Since I am literally surrounded by kudzu, I am thinking of trying to make some jelly this year.
Anyone grow this yet? Chocolate Mimosa
75154 - your just trying to get me in trouble again arent you? lol I saw that post ;-)
Ok, thats a new one - Jelly from Kudzu? I dont remember ever seeing a fruit on them. You sure you arent confusing Muskadines with Kudzu?
me? little old me?
slgrowers,
"google" kudzu jelly and you'll be surprised.
TA DA! The one, the only......all the way from Raleigh, NC......JC Raulston Arboreatum's Albizia 'Summer Chocolate'!
:~D
(Hey Marc....rocking on my heels, looking innocent, and saying "La la neeee" (use Curly's accent...of Three Stooges fame) I slyly looked around under the tree for seed pods for us...no luck!)

stunning . . . good size to, ahhhh
Gorgeous! I trust you had your shovel handy :-)
Marc
or something to cut off a cutting!
It was right next to the Visitor's Center & Bookstore......right outside the windows! The best I could do is "accidentally" drop my keys and pick them up again (along with a stray seed if I saw one!)...but no luck! And BELIEVE ME.....I tried! LOL

Wow - that's a pretty tree. I looked for a regular Mimosa at the nurseries here (Fredericksburg, VA) in the spring, and they all acted like I was crazy. I ended up not finding one. Still wish I had one, but that chocolate one is nifty... maybe I should get one of each.... if I can find them.
RedMaggie,
Mimosa is VERY invasive in your area and that's why you couldn't find one to buy. You might want to check and see if it's even legal for you to plant a Mimosa.
Mike
ahhhh.... funny, none of the nurseries told me that. I'll check into it. My dad is part of the department that houses the agriculture department. I know people have them in their yards around here, but maybe those were presents from birds and such.
Thanks.....
Just a thought. I'm pretty sure Albizia can be done via root-cutting if it isn't grafted. Someone mentioned 5 gal with good size. A few roots off of that during planting wouldn't hurt it and the stunning plant above probably has some surface roots. Thanks all for the tip on this one. I'm definitely going to try and order a number of these for next year.
A. julibrissen grow very easily from seed. Jury is still out on 'Summer Chocolate' I think.

I've tried to start what was called "Black Mimosa" seeds... haven't had any luck so far.... How about you Kachinagirl .... have you got one of these started yet....... I'm not ready to give up .... I'll be searching for more seeds this year.....
I don't have any seed. My guess is that we will need a cutting or a plant started from a cutting for it to grow true.
K
I'll buy the pruners if you'll go get the cutting ..... LOL
Deal!
:~)
Hi Karen, just thought I would let you know, that my neighbor has one of these beautiful chocolate mimosa trees. The leaves have fallen or I would take a picture. I have tried to get one by seed several times over the years but they all come out green by the time they reach a height of 2 feet, hense the reason I have 4 on my property. I have also tried to do cuttings and all have failed. I did have a semi short lived success with a root graphing but once the heat set in, it also failed. I have the feeling I am only way I am going to get one of these trees is in her will and the use of a shovel. I would be more then happy to gather you some seed pods if you would like though. The flowers on hers are a light shade of pink, great contrast to the dark foliage. LMK
Hey Carat!
It was nice meeting you in chat. I would love some seed from your neighbor's tree! What the heck. I will davemail you to find out what you are looking for so we can trade. Thanks!
sidebar to Marc....if I get one with any color, you're first on my list :~)
K
Has anyone found this in Texas yet? Other than at the one grocery store in Arlington (I'm guessing it's not still there.)
Thanks.
Keep me in the loop if you discover a source for Summer Chocolate - I'd dearly love one too.
Hines Horticulture is the grower, so you could probably ask a local nursery to order it for you from them.
