I work in a nursing home where a resident produced a looseleaf of poems she said she wrote. I read a few that looked like it could be something she wrote. Then she produced this one. I really wonder if she wrote it, It seems too good.
Has anyone ever seen this poem or one like it. I don't want to be suspicious but if she is claiming this is hers and it isn't I think she may have a problem.
My Garden of love is a special place
For that is where I abide in my Lord’s grace
He guides my shovel, my rake and hoe
And the seed that I plant I know grow
He is by my side continuously
He gives me peace and serenity
The flowers bloom in spring, summer and fall,
And winter the time that ends my toil.
Then the plants gently sleep in mulches and and snows
Til in the spring Nature slowly bestows,
A shower of flowers once more to be seen,
Arrayed in all colors never perceived.
Each moment I spend in My Garden of Love,
I come closer and closer to my God above.
Though I’ve toiled very hard, this place to achieve,
My Garden of Love is a place that is real.
Surrounded by stones entranced in the earth.
At times, I did think how unmovable they were.
But a prayer sent forth to my Lord above,
Boulders became lighter than flights of doves.
The earth gave up secrets of ancestral past,
Their were marbles and pieces of china and glass.
Children once played in My Garden of Love,
And they too were watched by my Lord above.
My Garden of Love is a wonderful place,
Where worries and sorrows will be erased.
My Lord will comfort all who come to see,
My Garden of Love, He designed it for me.
Forever the flowers in full bloom will be,
Til time rushes into eternity.
I leave to you My Garden of Love,
Kindly watch over it with tenderly love.
Ever read this before?
So beautiful I copied and saved it. Please let me know whoever you determine is the author.
I couldn't find it on Google, which is a good sign. It's a beautiful poem!
~ Marylyn
it is...lovely... hope she did..
somebody did, why not her? it is beautiful
Even if she is delusional about writing the poem. She is an old lady in a nursing home how would she be in any trouble? My friends great-uncle used to claim he wrote the bible and no one ever came and arrested HIM :))
No, of course she wouldn't be in any trouble. Just like if a child told you something that was questionable, even though they weren't hurting anything or anybody,
you'd want to know the truth. The difference is I think the elderly earned the right to be a little eccentric. We
couldn't just let that kind of behavior go with a child.
I've not found it online, either. It's beautiful.
I did find this, and thought you might appreciate it, along with your elderly friend:
My Garden
This garden is my special place,
I love each bloom and pod;
The birdsong lifts my weary soul,
It's here I talk with God.
-- Ruth A. Ellinger
I think the elderly and children have a special spark and connection with the universe that we as "responsible adults" loose touch of.
:)
It is absolutely beautiful. Even if she didn't write it, it's okay for her to think she did.
Every writer has one piece that stands out and surpasses everything else they have done. This may have been her crowning glory so to speak. accept her word that she wrote it and please tell her that you shared it with friends who enjoyed it immensely! I know I did.
She gave me a opy of the peom that is why I was able to post it. She wan't absolutely foreign t computers but the fact that I could speak to someone on the other side of the world was still a mystery. I told her I was going to share the poem with other gardeners which nmade her very happy. Her chest puffed up so she was very proud too.
I think it's wonderful, and I agree with Zanymuse--anyone who writes (or paints) will have one special work that is much better than the rest. Those are the "inspired" pieces--they seem to flow out of you and everything just "works".
If you saw most of my watercolour paintings, you wouldn't think they were anything special (I don't!) but a couple of them are surprisingly good--better than you'd think an amateur would do. They even surprise me, and I painted them! LOL!

I think there is a good possibility she wrote it. It is good but definitely not professional. Her meter is pretty good but not perfect; the rhyme scheme is good (but not exceptional) except in a couple of places; "stones entranced in the earth" should be ..."entrenched in the earth"?
I think if this poem had ever been professionally published, the editor would have worked through these things, because they could have been easily fixed.
NOT to take away from the beauty of this poem, but if she copied it, she copied it from an amateur, IMO. I think there's a good possibility your lady wrote it.
Can you post other samples of her writing?

I loved the poem, and whether she wrote it or not, she shared it with you and with all of us.. She deserves a big "hug" and a"THANK YOU".
Gardenwife----I loved the one you posted-My Garden---
I brought home a good sized flat rock from our Rocky Mountains and was looking for something I could write on it and place in "My Garden"----thanks to you I now have what I was looking for. smile

Pennzer, When I go to work tomarrow I will ask her to post more poems. I imagine she'll be thrilled.
Jordung,
Tell her I think it is very pretty also. There is no reason she couldn't have written it, since it is lovely and speaks from the heart! ~ Suzi ♥
wonderful, does she have family to ask its wonerful if she did wonderful if she did not ..
Jordung, I am the one who asked you to bring other samples, and I thank you for doing so.
I am quite certain the author of all three poems is the same.
Notice the 3rd and 4th lines of "Adventuresome." She uses "achieve" and "unreal" as if they were rhymes, apparently thinking, to her ear, the long EE in each word makes it a near-rhyme. Now note the similar lapses in the garden poem:
Line 11 - "seen"
Line 12 - "perceived"
Line 15 - "achieve"
Line 16 - "real"
Line 17 - "earth"
Line 18 - "were"
Also, ask her if she has a son named James Thomas. I bet she does. And please tell your lady how much we have enjoyed her poems. What is the title of the garden poem?
....Pen
I think that just the simple fact that she was proud when you said you'd share it with other gardeners indicates that she must have wrote it. It IS a beautiful poem. (As was the one you posted, gardenwife! I, too, decided to make a sign for my garden.)
Pennzer, that is so neat that you can analyze the writing like that. I'm somewhat familiar with that since I studied Religion (the Bible) formally at school-- I know it's done, but not HOW it's done. I'm glad that your conclusion is also that she wrote it. And I'm glad she's proud to share! :)
