Going back to dial up!

Decatur, IN(Zone 5a)

Last weekend I found my husband at the computer desk with our old internet companies website on the screen. I casually asked him what he was doing & his reply was that he was trying to download the dial up service cause he was tired of paying the much higher DSL bill. I was so bummed, especially since he didn't give me much warning. This will mean I'll need to change email address again & then go back to all the sites I visit & change the info. Not to mention that on occasion I sell items online so past customers still have what will be my old addy as reference and I have such a long list of them to weed out of my address book in order to notify them of the change. After not succeeding with the download of the new service, DH will have to stop in their office to aquire the CD needed to start our new account. This means I do have a weeks time now to alert my friends but until we have the new account started, I won't know what my new addy will be. I'm so stressed about this, and then I also don't look forward to the slow downloads of dial up. Wahh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry for the rant, but I do feel a bit better ;)

My solution was to buy a domain name ($8.95/year) and then an online mail drop using that name. Now I have the same email address regardless of who my ISP is.

Hey, Gemila...let me know if your email addy changes...I need more pots!!

Gemila, you can use Thunderbird email system (thru Mozilla browser) and have your old email addy forwarded to it. That way you won't have to create a new address. OR, you can use the numerous freebie online email systems (Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail, etc)...that way in the future you'll always have a steady email address no matter what ISP you have.

Darius...you got a domain name that cheap? Hmmm....that sure gets my attention. I wasn't aware of that being available. I should look into that! Thanks!

'Shoe, take a look at domain names through GoDaddy.com.

I hope your hubby needs to get something online & it won't happen because of old slow dial-up.
I went on wireless about a year ago, never will change again. I like instant openning when I click on a site.
Ours only costs $34.95 a month, plus I have 2 cell phones with the same company, all comes on one bill & there is a discount because of the multible items. So internet & unlimited minutes cell phones, whole deal is around $100/month. We used to have a $150 land line phone bill most months.
There are lots of ways to go to save money other than going back to dial-up!

Back to dial up! That would be grounds for divorce in this household! Bob thought about switching back to it a few months back. I took him to a friends house to download 6 songs he wanted to buy. It took about 3 hours to download them and at home I downloaded another 14 for him in less than 3 minutes. He is finally convinced that dial up is not for us!

I also broke down the costs for him.
Dial up service 14.95 monthly
2nd phone line 21.95 monthly
total = 36.90

DSL service 38.78 Monthly

savings = 1.88 monthly (with dial up)

Somehow that 1.88 seemed pretty trivial!
