I just bought a goat for charity!

I think this is so cool! Have you heard of this organization?

I'm not sure if this is the same organization, but our Sunday and Ladies group at church have participated in the heifer project.

Will it be a family, or community that will receive the gift you gave?

To a family. This is truly the way to give to others and to think that something as small as a chicken can change a persons life for the better.

I've never heard of this group before. It sounds like they are really doing a great work. This would be a great idea for my DH and myself to give each other for Christmas...a pair of goats for someone needy. It would certainly make us feel good and it would be a delightful thing to tell others about when they ask us what we got for each other. Goats! Can you imagine the fun we'll have?

Denver, CO(Zone 6a)

Great idea for Christmas, but they also have a ton of different animals to give as well. LLamas, buffalo, ducks, etc. You can also choose if they should go to a family, organization etc. If you go to the website click on the giving catalog. They have stories of the people who receive them as well.

For those of you interested there will be a broadcast on 60 minutes:

60 Minutes to Rebroadcast Beatrice Feature
Sunday, June 12, 7 p.m. ET/PT

Heifer International has learned that on Sunday, June 12, 60 Minutes is planning to rebroadcast its interview with Beatrice Biira of Uganda, whose life was transformed when her family received livestock and training from Heifer.

Tell your friends not to miss this moving story about how Beatrice's goat named Mugisa (which means "Luck") helped her earn enough money to attend school and fulfill her dream of a college education.

Mobi, please edit your last post and remove part of that long line of ***'s. That makes the thread unreadable.

Sorry, I just cut and pasted.

We have done this for a vacation bible school project. It is a great program. You do not have to spend much money to make a big difference in someones life. I think it would make a great fathers day gift as well.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

My child's class was so excited over how this can make such a difference in a family's life that they worked odd jobs around our homes to raise enough for 4 goats. So little can reach so far for others.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

My grandson did this at school did this last year. Each class was competing against the other classes to see if each class could buy a complete farm. The school ended up with 7 farms, the best of the elementary schools in their city.

I've been to a couple of schools here in Winnipeg to talk to them about this. Unfortunately the schools where I volunteer are very inner city and as well, are helping to support rebuilding of a village after the Dec 26 disaster.

My husband and I have done something similar to this through World Vision-- a worldwide organization that happens to have its headquarters about a half hour from us. They have a very wide variety of gifts available for purchase: blankets and warm clothing, medical supplies and vaccinations, mosquito nets and malaria medication, farm animals, gardening kits, fruit trees, school supplies, even a share in a well for safe drinking water. It is very rewarding to be able to help people in this way. Anyone who's interested can see their catalog at www.worldvisiongifts.org.

I have an aunt who is 89 years old and feels she has everything she needs so I buy one or more of the World Vision items in her name for Christmas and birthday. She likes that.

Neat, Mobi! A blogging friend of mine does a lot to promote the Hong Kong chapter at his website http://bigwhiteguy.com

This is their Hong Kong link: http://www.heiferhk.org/

I love the stories that they have. The families that receive the animals agree to give one or more offspring to another family in need, that also keeps the cycle going.
