Mid-South Forum (KY, TN, LA, MS, AL, AR) not a request, yet!!!

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

The Mid South Area as defined by the USDA consists of the states of

Kentucky, Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama....
and I added Arkansas

We are trying to have a Mid-South RoundUp and while sending emails to all the subscribers who might be interested I got to thinking it sure would be nice to be in touch with people from this area and compare notes about plants, weather, soil, etc.

I very seldom go into the other local forums and I have felt that having them disjointed the Dave's Garden Family, but if it were are going to be local forums anyway why not have one for our part of the country.

I'm not opening this thread to start a controversity, I'm opening it to see if there is enough interest in having a Mid-South Foum to warrant creating it.

Judy

Edited to inculde Arkansas. In my mind and heart Arkansas is vital part of this group!!!!

I am most interested. Please add my name to the request. How about Terry? She is in our area. She might be interested also.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

I consider myself in the mid-south even though NC is not included. My weather is much different than the NC Piedmont and/or the NC Coastal areas. By the same token, a Mid-South Forum holds no interest for me as my growing conditions do not jive with Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana nor much of Tennessee.

Huntsville, AL(Zone 7b)

Great idea Judy! I'm for it. P.S.Darius, After this year I don't know what my growing conditions are anymore.

I'm not too thrilled with the idea of having individual forums for say diff states, I too believe it pulls us apart, folks tend just to stay in their regional forum. I would take part in a mid south forum for sure. but It wouldn't monopolize my time

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

Ha! AR isn't even on this forum, forgive me LOL

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Kathy,

Yes it is now forgive me!!!!

LOL thanks,

I would be a regular visitor if such a forum was added.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

I'm kinda sitting on the fence on this one.

I feel that the individual state forums have taken so much information out of the public eye. I popped over to the Texas forum a few weeks ago and was amazed by the amount of info there, and couldnt help but think that alot of it could have helped members from other states, but because it was an individual state forum, many members dont frequent it.

I couldnt honestly say that i would be active in a Mid South forum. IMHO, I feel that the "melting pot" family of DG is what makes it the greatest gardening site online. Allowing multiple state forums will do nothing more than seperate the community further. It also makes it very difficult to try to keep info organized. Take for instance the climate, MS is alot like Texas, and most tropicals will grow here the same way they grow there, if i'm interested in looking for threads that deal with gingers, not only do i have to go to the tropical forum, now i have to go to the texas forum, if we add a Mis South forum, well then i have to go look there. It was so much easier when you only had to look in the tropical forum.

Probably not what y'all wanted to hear, but i think my opinion, or vote, would be not in favor of.

MSJen I believe everyone who does NOT have a forum for their area feels the same way you do, but those who do have forums, love them, which is the reason I opened this thread.

Judy

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

I agree with Jen that while the regional forums may be informative, they are also divisionary.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Guys, debate is for another thread. This one was opened just to see how many people would be interested in a Mid-South Forum... period.

Please open an Anti-Regional Forum Thread if you wish to discuss that topic further. I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings, but if you read my original thread you will see that I basically agree with you, however DG is changing, regardless of if we personally like it or not.

Judy

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

I dont really feel its necessary to open an anti regional thread, is it?

I thought you were asking if there was an interest in it, i thought i was simply stating that there was no interest on my part.

I'm sorry if i misunderstood the intentions of this thread, and will no longer post to it.

Jen

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

Hey you didn't hurt my feelins none, I've been whipped before LOL.

I would visit the forum if there were one, I often visit the other local forums too, so's I dont miss out on nothin.

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

judy, judy, judy...I don't know if I you will let me post here, or not, but Cincinnati is really more southern than northern, I've found out, and so can we be included?....

Besides, if you lop off all the Mid-southers from the rest of the threads, there won't be very many posts on the 'mid-south not' forums'...(I didn't say that, did I? Sorry, I didn't mean to controvert!) lol t.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Tabasco - Ohio is not by any stretch of the imagination Mid-South, but we can make you an Honorary Mid-Southerner if you would like. You are also invited to the RoundUp 2nd weekend in October in Moscow, TN, 40 miles east of Memphis, TN. This is where the swearing-in ceremony will take place.

I guess Washington State is right out, then. ;)

I'm all for anyone wishing to have regional Forums, as I tend to bop around everywhere. Or maybe just nosey.

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

well, judy---I said 'Cincinnati' which is quite mid-southern--just north of here in Ohio it goes northern, though. Our street is even the beginning of the Appalachian highway...sorry, can't go to the RU although we'd love to...have to stay 'round home for family reasons...

We're sure you'll have lots of fun... t.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Oh Cincinnati being right on the stateline, I understand now. Gosh I admit to being slow!!!

I don't know how I missed this before, but I had to laugh at that comment. Ohio may not be considered "mid south" by any stretch of the imagination, but I personally live further south geographically than many people who live in Kentucky.

Few include Ohio when they talk about the "midwest" When someone talks about the "east" Ohio usually isn't included... "up north" doesn't usually include Ohio either, and obviously we're not "south" The first time I was in college, I was 10 miles from the border of Tennessee. Everyone there said I talked funny. When I came home after being gone a couple of months, everyone here said I talked funny. We Ohioans are just a breed of our own I guess... or the "blacksheep" of the nation.

I personally don't like the state/regional forums either... besides, Ohio keeps getting left out. ;-D~~~

Norwood, MO(Zone 6a)

Can southern Missouri be included... We are sort of mid and south... besides I was raised in Mississippi... LOL.... and have friends in AR, TN, KY, friends and kinfolk all over MS,

Melissa, I know what you mean... Missouri gets the same kind of non rating... if they wont let us in, You and I will have to start our own.. LOL...

j/k.... I was just stirring the pot.... ;)

Austell, GA(Zone 7a)

what is georgia?

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

LOL, Brenda, Goergia occupies it's very own space, unidentifieable.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

JudyCooksey isn't currently member of DG so feel free to ignore her suggestion and create your own REGION!! Mid-USA??? Right down the middle excluding those states who already have a Forum???

Growing seasons would be wildly different, but it's the same for CA

We'll see you again when we finish our outstanding projects. We gotta catch up on chores and get a greenhouse build before cold weather, but find we're spending too much time on DG, so we aren't going to renew until we get things done!!!

Hugs to everyone!!

Camilla, GA(Zone 8a)

Plantnutz,
GA is downright southern, lol..No mid to it..

Larkie

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Larkie, I live 15 miles from the N. GA border and they don't consider their zone "southern" LOL

Camilla, GA(Zone 8a)

Darius,
I can believe that...Down here we consider folks in Albany(25 miles north of me) yankee's or foreigners, lol.. Strange breed down this way.

Larkie

Arlington, GA(Zone 8a)

Darius,Larkie, I can vouch for there being a strange breed
down in south Georgia,DH was raised here in this little
