I just bought it and think I will keep it inside as a houseplant if it will bloom for me.
I took this pic yesterday at the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers.
Does anyone have this one blooming in their house?
Does yours have white on it Kyle, or is that the way the light is hitting it? Sure is a pretty picture you have there.
Eclipse If the photo is of the one you have at work and it will grow outside in Winter in upstate SC (zone 7/8) I would LOVE to get my hands on seed for this!!! Or rooted cuttings??? LMK!! Bonnie
It is so pretty!! Did you get yours from Mel too? I just can't wait till I get a flower.
Wow!!!!!!!!!!! these are so pretty, never seen before. Thanks for sharing with us.
Kaleem
so..what is this called?
This one is Hibiscus schizopetalus, also called "Chinese Lantern".
I got this one from Exotic Hibiscus (before I met Mel!!). While I love the big showy tropical hibs, I really like this one and the El Capitolios. So many hibiscus......so little room to overwinter them!!!!
tyvm, I want one too now (of course)
I haven't figured out my winterover scheme yet, but I am thinking of sacrificing the kitchen, hahaha. Rachel
Hey, Kitchen counters are GREAT for growing plants. Just slap a few florescent lights underneath the cabinets! Ask me how I know!!!!
lol that sounds great, I am really hoping to get my shed cleaned out. It is 22X18 and has electric and all. We filled it up when we moved here (3 years ago *blush*). I am ashamed to say I don;t know what has to go dormant and what should be warm. I am in the process of writing down all of my plants and looking up care for each and making a binder. I am so new and it is all overwhelming.
Ah Rachel, just take it one day at a time. You will be amazed at the amount of information you can pick up in just a few growing seasons. And even the most experienced of gardeners has to ask questions and look up things.
Kell I just think its the lighting,
Kyle, I was going to beg for it. Looks like a Christmas ornament like that, white and red. Great picture!!
Rachel, sounds like you are having fun!! You must have bought lots of new plants. It is a great love, you will have lots of fun for years gardening. I have been doing it for most of my life and I am still learning and still overwhelmed with what I get myself into. In the end it always works out.
I was looking at the Plumeria forum this morning. You should see how they overwinter those. Made me feel so much better. They just stick them in closets all winter with not even soil on the roots. Where there is a will, there is a way.
Nathalyn, I will have to go check out Exotic Hibiscus, I already love that name. LOL TROUBLE!
Kell, there are two different hibiscus sites called Exotic Hibiscus (one is hyphenated). This is the one that I have ordered from several times. http://www.exotichibiscus.com/catalog_process.cfm?cid=15#902
I see they have just added some new varieties!!
I haven't ordered from Dupont (yet), but I go there and drool on a regular basis:
http://www.dupontnursery.com/ProductCategory.aspx?pcid=6
I shouldn't have looked. I refuse to buy one more till spring!! LOL. I kill these over winter. This year I have too many to allow myself to kill them all. I will go broke. I need a plan.
Thanks Nathalyn. Come spring there are some calling out to me.
WOW!!! Great prices!! (Exotic Tropicals) I want to order!! Asking them if they will take PayPal though instead of credit card or maybe I can order via mail with check?!! LOVE it!! Bonnie
That pink Chinese Lantern--a quart for $10!!! WOW!! What I want to order--2 Hibiscus for total of less than $25!!! S&H included!! WOW!!!! Thanks for the link!!
This could be dangerous lol, they are all beautiful! Rachel
Rachel, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Go buy yourself a few, it is your special day!!
Awwww, thanks Kell! Everyday must be my birthday cause I 'buy a few' of something everytime I leave the house :)~ DH brought home a birthday cake and a bouquet earlier, I gave him a smooch and said thank you so much, (but I was thinking 'buy me something with roots darn it') Rachel
Those sites call to me "buy me, buy me!" But then I go outside and look at all the ones that I have to overwinter and I put my creditcard back in my wallet.
Last year,I overwintered most of mine inside a pop-up greenhouse in my basement garage. I was able to keep the humidity high enough that most of them did fine all winter (only lost one out of about 20). It was a pain though, pulling them out occassionally to clean up the bud and leaf drop.
Happy Birthday Rachel! I agree - - buy yourself a hibiscus or two!!
I will warn you.......the more you garden, the more husbands think "why buy her flowers? she has tons at home". But instead, I now ask for practical things like dirt. LOL
My problem is it is cold and wet here in the winter. I get lots of rot. I am going to put a heater in my hoop house this year. I say that every year and even bought one last year. Then I am afraid I will electrocute myself and don't. The moisture drips off the roof of the hoop house constantly it get so wet here.
That is good Rachel, treat yourself well every day!!
Hopefully, a heater will help dry out the air some so that you don't have so much condensation. I hear you on getting rot when it's cold and wet. Tubers and bulbs here will overwinter fine when it is really cold and snows, but if it is just above freezing and rainy, things rot in the ground.
WOW
i found one i liked & went to order it
total with shipping to Calif for one little $15.00 plant in a quart size was $81.00
needless to say i did NOT order any
Dick
Strever buy a liner or ask them to ship bare root. The only way I can think it would cost so much is if they mailed in the soil!! WOW!! I do NOT blame you!! $81!! That is exactly why I cannot afford to buy many plants!!! It takes sometimes MUCH longer from seed but the cost of a couple dollars vs almost $100!! WOW!! Bonnie
hahaha hehehe Ask for DIRT!! hehehe Who would have ever thought you would actually have BUY Water and Dirt and Air!! If you had told someone 100 yrs ago they would have thought you drunk or loco!! hehehe
Dick, that makes no sense. I send out gallon plants all the time and I can send 4 of them for like $30. Who was this?? Mel sells them, ask her. She won't charge yo $81 either. LOL
kell
go try to order one plant from the first link nathalyn gives above
Dick
LOL Dick. Well forget that.
We can ship into AZ and Canada, but there is an additional Agricultural Inspection Fee of $60.00 per shipment.
I hope that wasn't the one I wanted some from in the spring.
we are NOT in AZ. or Canada
Gee Dick, I thought I was.
LOL. I read that as California!! God, I need a brain so bad.
if we were in Az. or Canada it would have been $140.00 for one little plant
Dick
Must be an error. Email them.
I hope that is an error. I have ordered from them several times and haven't run into ridiculously high shipping costs. Here is a summary of one of my orders - - 7 quart size hibs at $12.39 shipping:
El Capitolio "Poodle Flower" 2 $3.00
God's Grace 7" 1 $15.00
In Paradise 1 $15.00
Purple Magic 1 $15.00
Snow Queen 2 $3.00
Subtotal : $57.00
Discount : $0.0
Tax : $0.0
CONTACT Shipping : $12.39
Total : $69.39
And yes that is NOT a typo - - they had a special on Snowqueen and El Capitolio for $3 each!!!
who is Mel and what nice things can I say to be her friend and buy her plants?
I have already started hinting for dirt and manure for Christmas, thanks for the tip ladies. Who would have guessed the things my parents said Santa would give me if I didn't behave (dirt and rocks) when I was little would be the very things I had on my list as an adult?
Rachel
I will email you, Rachel. And yes, I probably spend more on dirt and doo than on anythign else including my clothes. I would love lots for Christmas.
Hey Nathalyn, and you didn't buy us all one???
Nathalyn
you convinced me to try again
i must have typed in Canada instead of Calif. the first time ???
Kell also send me the Mel info
Dick
Would you also send the Mel info to me please.
Thanks,
Kell, I bought mine from Mel last summer. It bloomed TODAY for the first time, and it's PEACH! I was expecting it to be red, and I'm thrilled with the dark peach! It almost makes up for the very first Cotton Candy hibiscus bud that filled up with water during our never ending rain last week and rotted.
For everybody else, Mel sells on ebay as Meltn sometimes. I bought the hibiscus and a brugmansia that bloomed all last summer, and is fuller this year. It hasn't bloomed yet this year, but hardly any of them have. It's been a weird year, no spring rains, and now we got a solid week of rain, and are expecting more this weekend. No fair, THREE Saturdays in a row with rain. :(
