My pride and joy!!

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

And no its not a kid!! LOL About as big as one though....this is my Alocasia Robusta.........largest of the large alocasias.Leaves can get 12 feet from the stem to the leaf tip in the wild.Grows fast when warm..each new leaf is double the size of the last leaf. This was a tissue cultured plant.the size of a petunia seedling when I got it several months ago...I love everything about this plant..the stem color, the undersides of the leaves and the rubbery feel of the leaves..less waxy then other alocasias. And oh..the waffling pattern..just keeps gettin better.

I'm wondering what size it will be by fall..in the greenhouse it put up a new leaf every few days........has slowed a little now that its outside.I need to feed it a little more often......LOL :-)

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I found a place in Florida that sells the Alocasia Robusta. At the present they are sold out.
They have all kinds of tropical plants. I am including the web site for any one who may be interested in reading up on the Alocasia Robusta, or any kind of tropical plant
.

Oh my, Eclipse! That is one big boy plant. Hopefully you'll keep us updated on it's progress.

N. Mississippi, MS(Zone 8a)

kyle - could you email me a link to the vendor you purchased that from? Im amazed at some of the plants you are successful with in your zone. That thing would love my heat and humidity. Thanks

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Gorgeous plant, Eclipse. When I saw the second picture before opening it up, I was thinking why in the heck are you petting a croccie.....lol.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

I see a lot of their stock on Ebay too. Good selection..kinda pricey though. :-)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

It grows to 25 ft~WOW!!. At the rate it is going that will be around September. LOL! Didn't you say the GH you use is very high though, Kyle?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

That is one awesome ear!

I looked on Ebay. Is this not dishonest or is it just a play on words? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=43542&item=3980364584&rd=1
They make mention of A. robusta but say their plant is A. mac? Is the name "Borneo Giant" used for more than one ear commonly?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Shoot Chele, now I may have to buy that!! LOL. I found the description OK. But he says he will charge $9.99 for them and he is actually charging $7.99. LOL Now that could be a clever sales ploy, LOL!! Makes me want to grab one.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Kell if you decide to buy one, share a picture with us cause if he has any left I may get one as well.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

That ebay sale if for Alo macrorhiza though and not Alo robusta like Kyle has.

A mac does get big! I have some by the pond. :)

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

The seller talks about the alo robusta then goes and starts talking about the one he is selling. He is comparing the two together for there size and how they grow. You really have to read or you could get taken. That's like the other day I found a blue Brug for sale on EBay. Then when you start reading through it you found out you are buying another flower that has flowers somewhat like a Brug. I could be wrong but I think it was a vine of some kind.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I have not seen that sale but I would guess it is Datura if they are calling it blue. Just about any shade of purple qualifies as 'blue'.

N. Mississippi, MS(Zone 8a)

I bought three lol I know its not robusta but eclipse hasnt shared his vendor contact so I cant find robusta anywhere. I saw those borneo giants and they sound pretty large as well and just had to get a few. I will post a photo once I get them. If anyone finds a vendor that has any robusta please let me know. The only sources I could find were sold out.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Badseed it's not a datura. Check out this link.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=25463&item=3980835924&rd=1

It's a Iochroma australis.

Edit to make corrections to the link.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

OMG! Those are gorgeous!! Did you buy us some? LOL

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

I can't remember where I got this one..I buy things from vendors online,I buy off ebay etc.Seems like it was in Fla. and was an aroid vendor.

Kell the roof at work in the greenhouses is about 20 ft the dome is 80 feet tall.No problem there! LOL

If you look really close at the pic.........you might see wayyyyyy down at the soil surface there is two pups about 7 inches tall... :-)

I will try and see if I can find the invoice for the plant. If I find it I will surely share the info.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

O M G ! ! !

Sucker Beware ! should be at the top of that Ebay page .......... LOL

Can't believe the price that is bringing for a rooted cutting of Acnistus australis ..... scheesh!

At some of our popular online sellers , you should be able to find all you want for about $8 or so.

Check DG link http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/1015/

Sorry my post landed on top of you Kyle ...... hehehe */;-)

these two online sites carry seeds and sometimes plants of robusta.

www.sumatraflora.com

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Great looking ear. A pot full of those would be hard to hold upright in our Iowa winds. LOL!

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Shirley, yu got that right this year..wind wind and stillMORE wind every day..what a pain. :-)

N. Mississippi, MS(Zone 8a)

I think my next project will be to make a blue brug. Looks like I could get rich. lol. Thanks for those links, everyone is sold out... grrrrr

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Great looking Robusta, Kyle. I bought one from Ebay last year that was definately not Robusta.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Kyle I think I will wait a spell to see how you do with your Robusta before I think about buying any. Plants are all sold out. Then the first link you gave the seeds are 10 for $10. That is a dollar a seed. I'm not a penny pincher but to me that is seems a little expensive. Especially when everything I read they say they are a little hard to grow. Then to try and over winter anything my space is getting limited. So please keep us up to date on how well yours is doing. I am sure you will not have any problem with growing it, I have seen some of your treasures here on DG.

Linda

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

How hard or easy is it to grow Alocasia from seed? That is one I have never tried and I love a challenge.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I've done it,Kyle gave good advice and it worked, just save your pollen,it is not hard.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Waaaaaaaait a minute! Pollen?? LOL I considered buying the monster seeds and growing them. Do you mean I have to pollenate my own flowers to get my own seeds? Do you try to cross them or to they have to be self pollenated?
