Have the fireworks started?

Valinda, CA(Zone 10a)

I heard quite a few popping and whistling tonight. How about in you areaas?

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

You do fireworks for Memorial Day? We can't even buy them here until about July 2nd, and not even then if it's dry.

Or, are you talking about something totally different?

Valinda, CA(Zone 10a)

Oh, these are not legal. The stands open just before the fourth and many cities ban all forms.

I am talking about hearing them. There was a barrage just as I was starting this answer. I believe that people bring them up from Mexico.

That should tell you about how we are being protected from terrorists. Thirty or fourty years ago a neighborhood group would go camping in Baja California. A couple of the teenagers would buy fireworks and bring them back. I never understood how two teenagers coming back across the border avoided having their vehicles searched.

Oh that reminds me. I had a motor home then and before we left the area where we camped we would clean up and fill plastic garbage bags. They got tied to the top of my motorhome and usually we would forget to unload them in town and come back across the border. The bags were never ispected either.

Yeah, makes one feel real secure and protected doesn't it?

Hi George!

I've heard a few pops here and there but the real testing of the arsenal doesn't begin till mid June. Fireworks are illegal in Illinois so most everyone who has the bucks to blow on the stuff just drives over to Indiana where it's legal. The only thing to remember is you have to go early like now because the closer it gets to July 4th the more you risk getting busted by the cops when they see your Illinois plates in the Fireworks Warehouse parking lot! I used to buy them but now I just sit on the front porch and watch someone else blow their cash!

We sell 'em year-round in Tennessee. The most ironical location is a nearby gas station. Yep - you can buy fireworks, gas, a lighter and beer all in one convenient stop. (Scary thought, huh?)

They're not illegal here (except by city ordinance), but then again we get enough rain that it's a rare year it's too dry to set them off. Traditionally, people do fireworks on New Year's Eve and July 4th - less frequently on Memorial or Labor Day holidays.
