Propogating Hydranga

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

I have a huge climbing Hydranga. Does this root in water or should I put root power on the ends and plant them? Will they root easily? This plant is going so fast I can't contain it.

Thanks,
Kathy

I used rooting compound. I believe hydrangea to be very easy to root. Check out http://www.hydrangeashydrangeas.com/propagation.html

George...Thanks so much for the link. My sister in law just brought me 2 huge black garbage bags full of cuttings from her neighbors hydrangeas. I have placed them in 6 - 5 gallon buckets filled with water, til I can get to them tomorrow. I have enough to try to root millions of them, but had no idea what to do.
Your link was the perfect place to go!!
Wish me luck!!!!
Thanks again!!

I did 7 large stalks using this method and the water method; they all turned out real fine. They all were from the same plant like this color: Bigleaf Hydrangea

wolf, if you have starts of blue's I would love to have a couple. Postage or trade. Not much to trade for me this time of year - but I can try.

i have started hydrangeas outside before using ziploc bags and they work really well. Now i am using an aquarium with a light on top and they seem to be doing well but i started them outside first. Have any of you guys tried starting them inside? i just put a bunch more in a new aquarium and am doing the rooting prayer...

I have a hydrangea I started this summer by bending a young branch over, putting it on the ground with a small amount of soil over it and placing a rock on top of that. It rooted...and I guess I'll leave it there through the winter and next spring cut it off the mother plant and move it to a new location.

Thanks for posting this! Once they're rooted, will they be okay for overwintering inside until it's warm enough in the spring to plant them outside? Any special treatment over the winter, or should they be treated like houseplants?

Iforget if copper [ pennies ] turn them blue or red - but I think it was blue - Plant opens up to much for me but the wife likes it .

Should I wait til summer to root an Oakleaf? They're just now coming into growth.

Here is a link to a photo storage site where I have my hydrangea propagation process shown.

I just take tip cuttings and stick them in moist potting soil. I do this in august and put the pots in the shade outdoors until november. In early november I move them indoors under growlight for the winter (typically rooted by then) and next spring I transplant to the garden.

Some of the hydrangeas even flower indoors under growlight.
