Car Help

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

I don't know if anyone can help or not. We have had the car to two places and they can't find out what is wrong with it. It is a 90 Chevy. Lumina that starts fine when you first start it. When you go somewhere no matter how far and shut it off it will not start again for several hours. Does anyone have any good ideas as to what it may be?

could be a cracked coil , when it heats up the crack opens and
the coil wires open up and then it dont work right till it cools back down.

I had a Toyota years ago that did this. The mechanic put a new starter on it. And still it did it. I went back to him and said, that didn't work. He said the starter was defective and put another one (charging me AGAIN!). That didn't work.

I finally took it to another mechanic and toldhim about the first two starters I paid for. I let him drive the car for a couple of days. When I went to pick it up, he had installed a starter button near the ignition. The wires between the ignition and starter were the problem. So he installed different wires and connected them to the starter button. After that, anytime it wouldn't start, I'd press the starter button and voila! I owned the car for several years after, until some drunken bozo hit me head on, totalling the car. (I escaped with only a few scratches)

Makshi,

I know not the same brand or even vehicle type.

Had a 1989 Plymouth Van. Fuel pump in the gas tank. Had fuel pump changed when it quit altogether. Continuously had problem with the fuel pump overheating in the gas tank. After driving for about an hour, turn the car off, wouldn't start. Wait for about 45 min to an hour, fuel pump cooled down and it would start again.

Cool down time was less when I had a full tank of gas. Mechanic had a hard time figuring out problem, because by the time I got it to him, pump wasn't overheated.

Just a thought.

There is an ignition module next to the coil that could be your problem. You have to take off the "dog house" from inside the van to check for a spark anyway.

Hmmm....I wonder if this is why a truck I'm looking at buying tends to stall after highway driving for a bit (30 minutes to an hr). I was hoping it wasn't anything serious.
