I just take tip cuttings and stick them in moist potting soil. I do this in august and put the pots in the shade outdoors until november. In early november I move them indoors under growlight for the winter (typically rooted by then) and next spring I transplant to the garden.

Some of the hydrangeas even flower indoors under growlight.
