summer bubbler alternative.... and quick tour by request

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

ummmmmm.... Kell - those aren't pepto pink!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

What was I thinking Karrie!! Oh..... you mean there is no pink salvia?? Well, forget that then.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

lol

RICHMOND, VA(Zone 7b)

I've got a bigtime hankering for the purple/blue guaranitica ("Black & Blue") salvia - possibly a perennial here. What a color! It has the dainy annual pink salvias (that reseed in droves every summer) all around it, and they will be blooming in July. (Can I send you a few babies, Kell ?)
The bunnies just ate all my morningglory seedlings that I was using to cover several tree trunks from lost Leyland Cypruss trees - too wet - and now I am inspired to locate the red mandevilla - and on it goes!
(At least I don't know the tune to your song, Kell; but my mantra is "'ya gotta know when to fold 'em" ETC -- and it is always there ready to pop out)

Kerhonkson, NY(Zone 5a)

Is Autumn Damask as beautiful and carefree as it looks? Sounds like the rose I'm looking for in upstate New York ... can't do a lot of coddling (weekends only) ...

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Yes it is.
The hardest part is making sure you don't get any chemicals on the foliage - fertilizer, insecticide, herbicide or anything else.

Otherwise I topdress with compost or some 10-10-10 in the spring and remulch.
A sucker I moved out in the street bed is starting to rebloom now but the main bush has just been growing.

8ftbed,
Hi there! Do you happen to have any pics you could upload into the plant files? Seems this is your golden opportunity for pictures and data, since we don't have anything in there about it. ~ Suzi :)

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Done... it'll probably show up tomorrow.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Blaine where could a person find a Autumn Damask? On the web site I mean. Are they pretty thorny I know it is a rose but just wanted to ask any way.

Linda

Moon Twp, PA(Zone 6a)

Thanks Blaine, You're the best!! I'll be looking forward to seeing your beautiful pics and info on there!! ~ Suzi :)

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Oh yeah, they're armed and dangerous but if you get downwind of a full flush in progress you'll forget the thorns and be looking for somone or something to hug.

google it which is how I hunted down my sources 3 years ago. Here's a few...
http://www.chambleeroses.com/autumn_damask.htm (name you can trust for 8.95 a gallon - the source of the ones in the picture)
http://www.bandbnursery.com/orders.htm (may be an option)
http://www.vintagegardens.com/cgi-bin/namesearch.pl (stickershock!)

http://www.rosefire.com/401.htm (where my imposters came from!)

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I had already checked out Rosefire and they were sold out for 2005. Thanks for the other links I will check them out.

Linda

Kerhonkson, NY(Zone 5a)

Thanks for the info! Haven't found one yet ... maybe too late in the year for this year ....

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Nice rose, very pretty!

Hi Blaine :)

LOVE your garden....

Could you introduce me please? Third picture, tall fern-like on the far right?? Here's a wild guess-- Ferncliff Illusion dahlias??

Blue Water? Is this common knowledge on the Brig forum and I'm just out of the loop?

How much Epsom salt do you use? On Brugs only? Everything?

Joy juice? What's that?

After seeing your garden, next time I'm too dirty to go inside, I wont fee guilty putting some urea on the ground... embarrased if the neighbors see me, but not guilty. :)

Thanks

Susan

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Hi Susan and thanks.
tall fern-like - I'm assuming you mean the chartreuse colored plant which is a Sambucus. 'Sutherland's gold' I think. I do have the Ferncliff Illusion dahlia which just started blooming but they are dark green foliage with big fluffy white blooms with the tips edged in lavendar. This is the first one to bloom this year.
blue water - just a general reference to water soluable fertilizer like Miracle Grow. I apologize for the confusion. I saw it used in this forum first or maybe a book thats referenced often in this forum and started using it myself.
epsom salt - irregular and inconsistent amounts myself although I do use it. If you searched on it you'll find entire threads concerning it's use. I'll dump in a couple of those small bags to a bag of lawn fertilizer. I also apply it directly to the beds throwing handfuls or using one of the handheld broadcast spreaders. If I add to liquid fertilizer I'm mixing up, it probably comes out to 1 cup per 10gal. give or take.
joy juice - sorry again! Another personal reference to liquid fertilizer.

Hey Blaine! Isn't it time for some more pics? hint hint.... Indulge me!

How is your son doing by the way? Hope all is well!!

Nicole

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Hi Nicole! I've been taking some but haven't posted but will ... probably tomorrow because.... SUGARWEED is in Chicago!! I'm driving down and kidnap her for a day. Probably tomorrow.

Ira's fine. Was home for 3 weeks in May but otherwise is back in CA.

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

Blaine...Your yard is beautiful. Those lucky Calif folks don't have anything on your yard.
I have an old waterpump and a watertrough in the barn covered with dust. I need to get them out and get them back to work.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Blaine, I have just one thing to say to you. Please, please, please move to San Antonio and be my neighbor.

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

oh mini!!
If there's a vacancy and a job.. I'm there!! That's close enough to my adopted home of Corpus Christi. The dread of going through a job search is the biggest hurdle to pulling stakes and heading back south. Especially since I have only one DD left at home. BUT - the next move, I have to be where I can have some bantam chickens and/or guinea fowl running around!!

picabo - get pump and trough out! I went for a long time before I could find a stock tank. Till one day I finally visited... "Blain's Farm and Fleet"
who'd of thunk?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I need some of your joy juice around here today, Blaine. What a luscious dahlia.

OH Polly I just saw your kind offer. Alas, I have no room for pink salvia, I am now wall to wall plants. Though I sure would love to see a picture of it. Would you, could you post on?? You make the grouping sound so pretty!!
And it is July!! LOL

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Because of Ferncliff Illusion I ordered more this year. The first one of those has opened as well. A beautiful dark purple color. Reminds me of a favorite Crayon as a kid which I think was called Red Violet.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

sugarweed is one of the nicest people on DG!!! I hope you two have lots of fun and take lots of photos!!!

Marietta, GA(Zone 7b)

Is Sidney going to your garden?? She'd love that. :)

-- Just spent about an hour looking at Dalia's online.. Swore I'd stay away from them, but they are just so darn beautiful. There is a GA Dalia Society and I'm thinking of going to a meeting.

Now off to search out more about Sambucus

:)

Beautiful Dahlia bloom, Blaine.

RICHMOND, VA(Zone 7b)

Kell, here is the pink salvia in my patio planter; I bought the original plants (two) 4 years ago, and they reseed every summer. A small dainty blossom, although these are not fully open today.

Here's something I didn't post in the forum.
A ReneeO cross I started from seed back in Feb.

Your yard is a beauty. Loved the pics. keep them coming. What was blue flower 6/7/o5 photo? Beautiful bllue. Dixie

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Blaine/Renee, that's a beauty, love the way the calyx lobes flip up. Looks like you already have a little pod going. It seems to have a hint of pink on the edges, does it stay yellow? What's the cross? Blooming in 5 months is great. L

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

8ft. what do you do about your Brugs in the winter, isn't it too cold there for them, do you dig them up, or just take cuttings, they all look so good, and such a great garden.

Doris

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Thanks Polly. They do look so delicate!! Your yard looks so nice too. Is that a big proch behind it or a garden room?

Pretty bloom there Blaine. I agree with Linda, looks pink tinged to me too! That would sure be pretty!

RICHMOND, VA(Zone 7b)

Blaine, you have given us such a treat!
All under your "bubbler" thread.
Kell, it is a screened porch; good for use here 7 mos of the year. I keep it really screened by my plantings.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Blaine you and Sidney have a blast! She's a fun lady! Thanks for the new pics too!

Nicole

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

WOWZERS!!! I told you zone 5a was magic!! Many congrats to you, Blaine, and Renee!!! I planted the attached seedling 2/22/05, and she has lots of Ys and teeny, tiny, fuzzy, wuzzy, bitsy, little baby buds, they are darling!!! Interesting about this cross (so I think), she was burned badly by chemicals and they blew out her top, then she had ant killer thrown on her leaves, it rained, the granules stuck and it defoliated her, just as she was coming around, a limb fell on top of her and knocked off what was left of the top of her stalk, I assumed it was all over and walked away, really sad - well, here's the interesting part, I was told that one should NOT top brugs, because that will thwart their Ying, so, of course I've never intentionally done that, but the limb did - the injury was as straight as if cut by a sharp knife. Look closely, at the attached pic, and I hope you can see that she Yed outta that straight injury. I'm amazed & I'm thrilled!!! She has multiple Ys, and buds from all. See if you can guess 'who' she is, I'll include her name in the next post.

Sure looks like a definite Y to me Sherry and so healthy. Amazing.
Polly, your Salvia looks so nice.
And Bllaine that is a pretty Brug. Not bad for starting in February. Is that when you normally start your Brug seeds?

Jeanette

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Boy Sherry, that baby's had a rough ride. Hope the buds hang on for you, mine fall off. Keep us posted.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Gosh, definitely Ys and definitely buds. You and Blaine sure have me way beat. I do not know what is wrong with my seedlings. I am going to go yell at them. Not a Y in sight.

Looks like you have a real winner there, Sherry!! One that loves Arkansas.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Hey, thanks, all!!! We are in the middle of a super storm and I hope those fuzzy baby buds are still with us tomorrow - thank goodness I photoed them today. The seedling is: L'Amour x EP Kell sent me the seeds. She is, maybe, 3 1/2 feet tall, and, in this photo, you will be able to see the white styrofoam cup, ringed around her base, at the ground - I sent photos of her and her litter mates, some in styro cups and some in tomato success kits. This girlie, was NOT in a tomato success kit, I put her straight into the ground from the styro cup. I have another Kell seedling, same parents, L'A x EP, from the tomato success kit, that is six+ feet tall and promises to Y soon. I am absolutely thrilled with these seedlings and I feel certain, if they had not both had such difficult starts (chemical burn), that they would be blooming now. Thank you so much for sending me the seeds, Kell, seems like we were sorta star crossed at that time. If I can manage to acquire seed next fall, assuming I don't break my other ankle, or run into other difficulties, I think I might be able to manage an earlier blooming seedling. As it is, I'm really in awe of Blaine and his early bird, she is really a beauty!!! Hahaha, I feel like the runner up in the academy awards, lol!! This photo is of Kell's L'Amour x EP, with her styro cup ring on her base, also planted 2/22/05. My original, unknown girl, 12+ feet is in the background - she has flushed three times and getting close to another, assuming the transformer doesn't go out again and the power company cherry picker doesn't sit down on her (which is what happened last year).

whew... been day-tripping since 4 this morning with Sugarweed.
Thanks to all and now I'll try and answer specific Q's
Oriole - blue flower is anchusa "azure blue"
Linda - yes, on the 2nd or 3rd day it does finally get a little pink tinge. The foliage has been the greatest but it's got that baby powder smell. (about braindead now) but I believe this was the aurea pink x golden lady.
Doris - this is the first season of brugs for me. I started last Nov-22 with some rooted cuttings I ordered. Then received seeds from Brugie (oh Lord, I've got an 8' monster that's Y'd but not set bud yet), ReneeO and Brugaddict then cuttings from Brugie and ReneeO as well. I grew them hard in the basement under shoplights then took over the living room and finally into a hoop house in Mar. So - a couple I'll take the pots in then take cuttings and start from scratch this fall. It worked so well my first winter through, I figure I'll feed and water them and grow them as fast as I can again.
Sherry - that news I can use. I'm learning too just how forgiving these things are.
Jeannette - that was when I got the ones from Renee. I started the ones from Brugie in Dec actually (although I didn't know the brug tricks!!) Only 2 of those sprouted and did so 1/29. One of those is in ground and now 8'. If I'm blessed with any interesting crosses this fall I'll definitely start them at least by Dec so I can see them bloom the first year. I sprouted 8 from Brugaddict in Mar and several of those have Y'd. One will be opening in the next week or two. I'm excited about those

more coolness Sherry!
