Coffee and...Part 18! :-D

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Good morning : )

Apparently we had a bad storm overnight. The power was off in the middle of the night when I got up to go to the bathroom, and my neighbor tells me there are trees down everywhere, even on the roads.

I cannot comment on the husband thing as I've never had one. Housemates, yes, and always an agreement to split the chores equitably.

This might be a good day for baking as it's still wet and cool.

See ya later...

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

I used to have one of those husband things. I went to work every day, just as he did and yet I came home and still had work to do. Same old stuff yall list above. Occasionally he would cook a meal, (soup out of a can and a sandwich) and he would put a load of clothes into the automatic washer, maybe he would put soap in too (he never dried and folded) But when he did the occasional "thing" he would look at me and bring it to my attention so that I could tell him what a good boy he was and thank you (He was 11 years older than me). These are the kinds of things that have kept me single for the past 15 years.

You ladies above, into retirement and still doing it? You all deserve some Bronze Awards or the very least, you deserve to let off some steam whenever you want.
I always did like that taking a vacation and leaving him home thing. :^))))

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

LOL...just have to laugh at the 'husband' comments. Yes, I know what you're all talking about...BUT...since both DH and I lost our jobs a little over a year ago (we just call it forced retirement...at our age we might as well...lol) I have to give the 'devil' his due. Mine has taken over the cooking, I do the laundry (on occasion) and the house gets cleaned in the winter time OR when we can no longer see through the windows. I think it's time to clean...NOW! hahahahaha (Who ever it was that said now that I have my eyes fixed, I'd be amazed at how dirty my house is was absolutely RIGHT! :-D)

Hi everyone!

Man! Is it ever HOT here! 93° yesterday with HIGH humidity! I worked outside as best I could, but got very little done. This morning I decided I was going to WORK no matter *how* hot it got. hehehe I'm INSIDE in the AC now...but I did get lots more stuff cleaned out of the GH's and planted. (I'm nearly finished planting the wintersown stuff...thank goodness!)

M5! Guess what? We finally got 3/4" of rain this morning!!! (Right after I spent 3 hours WATERING!!) It didn't last long...and I was back out weeding and planting some more.

Well, I hope everyone is having (or has had) a great day. See ya later.

Oh, a husband thread....don't get me started.......

Our chores are 80/20. I do all the cleaning, laundry, painting, billpaying, investing, and worrying. He maintains the car, blows snow, would do all the cooking (but gravies and butters and onions everything, so I do some of the cooking just for health reasons) and will go grocery shopping - sometimes. He has NEVER done the laundry.. He did pay A bill this week after I told him I wouldn't. He wrote the amount where the name goes - then blamed it on me when I pointed it out to him. LOL Most of the time it doesn't bother me (my doc tells me I have a control problem) He is right- I want things done correctly and often prefer to do it myself because I KNOW I will do it right.

I've often dreamed of having someone 'take care' of me. But when DH asks something about $$ we have, I change my mind!! It's been this way for 38 yrs, so I think it won't change.... I think when this one goes, I will be content to live alone - or maybe co-habitate (wouldn't my kids die if they read this!!!)

Oh did I have a day. My brother and I decided to paint my mom's bedroom and bathroom. Bedroom went great, but the paint wouldn't stick to the bathroom walls (it's on the inside of their condo) and it was hot and sticky out, but they did have their air on. I had to leave before it was completed, and my brother called and said when he took the blue paint tape off, big sheets of paint pulled off too!! Yikes!!! They are SSOO picky, I bet they wish they had hired it done!! He is going back tomorrow to see what he can do. Do any of you have any clues?? Darius - where are you when I need you!!!

It rained cats and dogs out this morning - flood watches out even. Now the sun is out and it is sweltering. I put out slug pellets last night and it looks like a slaughter yard out in the garden today. Makes me smile tho!!

Need to go on a garden walk - gone all day and didn't get it done.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Sarv, probably one of 2 things. Either the walls weren't prepped (with a wash of TSP) and/or the bathroom walls were oil-based paint and you applied latex over them. Perhaps even both causes.

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Well good afternoon ladies. Kooger, funny you should ask, I just made another rhubarb crisp. Also had a craving for some. This one is a bit tart so I'd suggest a scoop of french vanilla ice cream on it. Glad to hear you have a dry basement now.
Hap,I wouldn't want to cause any friction, but when a person retires they deserve several months to acclimate to the new hours. Sort of like getting over jet lag ? Any man that can't take care of himself isn't a man.
But Molly, a bronze award is only 3rd place. They deserve gold.
My DW, the sweetest, hardest working, most tolerant and sensible person on earth lets me get away with so much.We try to share the load, but she outdoes me most of the time.My house cleaning and laundry skills are lacking so she does them rather than having to do them over. It really is unfair isn't it, this gender gap.
Got another bunch of lumber to work on the arbor.Hope to get it finished this week.Saw a sign for local strawberries today.Thought rain had ruined the crop but looks like there is some hope.Love those fresh berries.

Lots of body oil from the steam I think you can add too, darius....bathrooms are the pits....

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Sorry Ladies, Balvenie is right, a Gold Medal it is. What was I thinking anyway, I just don't know nothing from nothing. Balvenie, I was having one of those brain bubbles, you know what I mean. I forgot we were in mixed company here, so I will say that you are a cut above the avvvverage guy. The most important thing, you recognize your wife for the wonderful woman that she is. :^)))))

But I do know painting. Sarv, it doesn't really matter what the problem is that caused the paint to come off. The cure would be a coat of the oil based Kilz to make a fresh surface for latex paint. The Kilz will stick to the old paint and latex will stick to the Kilz primer. Problem solved. Oh yes, your brother should have peeled that tape off while the paint was still wet, but very carefully.

Molly

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Molly and Darius - so you think my brother should use kilz??? He is planning on going over there and just repainting it tomorrow. What do you think would happen if he did that??? Should I tell him NOT to repaint?? Oh , please help!!!

I had a problem too in my own house with the blue tape pulling off the paint. I did wash it too. I could repaint it as it was in a room that gets poor light. However, in my mom's bathroom the light is glaring and I fear that the 'pull off' parts will show = badly....

Nuts, just when you are trying to help someone out, disaster befalls... isn't that always the way!!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Unlike Molly, I use a shellac-based primer called "BIN". It dries quickly (like less than 30 minutes) and in my opinion. covers stains/mildew, etc. better than Kilz. (I've used both.) I haven't tried the latex version of BIN, and don't think I will. I hate to mess with something I know works!

Sarv, painting over that disaster probably won't work.

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

You are right Darius, I just named the cheapest and easiest to get. And fixing the error is not an easy task.

:^)))

I painted the walls of 1 bedroom, living/dining room, hallway, kitchen and the walls and ceiling in a bathroom-condo today in 5 1/2 hours. Tomorrow I do the woodwork and will be finished. This is the 3rd apartment in this condo building that I have painted. Can't believe how quick it was, and there was furniture in there. 3 weeks ago it took me almost 4 days to paint baseboards, 38 doors, frames and trim, crown moulding and chair rails in a mid sized house. Some jobs it feels like ya just ought to move in.

Molly
:^)))

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Haven't used BIN, but shellac is a good sealer on pine to keep sap from bleeding, and would be a good pre-paint sealer too. Never cared for cleaning brushes in alcohol though.

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Ya know once I could remember it was alcohol (not vinegar) to clean that stuff, it was a lot easier. LOL

:^)))

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

I clean those brushes in ammonia.

Quoting:
Clear shellac varnish or pigmented shellac paints requires a different solvent than the latex and oil. You must use denatured alcohol or an ammonia household cleaner. When using an ammonia solution, mix it with warm water at twice the strength recommended for cleaning floors.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

I throw the brushes out.....My time and trouble is worth more than a new brush....I don't care how expensive...then it's the hands too.........such a messy mess....UGH...what's a lady to do.......????LOL

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Hap, Next week you will have time to kick back and take your time figuring out what you want to do, that's what a lady should do.

Thanks for the quote Darius. I had never heard of using ammonia for cleaning shellac.Still a little cool and cloudy, but no rain---yet. Off this morning to look for some of those yummy local berries, then work on the arbor. That rhubarb crisp, though tasty, is still a bit tart. Will I never learn???

Sarv, I hope your painting project worked out OK. Did you solve the problem? Mr. Nosy-guy would like to know.

Wow Molly, you are a 'paintin devil.

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Hey Mr. Nosey guy (LOL) - I didn't return to the disaster area. My brother ended up spackling the wall and then repainted it. He did it all in a morning and I am uneasy about the quickness of it. He said it looks like a pro did it. When I talked to my mom, she said it was OK (that means it really isn't tho) I'[ll look at it next week. I am sorry we ever offered to do it. Learned my lesson tho - I;ll always wash with tsp first. Thanks for everyones hints!

Went to a couple of local greenhouses - senior citizens day ya know...Bought that orange coneflower - cost a fortune, but with a ten percent discount, it was fairly reasonable and several other things. Now I just have to find a place for them.

Weather is hot and humid again, but it is supposed to turn sharply cooler - down to a high of 68 for Thurs. That is a mite too cold for this time of the year. Feast or famine it seems.

I am going to get that new measuring tape that goes up - anyone have it? I think it is a highly priced new gizmo, but I have no other ideas for my stepdad - and he is a real peach, so I don't mind spending the extra cashola. Fed Ex man just delivered a new tractor seat for DH - that was pricey too, but oh well - can't take it with ya!!

Took MIL to the heart specialist yesterday. Gosh, I wish I'd had a tape recorder with me. MIL was in rare form - the doctor left the room twice in a huff and ended up sending in the PA to finish up. MIL told him she DIDN"T want any new pills. She just bought 90 of the old ones - she was sick of him telling her to take more pills. He finally told her that if she didn't want to heed his advice- that was her right - but she would die. That shut her up for a few minutes. She ended up agreeing to take half of the old pills and they gave her 7 weeks of samples of the new stuff. Please, I hope I don't end up like that!!! Now I know where DH gets his stubborn streak tho.

No good food to eat here- sorry, I've been munching on some yogurt granola bars - stuck in the freezer- they are mighty tasty!

Bal - how do I know when my rhubarb is too old to use?

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Easiest way to tell about rhubarb is to squeeze it.If it is still hard,or at least firm,it should still be good. Some of the stuff I pulled was getting soft and spongy so it went in the compost with the leaves.
Sort of wonder about spackle on top of peeling paint.Hope it doesn't decide to de-laminate when it is cured.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Bal, I'm sure I figure out something....right now I just want a few days to putter with knowing that I don't have to go to work the next day.....That sounds like heaven....and if I don't go out and get stuff done, I Will have tomorrow...Sorta like the way that sounds...The one thing that I have to watch myself on is that I am a great procrastinator.....that's trouble for me with no deadlines....I only work well under pressure..time has always been my enemy. too much time that is....
I will be keeping all posted...
Sat I go see my daughter posypeddler and her new garden...can't wait.... she has posted the transformation if you care to look.....what a job she has done....I am very proud of her...she's a great gal too....
Well, back to bed...just roaming now...talk to your faces later.

Hap

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Hap, the first day of retirement I woke up and thought to myself, "I don't have to go to work!!" That continued to days 2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9.etc. and for at least a year afterwards. I'm familiar with the procrastination gene, as my best work has always been on deadline!! Enjoy!!

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Aha, my house only gets a good cleaning when I am having company. Now I try NOT have too much company! LOL DH only tackes things when we are having people over too. Right now I should plan a big gathering as there is a ton of things to fix around here. But we've done more than our share of entertaining and I am tired of it - I just want to enjoy life!

Have a dentist appt at 8am this morning- what in the world was I thinking??? I am not dressed by that time!! I already spent a sleepless night and have taken a zanax for the nerves. I may even pop another half of one. The hygenist and I don't see eye to eye and it is always stressful. She accuses me of not flossing and I swear on a bible that I DO!! Heck, she gets paid to clean the teach - go for it!!! They also want to do a full head xray and I just about die with those awful cardboard things in my mouth. I am going to stand my ground and tell them NO - just do the bitewing xrays. We'll see what happens. I am getting better about standing my ground, but I still submit (sometimes...)

Weather has turned sharply cooler - only in the 60's today. We're supposed to have three days of this, then back to heat and humidity. Hopefully I can get a lot done in these three days!

Well, gotta get fixed up so I am presentable. Take care everyone!

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Sarv,

Yep, I did that dentist thing yesterday. Talked them out of the full exrays and even the bitewings. Just got the cleaning, but did admit I should come in 4 instead of 6 months.

I had a tooth implant done this past winter, 1 to replace 3 lost molars. (Not spending money for 3 implants wooooo. My next step is to get the new molar put on the implant. Then I can chew on my left side again. Great thing about that, no drilling or anything, no pain. When I had the implant done, I closed my eyes and woke up a minute later (so it seemed) and it was done. Easier than having a tooth pulled.

Good luck today.
:^)))

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

DH and DS both left at 6 am so I'm too awake to go back to bed. Got a load of wash in and am heading to work early.

Quite a storm blew through here Monday evening. I followed it home from work, stopped at DD's cuz I didn't want to run into it. We had 2 inches of rain in about half a hour. Streets were flooded but the pumps are running just fine - no water in MY basement!! A mile west of town had 3 inches - the creek was going over the road! Yesterday afternoon it rained off and on too. Ya think we got enough of the stuff? Corn is looking yellow - if we don't get lots of heat now, crops will be damaged. My sister in Oostburg WI is still looking for their first rain in over a month. They need it badly - wish we could ship them a little. lol

Filled the last 3 pots last night so no more pots to fill - still have a dozen or so RU plants to get in the ground - if/when it decides to dry up long enough for me to pull weeds for a few hours and make room for the plants. The weeds have won the battle in part of the garden. Got about 20 cannas to plant too. Most of the co-op ones are in the ground but last year's, that I overwintered, are still in a half-bushel basket. As usual I need more time ---- and less rain. :)

edit: I forgot (duh!) my sad news -- the top of my tallest 'Marco Polo' was broken off in the storm! The broken off part had 18 buds on it, now there's only 2 left on the stalk - makes me so sad - I could almost smell them already!!!!! :( ...foopid weather!!

Robert - yummy yummy!!!!!

I was up this morning at the usual time 6. My son had already taken the trash, yard waste and 2 recycle bins to the street for pick up (I went to dinner last night with a girlfriend) I had asked him to pick up the mangos around the yard. He "forgot" to do that. So I got the rubber gloves out, clipped up my hair and set to the task. I filled a wheelbarrow with those stinkin' things. Flys, knats and mosquitoes everywhere. Felt around in the pond for fallen fruit, luckily none there. So the yard is cleaned up until later today when I have to do it all over again. Just cleaned those things up on Sunday and this is only the beginning of the mango harvest. Yech!

I'm breaking out in itchies over this. Well, got a couple jobs to do today, better get on the move now.

See ya later
