show offs are all they are. LOL
Well going to take a shower, tomorrow is predicted to be 95 with a heat index of 105, and the idiots who reside in this house are going to the Ky. State Fair!! I will check back later tonight, and then if I survive, please somebody have something nice and cool on the counter in the morning.
M5,
I have played spades on pogo before but don't care to play with computers and limited chat.
Backgammon, I haven't played that since I danced disco, forgotten both. lol I wouldn't mind playing games with people I "Know" Maybe I'll go over there and get into a beginners hand and learn again
Would be fun!!!
Molly
Hi all,
Darius, you actually make me feel extremely lucky in comparison! It's getting so I'm afraid to read the latest post from you. I don't know if it will work for you, but when I get poison ivy rash starting, I grab my trusty tube of Clearasil (yup, the anti-pimple stuff, white "vanishing formula"). I've found that it helps dry the nasties up much faster than Calomine or any of that other stuff and even helps with the itching, at least for a while. I've never used it over extensive areas, just dabbed it on the initial little patches. Also, in cas you hadn't heard of this, if you have Jewel Weed growing around your area and you even suspect that you might have come in contact with poison ivy, break the stems of the weed and spread the sap over the affected area. It will keep you from breaking out with the rash.
I can empathize about the tooth as well. Mine were so lousy that I had them all yanked out when I was in my twenties. The dentist tried to talk me out of it and promised I'd be sorry, but I never have been.
Guess I lucked out on the whole TV sports bit. The only person I know who hates sports more than I do is my husband. He's the one cussing out the sports program that's gone into overtime, thus intruding on some other program that he does want to watch.
SARV, the timer sounds like a good idea! I've got a million and a half things that I should be doing and lately my husband has been minding my store on Wednesdays since he's currently unemployed, so that I can have some extra time at home to make candles, take care of the garden, catch up on the jewelry repairs I should have had finished a month ago, etc., etc. Somehow or other I seem to end up in front of this computer for half the day, on this forum or one of the gift basket forums or playing "just one more game" of solitaire. It's so easy to rationalize it. I don't really get that much time off to just goof around, but this isn't helping with the backlog of stuff that actually does need doing!
Okay, enough of that. Goodnight to everyone and I hope tomorrow is much better for us all.
McCool, welcome to our small "chat" room! You are too funny about hesitating to read my posts... and YES, I still wonder WHY God keeps putting all these encounters before me. I got the poison ivy WHILE I was pulling up jewel weed, LOL. I know how to use it for poison ivy, and do so. Actually, I also find Bach's Rescue Remedy creme works well, too.
If any of y'all are interested, there's lots of good information about house-cleaning 15 minutes at a tiime on this thread, and the preceeding one, listed in the first post. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/538441/
i've been reading your "coffee and ..." threads for a few weeks now, and i'm tired of feeling like a voyeur. i feel like i've gotten to know you all and it's time you know i'm here :) i have laughed and cried with you. and i look forward to catching up with my morning coffee (which can sometimes be two pots!) ...
so, here i am and let me introduce myself. my name is marsha, i'm a maryland/washington dc native; my dh retired from the dc fire department in '95 and we moved to nc the same year. we moved to this university town so i could attend law school, but i chickened out at the last minute - the 80+ hours of class and studying per week just wasn't realistic with two young kids. you only get one shot at your offspring, and so i declined the law school dream. let's just say i postponed the dream - if i wait till i'm 55 (3 more years) i can attend almost for free :) anyway, i've got a great dh who supports whatever i do, and has been the best gardening partner for 28 years of marriage. he contributes all the upper body strength i've ever needed, and has laid miles of stone walls and paths over the years.
i've got two great kids - as dh says "great, so far" - a daughter almost 23 who goes to college in new york city - she'll graduate in dec '05 thank God! tuition has been a massive struggle, not to mention the costs of just keeping her alive in a very very expensive city. my gardening budget has been ZERO for several years. then, there's the grey hair i've acquired from worrying about her up there - she can see what was the world trade center from her apartment, and she has that youthful trademark of fearing nothing. but, she has inherited the love of all living things, and especially the love of gardening - she's got a beautiful potted veggie and flower garden on her little asphalt rooftop. she calls it her little patch of home. my son just graduated from high school in june, and has enlisted in the Marine Corps. my dear sweet funny wonderful boy will be boarding the bus to parris island soon. i spent the last year begging him not to do this, as has everyone who knows and loves him. it kills me that his main motivation for enlisting is to receive the college benefits - he says he doesn't want us to have to struggle with tuition for him the way we have with his sister. this breaks my heart, because i would scrub floors or work at mcdonald's if i had to, to keep him here and safely in school. he has signed up for the infantry, and i know he'll end up in iraq. this will turn my hair completely white. send your protective karma his way.
gardening is my passion and has become my therapy for stress and worry. i'm in the 2nd yard i've had to start from scratch. it has taken ten years to get to the point where i don't shudder with horror when i look out my windows. i actually smile now when i look out there :)
i love the year-round gardening aspect of living in nc. even if i do have to buy OFF repellant by the case. i resigned from my job last december, a job i'd had for a long time. i managed the construction for a non-profit affordable housing group (not habitat) ... it was difficult and intense and i burned out after many years of it. so, i decided to unburden myself of it all, even if it wasn't a wise financial move. the benefit is that i've gotten to spend so much more time with my son during his last months at home. and my yard is showing the results of the time i've been able to devote to it this spring & summer.
so, there. i've shared a bit of myself, as you guys have done with all who enjoy your threads as much as i do. i look forward to coffee with y'all.
marsha
McCool - welcome to the group!! Drop in anytime and tell us what's happening in your life...
Went to Pogo and it looks like it is a 'paying' place. Am I right?? Remember I am computer challenged too!!
Darius - how's the itchies going. You sure have enough oh your plate right now. DH said to use nail polish remover- just dab it on. He is into using things around the house!! What in the world is a "barren" day? Never heard that time.
We never went to Taco Bell last night.... DH and son worked on fixing the truck camper. We had chicken strips from a box at 9:30pm - they tasted good - I was SO hungry. You'd think I'd get off my duff and make something, but I have absolutely no desire to cook. I do get better in cooler weather!
It is supposed to rain all day today - we need it, but drat, I hate it when it happens on a weekend. We didn't get the lawn mowed yesterday, so by Monday it will be a hay field. Looks really ratty out there now.
M5- Naproxen - hmmm think it would better than Relafen - that's what the doc prescribed for me, but the side effects aren't good. Sometimes I think it is working, other days not.
Defo - what kinda slime steals anothers dog??? I can never understand that. If your kids are starving - steal a loaf of bread - that I can understand, but a pet?? sick
I've been out snapping close up pics of some of my flowers. My dahlias are gorgeous now and the morning glories are a close second. After I go de-poop DS liter boxes, I may just run into Sams and develop them and get some high priced gas!
I need to go put some 'green up' stuff on my plants - take care everyone!!
diggingit/Marsha... Welcome to GOB's ...Glorious Old Broads... plus our Robert (Balvenie) who seems to be the only DG man who is comfortable hangin' out with us!
Must be very hard on you that your son has chosen the Infantry... so many end up being fodder, but there's always Hope that we'll get out of Iraq sometime soon. Parris Island is no picnic either. Must be a strong lad!
What is your daughter studying? New York is such a vital city, so much to see and do! I have taken the train up many times when I lived in Baltimore and Annapolis, but the city overwhelms me.
Sarv, the itchies are driving me nuts! ... and a "barren" day is from planting by the moon. Certain moon signs are perfect for growing great crops/plants, and others are so barren that anything planted then will fail. So, a barren sign is perfect to pull weeds and get rid of stuff you want eliminated.
I use a calendar I get from http://www.gardeningbythemoon.com/ and it's marked for every day of the year. They make 3 editions, one for a short growing season (north), one for a medium growing season, and one for a long growing season like the south, and Calif.
Welcome newcomers, get used to being called GOBs, but you probably already know that. If you've been lurking, you probably know pretty much about us by now.
We're on our second pot of coffee this morning, gray skies, but temp is a nice 71. I'm going out to annihilate weeds shortly and hope the mosquitos don't find me 'cuz I don't wanna smell like Off all day.
Diggingit, my GS recently got out of the navy and is signing up for classes and his monthly stipend. Got a gov't form letter saying they are backed up with applications and he is not approved or disapproved, just in a holding pattern. He did spend some time in the middle East but not in a combat zone, so we were glad he chose the Navy for his four year stint. I would have been a basket case if he had chosen Marines or Army, and they sent him to Iraq.
Sarv, you can play free on Pogo. They do have "special" bonuses for people who join "the club" but I did that for a year and never won a cent, so now I play on the cheap. All you get for membership is the ability to win badges, and double jackpots, and since I didn't ever win anything I thought it was money wasted. Play for free. All you have to deal with is 20 second intermissions occasionally, between games. Not a big problem, serves as a coffee/potty/phone break!
Also, when you take your film in ask if they can put it on a disc for you. Then you can go to Kodak.com and get a free software download, put in your disc, and keep your pictures on the computer. AND SHARE THEM WITH US. Ooops, excuse the yelling. lol
Picked up a yummy salad at the deli the other day, it would have been easy enough to do at home but my lazy bone was in charge that morning.......Baby spinach, pignolis, (pine nuts) rotini, parmesan cheese and v/o dressing. Simple but deeeeliscious. I tossed on some extra toasted pine nuts because they were kinda stingy with them. Maybe next time I'll do it all, myself....
OK weeds, watch out, here I come.
Morning GOBs,
Welcome to our new folk, diggingit and Marsha, I brought some warm cinnamon bread this morning to go with the coffee. Dig in, (no pun intended).
I'm not sure how I would cope if one of my 'babies' :>))) was in a war zone. I fret enough about them as it is. DS tells me its his turn to worry about me, but I'm not ready for that! They may be grown but they are still babies to me. I wonder when you get to feel comfortable with the change in roles, if ever?
M5 you didn't need to appologise!! We all make mistakes and I respond to a vast array of names anyway. Yours wasn't rude unlike some of them!! DS has been known to call me Grumpy Gerriatric and thats one of the polite ones - I get my own back there by calling him 'my baby', which he is, but at 35 he says its embarrassing when he is trying to impress the boss. HE he he ;>))))))))
Darius are you taking Benadryl tablets for that itch? I was surprised, when DH had the hives all over, that the ER doc suggested he kept taking that as well as the RX steroid stuff. Said it was the best, but to take two at a time not one.
It has been so hot and humid here this last week I'm having trouble getting out to do the garden and the weeds seem to know!! Temp has been high 90s with 70-80% humidity. I shall have to get to it soon or there will be nothing but weeds. I think the mulch has to be redone, its either washed awy in the rain or worked into the soil, because it was 2" thick but it isn't now!
Carol
One day I'll learn control the keyboard on this machine, I swear it types letters into words that I didn't put there!!

Carol, diggingit and Marsha are one and the same...
Cinnamon bread smells delish, Thanks!
And, yes I am taking benadryl... helps some. I'll pass on any steroids. I had some prednisone when they first diagnosed COPD, don't like it. Plus, prednisone tends to make you puffy.
In for lunch - DH made tuna fish sandwiches - good stuff!! I passed on the potato chips (patting myself on the back!) BUT there is some ice cream in the freezer that keeps calling to me.
Dig - welcome. Nice to hear about your family. I vacationed in NYC years ago - loved it. Exciting, fast, wonderfully glamorous!! Ate lunch next to Kitty Karlile (sp) and Gary Moore. Sat behind Gene Shallit at a play. Does that date me LOL~
My newphew is in the Air Force. He volunteered to go to Kuwait - we couldn't believe it! He came back safely - thank goodness. Never saw any real bad action -just heard a bunch of shooting. DId have their latreens blow up one day - that was the only 'fire' stuff they saw - thank goodness. Good thing we have a compuer and email as I was able to 'talk' to him daily. We sent care (food) pkgs to him every three weeks and included enough junk (all he wanted was junk food) for several of his buddies.
Rain has stopped, but it is cloudy and overcast and sticky. Supposed to get really cold -high in the 60's by Monday. What a change.
Well, I still need to do the de-pooping stuff, so I better go.
Robert, laughed at your apt description of your bread -"Dark, but not quite to the flash point." LOL and I agree while still warm from the oven tastes just fine... later it begins to be more like charcoal, sound like an expert on it don't I?
Here's another one you can try if you like.- put a bowl of yeast bread dough in the oven to rise, the pilot light provides just the right amount of warmth. Then after a few outdoor chores and some of those but firsts, come inside and decide to make meatloaf. Turn on the oven, mix up the meat loaf while the oven warms to 350* NOW open the door.
you will find the dough has risen to the roof of the oven and has pretty well baked itself fast.
Of course this was back when I actually used the oven for something more than pan storage. LOL ~Blooms
Funny story, Blooms! I bet it was a sight to see, LOL.
I "retired." The quotation marks are because I'm still going in to work. My boss didn't want to quit completely yet. So I go in an hour later and dropped Wednesdays. Next I will drop Mondays. But it makes a huge difference in how I feel and what I can do with these abbreviated hours.
Going to the Lily Pad in Cashiers and buy some koi and shebunkin for my pond on my 1st Social Security Check!! whooo-hooo!
(Anybody know how much I can make in a year and not lose any Social Security money?)
Welcome diggingit, glad to have you aboard. We get crazy, silly, serious, and brainy, just depends on the day.
Mollly, went back and read my thread last night, concerning my Jack Russell, and I did not intend to imply that I won't bring him to the RU because I think someone there will steal him!! Just that sometimes have to leave him in the car at rest stops etc.
Sarv, some people around here don't have the money to buy them a pedigreed pet, so they just go find what they want and steal it.
Darius, hope that poison ivy heals real fast. DGD had it, and the thing that cleared hers up was the chlorine in the swimming pool. Her mother also put clorox on it, and it did have a drying effect. She is so allergic to it, she can just be in the same area where it is and catch it from the wind.
Well survived the fair. It was sooooooo hot and humid. We were gone about 6 hours, and believe you me, it was all I wanted of it. Glad it only happens once a year. Now the fairs are over, and we can get on with a sane life.
Well, going to rest, then fix something to eat. Will check in later.
Popping in again - you will never believe what I just did - DH and I mowed the lawn (he on the huge John Deere, me on the little one) and I was HOT, so I came inside, grabbed the container of mint choco chip ice cream and finished the whole thing off!!
Paid some bills - how can I charge so much in one month is beyond me. I am always so surprised. I always look the bill over real good thinking that someone else must have used my card!!
Went and de-pooped the DS's kitty stuff - be glad when they get back from vacation. When I was leaving, I had to walk by his work bench and glanced at it. There was a pair of scissors that were mine, my 30 sun tan lotion, and a huge pair of wire cutters of DH (he always labels his tools with his initials) I wonder what else he has of ours.... Oh, there's more. I found out he has our $800 dollar speakers (substituted his cheap - o ones for ours), snow blower and air compressor. The latter two he is trying out, but has had them for three years. If he wasn't such a darn nice kid, I would be really ticked at him.
Found some proliferations on my DL. They are the ugly orangish ones and I really don't like them, but may just stick a few of them in the ground and see what happens. Why can't this happen on the ones I love???
Left another load of laundry in the washer (PU) That's the second time in a week that I've done that. Mind is a going I think!!

Sarv, If you like card games, try www.uproar.com Well they have card games, board games and word games. Just click in as a guest and decide if you like them or not. Even backgammon M5.
Just be sure you click the little "x" to block pop up advertising. One of the draw backs of free games is the advertising. Ya gotta allow for that, some one has to pay so you can have some fun. :^)))
Bonnie, actually I didn't even think about the issues of bringing your pup to the roundup, although that would not be a problem. I was only thinking of your pup. the chip is not exactly like a lo-jack, but works for identification purposes.
Marsha, welcome to Dave's and to Gobs. You are a very perceptive lady and articulate. Almost brought me to tears. Although I am not as active here as most, I do get the urge to run my mouth once in a while, and our friends are always here to listen.
Well, it's hot as all getout again. August being the very very worst month of the year, I can hardly wait for it to be over. I find myself holed up in the a/c, when I am home, for the better part of the day. I am getting readdy to get out there very soon.
I have those plants I bought yesterday I need to tend to, fertilize the ground for my fall/winter veggies and take stock of some of the great little trades I received yesterday and recently here on DG.
Sometime this weekend I need to sit down and get my listings put in for all those hibiscus I bought in co-op. They are growing up very nicely and need to get some permanent homes.
Maybe if I make a written list of all these things, I might job do the complete and check thing and not get distracted by computer games and tv.
Oh life is really rough. heehee.
Molly
:^)))
Molly, I'm hoping to weed a small area and put in some mixed salad greens for fall. I even have some seeds in my seed container, but just not sure where the comtainer is... maybe over at my aunt's lake house.
While I was in Boone last week, and staying with LizH and her DH out in Todd, they heard the "chi-chi" which is some critter that makes that kind of noise six weeks before first frost. That would make their first frost Sept. 22.
They are a thousand feet higher that I am here, so maybe a month or so quicker to frost. I'm READY for it to cool off. Hottest summer in the mountains I can ever remember.
Making Shrimp Scampi to serve over angel-hair pasta for dinner. Yum. I absolutely LOVE shrimp but don't allow myself to have them very often because they are so high in chloresterol.
These were in the freezer, bought right off the shrimp boats by the ferry to Ferdinanda Beach near my brother's place in Jax. Froze them there and packed them home frozen and wrapped in newspaper in the cooler.
blech, blech to the shrimp...lol I'm not a fish eater at all. I find that quite funny/ironic/strange... whatever.. because my parents grew up on an island in the North Atlantic, there is a large number of ocean going fish trawlers from the island and fish was a large part of their diet. Then they immigrate to Canada, farm and are MILES from the ocean so us kids didn't grow up eating much fish.
A few nights a year the smelts are 'running' and dad, my uncles, older brothers, etc. would leave late at night and catch bushel baskets full of smelts. They would be cleaning fish when I got up for school and I would stay in my room till the very last minute, hold my nose and rush out the door. That fishy smell just nauseates me. LOL I did like eating them when they were breaded and fried. The only fish I eat is breaded and fried. Isn't that terrible?? Oh, except canned tuna and salmon. picky, picky, picky...
Welcome, Marsha! Glad to have u join the GOBs, although I am only in training - not officially a GOB til Dec. lol
I may have one joining the air force in 2 years. He wants to live overseas - is in the process of getting his Dutch citizenship right now so he can travel and live over there without any visas. Our 21 year old may join too - he did exceptionally well on the test 2 years ago and never went then but still talks about it. I will certainly be nervous and I don't mean to sound preachy, but I firmly believe God has a plan for each of us and freedom is never free.
The 25 year old son has a serious girlfriend and likes his job so doubt he'll move anywhere anytime soon. DD is 28 and has a BF and daughter. I'd love her to move away from him but then I'd lose DGD so that is a double edged sword. They don't listen to their mother at 28 - lol.
sarv - did that with a load of towels not too long ago - left them for 2 days! yuck! I ran them threw again with a douse of bleach and the smell was gone. I'm using sticky notes more and more - wld it work for u to stick one on the lid when u close it? or do u not go by the washer at all on the way to anything else - my laundry room is next to the hall on the way out the side door, the one we always use so I wld see a sticky note anytime I went in or out the door and remember to chck the washer.
darius - enough already! good golly miss molly! Did u read the thread on the tree tea oil for ucky toe nails? I seem to remember some one mentioning a really good remedy for poison ivy ... I hop over there and see if i can find it.... can t find it now. will look later.
cya
Well we're back from the Dogfest. Beautiful day, sunny and warm but not overly hot. The Flyball trials were a gas,The dogs run a straight course jumping 3 hurdles to grab a tennis ball stuck in a hole in a box-like thing, spin in the air and fly back to their owner. The speed is amazing. Size is from Chiwawa (spelling) to Goldens.Border Collies and Terriers seemed to do the best. Not much action on the Agility course unfortunately.Tinker did OK and passed her Canine Good Citizen trials. I think she would do good in Agility, but I can't do the running necessary to get her through the course. Half of the 'charcoal tinted banana bread' has been eaten.I won't be offended if no one else wants to try it. Maybe the next one will be better.
Blooms, I love your method of proofing bread dough.Would try it but my oven doesn't use a pilot light. It went to those piezo whatchamacallet clicking things.
Sarv, had to laugh at "grabbed the container of mint choco chip ice cream and finished the whole thing off".Finishing off a half pint aint nuthin.Since you didn't say how BIG the container was,one would assume a gentle and wise lady, like yourself, would use the utmost discretion and moderation.
Darius, Hope the itches are going away. The shrimp scampi sounds delicious.A plateful with some crusty bread and a bottle of chilled wine will do just fine thank you.
have a good evening everyone,I need a nap!
