Saved from the compost pile.

I bought an amarillias about three years ago and it never bloomed. I got beautiful leaves each year but never any flowers. So I finally decided to toss it out. I sat it on the porch and was going to take it down stairs later. Much to my surpise it has started to leaf out and has a bud that is about to bloom. Go figure. Just when I give up on it, it produces a flower. Saved from the compost.

Sometimes they respond to stress, they must have been pretty stressed, faced with the compost heap!

You can keep amaryllis for years and years. The trick is to remember to give them lots of sun and water in the summer so the bulb can store enough energy to produce a bloom. An occasional shot of high phosphorus fertilizer (high middle number on the package) helps encourage blooming, too.
