Red Buds

Northern California, CA

Those are beautiful Ursula.....and I agree about the confused thing. As I was rearranging the plants in the lathe house this morning, I noticed that several of my Thanksgiving & Christmas cacti have 1" - 2" BUDS! So I had Easter Cactus for Memorial Day and now the others are blooming in the summer. Strange!

My (first this year) red epi bud is starting to show color; the other 2 are a bit slower.

Sorry the focus isn't great.

Wow! That's a brilliant red! Lovely, Ursula.

Mine had 1, count it ,one bloom last month
it has never bloomed for me,mostly cause the peacocks like to eat the plants
so the plant does not look great

darius,
about one more week to go for a show?

All of you, would you venture a guess on the name of my red one?

Karyn, I love that color! Your flower looks great! I would trade nice flowers to have peacocks in my yard:-)

Ursula, it is going to be tough pinning down a name. Your flowers don't seem to have the wide back petals so that might be a clue. I'll start looking through some catelogs to narrow it down. Here's one link: http://www.epigalleria.com/catalog.htm

Congrats, Darius, on your first buds!

I could venture about a half dozen guesses Ursula. I started going through my new book (mostly pictures) and by the time I got to the "J's" I already had four possibles. Nothing really matched though.

darius & cc - congrats on blooms, post more images as available!

Still enjoying this year's show of Epis.

The ones with the red back petals are still blooming, even developing some additional buds. Additional buds are also showing up on some of the newly planted pots that resulted from dividing two of my large tubs. The triangular shaped leaves with the spines is still producing new buds, although none have fully developed and opened as yet.

The third tub has yet to be divided up, since it insists on continuing to bloom. One of today's blooms:

Ah, that's a great picture. Lovely! I think I've seen the last of my colored blooms, but the white ones are coming!

By the way, I just got the Logee's Summer 2005 catelog, and they have a nice selection of epi's including E. 'Strawberry Splash,' E. 'Just Beautiful,' E. 'Unforgettable,' and Aporophyllum 'Edna Belany.'

That's gorgeous :-) Keep the pics coming please....some of us are living vicariously through the rest of you LOL

I'm seeing a lot more activity on the recently repotted Epis. The white ones are now budding also and some of the pink also....amazing that I will have a second bloom albeit a lot less that initially.

Love that bloom!!!!!

Yay, Candy, more blooms!

Well, my red one is still trying to bloom, but ever sooo sloooowly!

Here are a couple of the ones still blooming....this one is the one with the red back petals.

And one of the small pinks. White ones, more of the red back petals, and the spiny ones still budding, perhaps 6 or so of each that are popping on plants recently transplanted. Also still have buds on some of my cuttings from Pat's, but very slow to develop.

Here's one of the Holiday cactus plants that is somehow getting mixed signals from our freaky weather.....warm, cold, warm, cold....so it has started to bloom for the 4th of July Holiday coming up.

And speaking of "red buds".....not anything to do with orchid cactus, but this red Begonia seems to be on steroids this year. It's a full 5" in diameter.

Great pictures, Candy. I love those red back petals and the two-tone look to the flowers. That second fuchsia one has some interesting veins to the petals. It almost looks like it has lavender streaks in the petals. Very pretty.

Candy, that latest red Epi bloom is.....well it's a fabulous photo! I love the angle you chose for it :-). It really shows off the bloom nicely :-)

Thanks Julie......there are more and more of those with the red back petals coming on. These are in the tub that I haven't repotted yet........I'm assuming that since it stayed so cold this year for so long, these are just the "late bloomers" that in a normal season would already have come and gone. About 4 of the large pots of repotted Epis have additional buds forming......some of the "prickly" triangular shaped leaves are loaded, white coming back, small pink......it's a mystery. :-)
