How do like my new brug?

Fruitport, MI(Zone 5a)

I just got this brug last week. It hasn't got any flowers yet but I'm hoping it does soon.

That is a very nice looking healthly Brug you have there. Which one is it. Maya, Peaches and Cream or a Snowbank?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Looks like a great Snowbank to me. Miner's Claim has those leaves too but it does not seem to grow so many spurs up and down its trunk like Snowbank does.

A very pretty one!! You lucky duck!!

And WELCOME to Dave's!!

Laurens, SC(Zone 8a)

I want one of these variegated ones SOOOOO bad! Kudos on your find!! Bonnie

Fruitport, MI(Zone 5a)

You are correct kell. It is a Snowbank. I also have this variegated brug called "Sunset" I don't think I ever saw a Maya or Peaches and Cream. Anyone have a picture of one?

I am sooo jealous.....I 'm new here and already have to check several times a day just to see what is new...if not for me them I am happy others get new treasures like this....my husband thinks I am nuts...he cannot believe I found a place where others like me dwell.....I hope to get my sticky fingers on a varigated cutting this year....I have heard they are a little touchy.....No one around here sells them...so I always have to do the mail thing.....I would love the instant gratification of shopping in person and ooohhing and ahh-ing over a selection...lucky you!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Neat on ya'! I am so happy with my variegates as they seem less vulnerable to mites...and in my book...that makes them SUPER!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Very nice, the snowbank is especially an eye popper!!
Good for you. They both have beautiful foliage, and the blooms will be, well, you know, the icing on the cake. :) Can't wait to see.
Welcome Kathy!!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Sooo pretty!!!
thats the beauty of the variegated foliage
Still puts on a show when not in bloom

Fruitport, MI(Zone 5a)

The identifiaction tag on the snowbank says unauthorized propagation prohibited. Does anyone know how I can find out when this status expires? I love to share cuttings.

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

SHHHHHHhhhhhhhhh......... ;)

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Very nice, kathyvm!

8ftbed posted a nice photo of Maya under my thread about my inability to grow variegated Brugs.

http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/530080/

I was under the impression that 'Unauthorized Propagation Prohibited' thing mean no propagating for *Sale*/financial gain?

Anyone know for sure?

Fruitport, MI(Zone 5a)

Any day now I will be rewarded with beautiful flowers. I'll post again when they open all the way.
Nan, a couple of different people said the same thing. I guess if it's just for a trade, it will be ok. I think that I will try to overwinter this one, so I won't be taking many cuttings though. I do want to take a cutting for myself. I want to see how it will work so I know for next year.

Looking good kathy, can't wait to see your bloom pictures!!
You are a great brug mommie!!!

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

I have a small one that I think may be Peaches and Cream. This is my only one..just bought in the spring. No cultivar name on the tag.
Do any of you think it is a Peaches and Cream?
It sure is giving me a lot of pleasure.
I will have to learn how to keep it over the winter.

Ugh!! HOW did you get yours to bud up so fully, kathyvm?? I need a tutorial.......=(

Fruitport, MI(Zone 5a)

mkjones, I don't know what made it bud so nice. I had it in full sun then moved it next to the house for a few days. We were having high winds and I didn't want to damage the plant. It seems to do a lot better when it gets less sun. I lost about a dozen blooms when it was in the sun. I haven't lost any more blooms since I moved next to the house. It gets only evening sun now.
Starzz, I'm not sure which one you have but it sure is pretty. I suggest that you get some systemic insect control and treat your plant before you bring it in. A couple of years ago I had a real bad problem with bugs and that seemed to help. Good luck. You don't want to loose that one.

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Thanks for the advice KathyVM.
I look forward to seeing yours in bloom.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

I have a couple pictures of my Snowbank
first with flowers

Thumbnail by MG99
Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

and then with seed pods that all were done by mother nature.

I contacted Terra Nova Nursery (I think that's their name) because of the patent on it. This is the response I got back from them. It leads me to believe that hybriding is worth a try, but cutting to propagate is not.

HI Linda,
This is neat; I have never heard of it crossing before. If you get any variegated ones, they could be good for sales after stabilizing. Any flower color change with that nice margin would be great.
As far as the legalistics go, We do have a patent and COPF on Snowbank; but hybrids off of it are fair game; good luck and please let me know any results.

PS
Since this plant is variegated on the edge of the leaf; you are likely to not get 3-5 variegates out of hundreds. You might want to grow lots of seedlings and just keep any that are variegated at all. They might well stabilize nicely.

Keep me informed!

I'm thinking that mine was a Snow Bank. It's at the neighbor's house because my new roomie decided on her own to just give my plants away. She better treat her right and give me a cutting is all I have to say.

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Karrie

Oh!!!!!!!!
Why on earth would she do that without asking you?

MG99..well isn't that wonderful for you. Do you know the difference betweeen Peaches and Cream and Snowbank. Has Snowbank got more white on the edges of the leaves. I am still guessing at which one I have.

Kittrell, NC(Zone 7b)

Someone told me (just can't remember who) that the seeds from a veri. will not germinate. Is this true? I have a Maya with several seed pods I was thinking I would have to throw away.
Melanie

Hi Melanie.
This is what you might be thinking you heard. Most seedlings from a variegated pod parent will be albinos. You will never know until you grow them all out.
Starzz, Your plant sure looks like Maya to me. The buds and blooms are nodding which makes me believe it's a Maya. Looks like a healthy one also. Beautiful Blooms.

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Oh..Thank you GardenGuyKin,

When you say nodding, do you mean that they lean outward a little bit instead of hanging straight down?

This is a little closer photo.

Linda, I can't believe that you got so many seed pods. I hope that they mature for you. I have never gotten a seed pod on any brugmansia that I have had. I've grown them for 3 years now. This is my first year with the snowbank. I'd love to cross it with another. Does anyone know how to pollinate them properly?
Karie I can't believe that your roomie would just give your plants away without your approval. They are part of the family too.

Starzz, That is exactly right.
Here is a photo of my Maya back in July.

Kittrell, NC(Zone 7b)

Here is a picture of my Maya. I also have several seed pods. It sits next to a Charles G. If I try to start them I wonder what I'll have?Hummmmm........

Thank you both for showing us your photos..

Now we will wait for kathyVm to see her blooms.

Have a great day all..I'm going to the garden centre..they are having a sale!!!

Laurens, SC(Zone 8a)

kathyvm--I cannot possibly mail your cutting(s) without an address and since you are not in the Address Exchange I still need your address. I will not be able to mail your cutting until around October 7th--since I have arranged to mail all the ones I have addresses for prior to that. I have dmailed you without response. If you have decided to back out, please just let me know, ok? Thanks!! Bonnie (Servants_heart)

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

Karrie, I hope you can go over and get at least a cutting if not the whole plant back.

I've been told too that most if not all varigated seedlings will be albino, but it's worth a try.

Starzz, yes Snowbank has much more white on it's leaves than either maya or P&C.

Linda

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Linda..I see the difference now that I have looked at some more photos on the net.

Thanks
Carol

Fruitport, MI(Zone 5a)

Bonnie, I am in the address exchange. I just checked and everything is there. I'll send you a dmail.
I think the major difference in the Maya and Snowbank is the color of the variegation. The snowbank has yellow variegation, and the Maya has white.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Yes, I have to say I thought her doing that was a little much. But she'd heard me say to the person delivering them to me that I wanted only 3 (because I was trying to be nice). They brought ALL of them and we had to scatter them around. When I got back from a Spokane trip and noticed they weren't all in the yard I asked her. She told me Elaine next door had some and so I went over and told them they were loaners but would most likely want them back. This girl has no idea what a brug is or how to take care of them. It was droopy yesterday when I went over there. She brought it in the house. I told her the climate change would most likely make the leaves fall off and it wouldn't be that ornamental for awhile but she can't throw it away. Geez my life has had some freaky turns lately.
