scottish garb.......

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

Here is my oldest son and family....this is his clans plaid. It took over a yr to get this made and sent from scottland. Ladies I bet my sons skirt cost more than most of us would ever pay!!! But he had wanted it for along time, now he is trying to talk his younger brothers into getting one. They all go to the highland festival and the renisance(sp) festival and this year he fits right in!! He also has a really cool shirt that he wore the first day-and i didnt get a pic that day!

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

I wouldnt be that brave either to go traditional, did he have a good time?

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

yes they love going and lizzy liked it too-she told me all about it and the scottish cows are so darn cute with their hair down in their eyes!!! i need one!

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

I LOVE those cows!! I need one too, and one of Davids donkeys, LOL.

Now he needs to dress her up in traditional garb, she would be sooooo cute in one of those outfits

Handsome family (and plaid). Wonder which clan it represents?

Also, one more thing--he might get more wear out of his expensive garb than you think--in Los Angeles, a number of men of Scots heritage wore their's to weddings and other festive occasions in lieu of a dress suit.

Don't know if that would fly in Bay City, though....

Have fun. t.

Dori, he looks awesome! I bet Wintermoor would be proud! I dated a guy from England for a bit and his family did all sorts of cool cultural stuff and Welsh, Celtic and Scottish parties were part of them. I love a man in a kilt!

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Dori, He's a man to be proud of. The Tartan is beautiful, what is the Clan? The scandinavian Bunads, the traditional festive dress, are on the same level as the Scot's Kilts and are as costly, mostly hand made. They are worn on special occasions as Tabasco said and are handed down from generation to generation. The cost is amortized over such a long period and makes it (them) a good investment. That would sure be a sight to have the three of them all in traditional garb. Aren't the Highland Games great ! Thanks for sharing a glimpse of your handsome family.

Very nice to see those pictures Dori.

My youngest son was married in a kilt last year with my husband officiating and also wearing his kilt. Best man was also in a kilt. they had a bagpiper at the wedding too, in his kilt of course. It's not a skirt. My hubby goes to the highland games a couple of times a year. What clan does that tartan represent?

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

This stuff is very new to me!!! His tartan is from the McLellan family.

Mary--what is your clan? do you have a picture of the wedding?

Men wearing their tartans adds such an element of fun and festivity to an occasion! It must have been a lovely wedding. t.

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Our clan is Forrester which is a branch of the Douglass clan but has it's own tartan. People with names like Foster, Forster, Forest, etc are part of the Forrester clan.

Here's a photo showing the bride, groom, minister, best man, maid of honor and piper. The wedding was held in a private park. The wooden carving has nothing to do with the wedding unless you could call him a silent witness. The lady in the wheelchair is the brides mother, from the Stewart clan.

Great photos both of them! I was in England earlier this year and found a kilt pin with my family crest on it the MacIntyre clan. Just had to get it now I can start saving for the kilt

Mary---what a lovely wedding picture...it looks a lot like Scotland...but I'm assuming it's Oregon, right?! Thanks for posting...t.

Very cool. The plaid almost looks Black Watch. I'm Macfarlane from my mom's side. I checked history and found the Macfarlanes were noted cattle thieves who prefered to work under a full moon. Which became known as "Macfarlanes Lantern". They did support Robert the Bruce so not all bad. Frank

All I know of my family is that not much is known about them. According to a sheep farmer on the way from Ayr to Loch Doon, the Doons were warriors. Two families (his ancestors were one of those) made a pact with them to supply sheep products and food to the Doons and and a small castle was built near Loch Doon where they could retreat and be safe from attack. The Doons ran out of people to fight so they went off to fight foreign wars and didn't come back. The castle fell to ruins and stones from it have been taken to other places for other building projects. The sheepman said something like "do na be dismayed at the wee cahstle, it was hell for stout". It sits on the shore of Loch Doon. The River Doon enters the Atlantic Ocean at Ayr. One of my second cousins was married on the bridge that spans the river. On the east side of Scotland there is Doon Hill where a famous battle was fought, but in all the history my DH has read about Scotland there is no mention of people with the name of Doon.

The Tartan my son is wearing in the wedding picture is mostly green with yellow and white, a hunting tartan. The lighting was not good, it was a dark overcast day.

Dori,

My DXH (McKinley) is scottish. When we were married he got himself a kilt and took up playing the pipes. He had such a tin ear, he could never tell when he played the wrong notes, and our cocker spaniel then, was sorely pained by the noise bouncing off the walls in the house during the practice sessions. It was a contest of howling.

But ya had to love him, he tried so hard. I think (after I was gone) he actually got involved in some of the marching pipe bands and played at some festivals.

He wore knickers under his kilt. He wasn't shy.

Haveing been born in Ayr and coming to the States as a wee braiwn (small child), I can say as one who wears a kilt, only real men were kits. England forever, Scotland a day longer!!! Clan Graham
