Yesterday DH and I talked about how hard work to take care of our land.. we only cut grass 5 acres of land.. but it's getting too much for us.. Plus my DH's leg never get better. Every time he ride on his tractor, it's killing him due lots of pain. He got two blood clots in his right leg that never been better. He had it since he got hurt at job.. got burned at the plant. He got hurt in 1995. The doctors couldn't do anything about his leg cause it's very risk to do the surgery.. We went to diffferent doctors for his leg.. most of them said can't do it.. The blood clots had scarred in the big artery in his leg. His leg hurts daily.. I know when he get older and older.. he might lost his right leg. He told me several times and he feel like want to have it cut off.
I love here a lot but DH's health come first. We are trying to finish with this house inside and everything then we will start to sell it and find a land about 1 1/2 acres and build a house. We will build almost same design the house but bit different. This house is only one year old, still new.
I told DH when we sell this place.. I had to take all my bananas/ elephant ears with me! LOL.. DH said you can take it with you whatever you want to.. Those bananas plants came from my Mom's plant.. before I was born.
Selling our house plus 18 acres of land....
Well it is a hard decision, but it sounds like you are doing the right thing. I am glad you will be able to take your favorite plants with you. We only have a small lot and we hate mowing it, so I can't imagine mowing that much land!
Rachel
Hope you both will find a good place plus good neighborhood and so sorry about his leg problem and we love u all.
PS... I did email you yesterday so let me know ok.

Mini,
Have you thought of just staying where you are now and selling off most of your land?
Hmmm.. I will ask DH about that..
BG that is good idea.
geezzz it seems like you were just in the process of building. Good luck to you.
I know this house is still new and never done building. We all have left is molding, add fireplace mantle, some paints..sidewalk in front from front doors.. I love here alot. we have great neighbors around that we get along well. They enjoy my yard so well.. There are several people that want to buy this land before we build house and still want to buy. I have some people telling us how beautiful our land is after we cut grass.
I talked DH about selling most of the land.. He said it's too much to go with paper work and stuff like that. So I suggested him to dig a pretty pond in front yard (we have big front yard) and add two deck to walk on and fishing there.. It will be less to cut grass.. Also.. might buy some goats to put in fence where they can eat grass and roam around yard in fence. Any suggest???
Note: we have old tractor 15 years old that still running. He said He couldnt afford for new one.. That's the other reason He want to sell this land.
So,put up fence around where we don't want to cut grass and let grass grow tall become forest like and bring some more shades!!!! I would go and help cut grass but no riding lawn mower.. we are looking for one and buy one this week. I can help him out.. I can do it while he at work.. and he don't have to worry when he come home and all is DONE! I love to cut grass.. I really don't want to sell this place.. I love here so much but wait and see....
Yesterday, I was confused/ depressed and decided go ahead and make me a tropical garden.. I dug some bananas trees and replant and moved some bananas trees. I am going to looking for old bench and paint it dark pink and and add soft weather pillows. Add flower hanging pots on pole,.. add birdhouses.. etc... so I will feel better and maybe Dh will change his mind.. LOL.. I haven't been work hard outside for long time until yesterday. Oh boy, I need that. I felt so great to be outisde and work as dug and moved and replant. There's water facuet nearby so I can water/fertizler the bananas trees and others. That's place where I want to sit, relax and drink iced tea! That's the spot where it have lots of sun.. I am trying to change it into sun/part shade area with bananas trees, elephant ears, cannas, might buy two birch trees to bring shade between East to West. I will post pix under Tropical forums...
It's a beautiful place. You should consider sheep instead of goats, sheep are grazers, goats are browsers. Sheep would mow it more evenly but you will still have some high and low spots. Sheep are easier to keep fenced in. Can you have farm animals where you live? I was thinking about local ordanances which sometimes prohibit certain things. You could also rent it for horse pasture. Good neighbors are a real blessing so I would look into every alternative before putting up that "for sale" sign.
Hi, You are so lucky to have such a beautiful property. Just wondering, does your dh wear support stockings? They would really help hom with the pain if he is not already wearing them. I know from experience, I got a bad clot during pregnancy and my leg hurts like the dickens if I don't keep wearing the support hose! I'm the mom of young kids, it's hard to believe these things can change you so much, hope your dh feels better.
This is my DH's first cousin yes he is wearing the stocking still not help him that much still in pain, we feel bad for him that we hate to see him so much suffering.
Well, he needs to wear really good medical quality support hose on both legs from morning til night, he should also be seen in vascular medicine every 6 months, they may be able to tell him the correct pressure he needs for supp hose and also prescribe good pain meds, and surgeries are changing all the time, it's important to keep going to see a vascular specialist, he needs to keep his leg circulation strong so he won't lose his leg! Now, back to gardening, you have some beautiful trees!
Letting most of your property go to meadow would be beautiful - really, there's no reason to have to keep 5 acres cleared, you know? Maybe you could find some wildflower mixes specific to your area of the country and broadcast over a large area there. It would be beautiful to have a meadow, wouldn't it? And you could plant trees for shade. There's lots of possibilities! :)
I'm sorry to hear you have to give up all you have worked so hard to attain. Then again, maybe GOD has something better in store for you. I would think you could sell off the excess land or rent it as others have suggested. Keep that yard down to a managable size that you and the children can keep mowed.
My husband had blood clots for in his left leg in '79 and has had problems with that leg ever since. He is always in special stockings when out of bed but that only helps somewhat. This is a serious, life changing/threatening condition and not to be taken lightly. I assume your hubby is on blood thinners, etc. also to prevent more clots from forming so easily. But they can come back, make no mistake about that. Moist warm therapy may help to ease the pain at times. Give it a try anyway.
GOD bless and guide you thru this decision.
Bump...
Let you know things have changed.. we are keeping this place.. Know what DH did last week??
He came home from work and told me that bought me a new toy mower. I said You bought it already? He said yes, It's your new TOY! Later, man came and brought us our new mower. A big one. So I tried it out and I loved it. He said I am the one that will do the work. I told him I will do since I love this place. We let some grass around pasture grow and leave it alone..
My kids loves here and doesn't want to move. THye likes to go into wood riding four wheelers and they have friends around here. My DS cried and told us he dont want us to sell this place or move out. So we are staying here as long as until kids leave our nest. It would be several years later!
Here's our New SCAG Tiger cub mower and my DS Matt. It took less 1 hour to get or yard (2 1/2 acre) done.
Wow that is cool never seen this one before.
I'm so happy and relieved for you!
PTL Mini!!!!!!!
I am sooo happy for y'all! Cool-looking mower and cutiepie son, too.
I've always wanted to drive one of those mowers - they look so fun! I'm so happy for you, glad you can stay in your nice home and on your land. That's great. :)
Yes, It's fun. Even I don't need to trim some grass around trees. All I use my new toy and do the trim faster. Save my time. At first, I drove so bad then learned and the 2nd time better! LOL
Mni, i am so glad for you......your new mower looks like a lot of fun too.
Mini...that is so neat! But you be careful now, hear? Jo
Jo, Yes I hear/see it. Yesterday I did all the work around yard.. cutting grass.. DH just sat down and watch me riding around on my TOY! LOL It's FUN but carefully! Today, it poured rain this middle morning. We needed the rain.
DH have been telling me how beautiful our land/backyard that I have been working.. He told me that's your job to cut grass since you want to stay here. I said yes!
I LOVE a happy ending... Yea!!
Have been following this thrread, and am so very happy that you found a solution.
Now, hubby can sit back and rest, and you can keep your lovely home.
I just love it when a plan comes together! :)
I'm glad you found a solution and that you can stay on your beautiful property!
:) Donna

This is the first time I've come across this thread. Your place looks like a park!
Glad you got a new mower. We used one of those last year while our old clonker us being fixed. Took no time to mow, except we have to many spots that are to narrow for the mower. Now it's worse than ever with some new obstacles in the lawn. I'm kind of goofy, I would rather weed flower beds than mow grass, so we have lots of flowers.
Good Luck,
Bernie
