I have a house in Connecticut with a lawn with almost more weeds than lawn. I would rather not replace the lawn but know nothing about killing weeds in lawns. I have two big rose gardens on this property that must be protected from chemicals.
almost more weeds than lawn.
My lawn was the same way - and I have chickens roaming so no chemicals either!
I put down lime a few years and have been digging weeds by hand as I have some
time. This year I used corn gluton in Spring. Its getting better slowly. Patience. And
dig by hand whenever time.
Good luck!

Hey, we have that "problem", too. For me, part of the decision not to use chemicals means tolerating more weeds. One benefit: often the weeds stay green in the summer when the grass turns brown. And they're only weeds if they're unwanted. I don't mind some of our weeds-- I found a pansy growing in our yard yesterday. Otherwise, vinegar is a good natural weed-killer, along with pulling. There are some good tools for pulling dandelions, without even having to bend down (I've had one recommended to me, but I haven't gotten it yet and right now I can't think of the name...). Sprinkle some grass seed in the bare spot after the weed is pulled. The point of putting lime on the lawn is that it changes the pH, making the soil more favorable for grass and less so for dandelions. Good luck!
Be careful with vinegar. Too strong and it won't let anything grow.
Learned the hard way.

Knowshowrosegro, you didn't mention what type turf you have, but if it is a spreading type (and most are), regular mowing and watering will eventually allow the grass to crowd out almost any type weed. Your grass won't mind the mowing, but the weeds will eventually succomb to having their tops chopped off regularly. Anything you can do to make your grass more vigorous (water, fert) will help it overtake the weeds.
