Kell, I have that one, down here it gets about 10ft tall and wide! I grew one in TN in the greenhouse that I got from Kyle as a rooted cutting. I grew it as a standard, took up less room but it was still about 5 ft tall. I just love the flowers.
Kyle, it keeps getting a bit chlorotic on new growth, does that mean not enough nitrogen?
Does anyone have this one blooming in their house?
Oh be still my heart. Tom will have a fit. A 10 ft tall tree in my dining room. LOL You know Susie that standards just turn me on. LOL LOL
Kell, at $3 a piece, I was SOOOOO tempted to buy a bunch of them. But I didn't!!! Exotic Hibiscus runs some good specials at off times of the year. Next time I notice one, I'll be sure and post notice of it here on DG.
Y'all need to send some good vibes my way. I have tons of seedpods on some of my better tropical hibiscus. Last year, all my pods fell off before the seeds matured (I even tried caging them). If these pods mature, I would have seeds to share.
I sure will send the best vibes. I notice I have some on one of my fancy hibiscus too. Are they self pollinating or do they mix and match on their own??
Now this may be fun to grow out new varieties. Do you know how long from seed to flower? They sure are a lot smaller than brugs! LOL.
Kell, They are not self pollinating and they usually bloom within 6 to 18 months. I agree with you that the thought of growing out seeds on good hybrids would be fun!!
Do these fancy tropicals come true from seed?? I know the hardy varieties do since I have grown some from seed, however the tropicals as you said seem to have trouble either developing or maturing seed?? and may well not (as hybrids) come true from seed?? Bonnie
Tropical Hibiscus seeds will produce a hybrid of the parent plants - and not a duplicate of the mother plant.
Bonnie, I believe folks in true tropical climates have an easier time of getting seed to mature from Trop. Hibiscus.
Kell, they usually mature within 4-6 weeks. By the way, take off (carefully) the Calyx to prevent moisture from pooling around the seedpod (and rotting it). I usually use scissors to trim it down.
