Suzi,
From the information I've gotten it's more of a safety/privacy issue for the sponsors. But once a sponsored child reaches adulthood I would think they would leave it up to the sponsors to stay in contact.

Yes, I agree, think it should be left up to the sponsor!! You want to continue helping, corresponding with letters +/or gifts, or whatever, then you do. If not, you don't... Good luck!! ~ Suzi :)
Yes, I do think it's a privacy/safety issue. And having actually visited, I can kind of understand.
Kylee,
Did you ever hear back from CI about keeping in touch with Gabriela?

If anyone is familiar with the christian rock band Audio Adrenaline, they started an orphanage in Haiti. Sounds like they are doing great work there. Here is the web link: http://handsandfeetproject.org/.
My husband went on a mission trip to Haiti from our church and met a couple named Wallace and Elenor Turnbull. Wallace's father,a pioneer missionary started a mission in the desolate mountains behind Port-au-Prince He died there and raised his sons there. His son Wallace married there and raised thier sons there. With thier vision of serving the whole man since 1943 they have built schools to teach the children ,the next generation.
They had as of 2005 between 25,000 and 30,000 children . They get one meal a day, uniforms, books, and teaching that frees them from voodoo. All of this is only $15.00 a month per child. Since I know first hand most all of the money is used to the greatest good.,I sponsor 10 children. I have had 6 to graduate and find this way of giving very rewarding. There are many other extensive accomplishments but this is just about the children.
Will be glad to send more info. I get a report, picture, letter.and even a Christmas card. (hand made)
btater,
Is this the mission you are talking about?

I saw the Compassion Intl discussion and had to read! I also sponsor two children, a boy named Hedinson in Peru and a girl, Mariel Grace who is in the Philippines. Hedinson turned 7 yrs old in January and I have sponsored him for four years. Mariel Grace will be 7 in October and I have sponsored her for almost one year. Both children are either a few months older or a few months younger than my grandson, Dawson, would have been. We lost him to pineoblastoma when he was nineteen months old. About the second year without him, I began to think about sponsoring a child. He loved other children so, and in thinking that I could no longer give gifts to him, I could instead provide a gift to another child. It has been an absolute joy to be able to do so.
That is why I also started sponsoring our first. We lost our son, Nick, in a car accident when he was seventeen (nearly seven years ago). We now sponsor two girls in Honduras in his memory.
