Red Buds

Northern California, CA

A couple more red buds getting ready to open.

Great color, Candy!

Northern California, CA

Unlike the red bud that I knocked off and let open in a bowl of water, this one is another version of the bright pinks. The back petals are all red and you can see the red markings on the inner petals. I'm trying to mark them all this year, but am already losing track of the slight variations on these different versions of the pinks I have had for years. As Julie said, "The bees did it." LOL

Wow, that color just glows on my screen!!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

That is an especially beautiful one, Candy. We might have to hunt for a name for that one. My Saigon is similar, but I don't think it has the red color within the pink petals.

Oooooooo they're all soooooo pretty! Congratulations Candy and Clare :-)

Wow, they are all just gorgeous!

Oh yummy! So happy for you Ursula. Is this late for you this year?

Mine were all about a month behind because of the very cool Spring weather we had. I also see some damage from the big fluctuations in temperature we had....rain and cold followed by HOT, then rain and cold again. Some leaf damage on the tops that looks like typical winter damage, but this has happened in the last couple of months. I may rethink my winter storage and put them in the greenhouse this coming winter.

Chilly and windy here the last couple of days......85F predicted for the weekend.

Looking forward to seeing your blooms!

Fair Lawn, NJ(Zone 6b)

thanks!!
We are about 3 weeks late and I also see buds in several stages, even smaller than those in my pic. No doubt due to the chills in May, they are delayed.

We are still having nights in the 50's so I'm waaaay behind you! I don't expect buds on my red one before August.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Darius, nighttime temps are in the 50's here too, but I can see how previous colder temps could set them back a bit.

Here is my Saigon today:

After it first warmed up and I put them outside, the weather changed and we had a long spell of nights in the low 40's and a few even cooler but staying above frost. Our daytime temps are running from the mid 60's to mid 70's, with MUCH rain.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

I'm sorry about that. I hope you get buds soon, Darius.

Northern California, CA

It was 46F when I got up this morning! Actually turned the furnace on to take the chill off.....it was 65 in the house and it is JUNE!!!

Got my fingers crossed for you guys who are waiting for the big show to start......it will just prolong the season for all of us and allow us to enjoy these beauties well into the summer months!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

It's been very cool in the morning here too, but I have another Saigon flower open today.

Clare-your Sagion is "GORGEOUS".
You & Candy pictures are making me wanting some of these lovlies.
I have the night blooming cactus(white) that was my mothers-it looks like it is just about gone.If it dies it will break my heart because now that she is gone, it had maded it that much more speical to me.

Modi'in, Israel

Clare, Saigon is lucky I don't live closer to you ;-). Or perhaps, to be more precise, you are the lucky one.....I would definitely be a very loving kidnapper were I to be so naughty as to steal her from you ROTFL. She's soooooooo pretty! :-)

-Julie

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Julie, if you lived closer to me, you wouldn't have to steal her because I would give her to you!

CC, that is so sad that your Epi oxy is dying. Can you tell what is wrong with it? You might take cuttings and try to root them if you think the plant is not going to make it.

Modi'in, Israel

Clare, you just made my day.....well, my evening! You're very sweet. But don't ever give ALL of her away...just bits of her to share. She obviously loves living with you :-)

Colie, I agree with Clare... Take cuttings of your mother's Epi. They root easily. : )

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Ah, thanks, Julie:-) Here's the last shot of the day just for you:

:-)

It has started dieing from the top going down the plant. It is a brown color with little black dots-do you thing it could be some kind disease? I took it out of the soil & the stem & roots looks just like the top of the plant-only the middle part of the plant has a hint of green to it & is slowly turning pale yellow. Are there any hope in saving my plant? If so what can I do? Your help is very much appricated.
edit to add: Can I cut the top & bottom parts off & try rooting the middle of the leave?

Modi'in, Israel

Yes, you can root the middle of the leaf. Just make sure you put it in fresh soil (just in case it's the soil) and make sure you put the right end into the soil (the ribs should be pointing outward, not towrad the pot).

Thank you so much salvia-I will get some fresh potting soil & get started.
What is the best typy of potting soil for my Queen of the night-what brand?

Modi'in, Israel

You'll have to ask others about the brand. I'm not in the States, so I'm not sure what brands are out there. I just use 50% regular potting mix and 50% very sandy cactus mix. That works for me. Others have different preferences depending on their zones and other factors.

Thanks Julie-your mixer sounds good to me.
All others jump in & let me know your favorite mixes for your orchid cactus.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Mine are all in just potting soil. I didn't know until last year about adding sand for better drainage, but since they are doing fine, I kept them as is.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Julie's mix is a good one of half potting soil and half cactus mix. I've also used 100 percent potting mix at times, and other times 100 percent cactus mix. You can add Perlite or Pumice to the mix to give it better drainage.

Yes, I would take cuttings of the greenest parts and plant them right away.

Thanks Clare.

Clare that 'Saigon' just keeps getting prettier and prettier!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Thanks, Candy. There is only one more flower bud left, and she will be done for the season:-)

Red buds?
They are opening!! And they are much enjoyed! Both pots are flowering fine and they are still starting to bud - slightly confused.
