Leaving for Las Vegas...must see's?

Des Moines, IA(Zone 5a)

I'm leaving for Las Vegas with my Sister on Wed. the 13th. Do you have any 'must see' suggesstions?' I've never been there so I'm not sure what to expect (other than Casinos!LOL!)

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

YES! Cirque du Soleil, Mystere. They have a number of shows, but that one is the original and INCREDIBLE!

Buffet at Mainstreet Hotel

Shopping Outlet Mall near downtown...the open air one...GREAT Chicos.

There is a new shopping mall on the outskirts...Harrington, H-something...brand new and built like a European village with the stores below the condos, attractive walking...great stores like Pottery Barn. I detest malls but was really impressed with these two...the latter for the concept.

I think it is called Red Rock Canyon....easy to get to...go early in the morning...great colors in the 'scape.

Vegas is really trippy! The smell of freshly killed money is everywhere...opulence beyond comprehension, but there IS more than smoke filled casinos. The Bellagio has an exhibit of Fresh Impressionists and some good art in the lobby (the ceiling).

Have fun. I was just there last month.

Ooh, I love Vegas! It's like Disneyland for grown-ups. My favorite thing-- and it's free-- is the fountains outside the Bellagio. At night the fountains are all lit up and the water dances to music. I think it plays every 15 minutes to 1/2 hour. It's such a contrast to the craziness of the casinos. The art on the ceiling of the lobby at the Bellagio is Chihuly's glass.

Our first time to Vegas we were entertained enough just walking around seeing all the casinos and how they do their themes. There's a lot of free things to see along the way. Pick up a "What's On" magazine for more info and a good map, and bring good walking shoes! Coke World and M&M World are fun, across the street from NYNY. Each casino has their attraction-- Mirage has a volcano, Treasure Island has the pirate fight, etc. I'd also recommend, if you have time, visiting Freemont Street. It's the old downtown and a lot different from the strip. The strip has a lot of high-class restaurants (fun to try for sure), but on Freemont street you can find really cheap food and drinks.

Our last time to Vegas I saw the art exhibit in the Venetian, the Shark exhibit at Mandalay Bay, and we saw Cirque du Soleil's "O". They were all neat. I'd wanted to see "O" for years, and I'm glad I did!

Sin city is also full of smoke and porn (ads)-- everywhere you go. Just a heads up.

Have a GREAT time-- I know you will-- and let us know how it went when you get back!

A MUST SEE is red rock canyon. You will need to rent a car to get there, but it is wonderful. The colors are so cool. Take your camera for sure. Freemont Street is a must see also. They have a laser light show every hour on the hour. Changes every hour. It is fantastic. Have local things of interest set up, like boxing, street magicians, caribbean bands, etc. You will love it, as long as you stay out of the casinos.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

I was there a few years ago on business and had a blast in the evenings just wandering around watching the stuff that's free. In addition to what has already been mentioned, Caesar's Palace has an interesting indoor "mall" with statues that periodically come alive.

Also, as Carol and Dana say, Cirque du Soleil is really wonderful, but beware they have a new one that is "x" rated, so best check before you get tickets. "O" and Mystere are both safe....

Thanks Everyone, I'm so excited! 'O' seems to be the one thing that people I've talked to at work say we have to see. Yes, good shoes and 'cool' clothing a must! Should be a blast! Thanks, Jill

HAT and Sunscreen a must!!! Plus a water bottle that you can squirt on your face!!!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 5a)

Probably too late, your already gone, but I'd reccomend Ethel M's candy, has a gorgeous cactus garden just off the strip not far from UNLV. Also on I really enjoyed the car museum at the Holiday Inn showboat, was 10 years ago, if still there was very interesting.
