Disappearing images

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

In the last couple of nights, when I've posted photos right after 1:00 in the morning, they seem to post with no problems, but they disappear shortly afterward, leaving only a box with a red x. The ones from last night (August 17th, 1:00) reappeared tonight, but tonight's (August 18th, 1:00) now have a red x. How weird is that?

I've noticed missing pictures in some forums, too. Can't think of specific posts at the moment, but I've seen them, too.

It's definitely a time thing, GW, because I had trouble accessing the DG site today between 1:00 and 1:30, and this was 1:00 pm rather than 1:00 am. I had no trouble getting anywhere else during that half-hour, so I don't think it's my computer that's acting up.

If memory serves and nothing has changed recently, the nightly batch processes run around midnight Eastern (11pm Central). Dave can and should correct me if I'm wrong about that. The newsletter delivery used to hit my inbox in the wee hours - 1 or 2 a.m. (Central) but that shouldn't be an issue since the newsletter is hosted online now.

I am sometimes still on and working at 11 to midnight, and when I do, I encounter occasional slowdowns, time-outs and other system "gremlins."

But 1a.m. Pacific would be 4 a.m. Eastern (if I'm doing the math right.) Offhand I don't know of anything that would cause problems at that time - but then again, Dave may have other processes set to run at that time that I live in blissful ignorance of their existence ;o)

Hi, Terry--

1:00 must be the time when my computer and the DG system are both doing something that conflicts, because it doesn't appear to be a universal problem (either that, or no one else is up at that ungodly hour). It does coincide with that other process of days gone by, because I used to get the newsletter an hour earlier, at a couple of minutes after midnight. Now that DST has kicked in, 1:00 is what midnight used to be.

Those slowdowns you experience between 11 and 12 must be from us "WestCoasters" getting busy. It's our "prime time," 8-9, and it's the time I usually start zipping around DG and posting at a serious pace.

I actually do have some pretty heavy jobs that the server is scheduled to run starting at 4:00am Eastern time. Here is a graph of the past 24 hours (starting Aug 21 at 7:11am edt)

Notice the spike at 4:00am. This isn't a significant spike, however, but it is the heaviest event of the day.

It certainly coincides with the time my photos have disappeared. On three occasions, I posted them, they looked fine, and then they were replaced with boxes with little red x's in them. A day later, they reappeared and never disappeared again. All three were posted on different days, but always shortly after 1:00 in the morning here.

Well, I'll just avoid posting pictures during that half-hour. It's never happened at any other time.

Thanks, Dave.
