The Secrets of Super Succulent Sweet Corn

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Yes, am referring to the silks. They should be good and brown and dry (the silks protruding from the end of the ears)...I wouldn't even check on the ears/kernels until you see the silks dry like that.

If you can remember the first day you noticed the ears coming on and silking you can pretty much figure 20 days from that time to begin getting full ears.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

i remember when i first saw maroon silks & thoiught they were ready, boy was i disapointed! you'll know when they are dry Julie, patience :-)

donnafaye~i have grown & enjoyed triple play for an early corn & stowells for a late sweet corn. trying a new one, true gold this year, its about to tassell!

shoe, sure does! i recognized it right off, even before your pic, knew it weren't charlies place cuz of all the forest in the back LOL

Riverview, NB(Zone 5b)

Got an el-cheap-o oil can today and a bottle of mineral oil. I'm ready for em.

20 days, eh? I learn something everytime I come in here. :) This is a good thread.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

My corn is up to my chest now. It's coming. :)

It sure is great, Tamara. It's like a miricle that a small dried up seed that looks pretty ugly, can produce something so grand. Not just corn either, but all seeds. It's truly amazing. The more I plant, the happier it makes me.

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

I plant my corn in small squares, and made 9 different plantings. The fourth square, they are about 8ft square, is just ripening. have had to cover the ears with small paper sacks to keep the blackbirds from eating all the corn. Someone from above suggested that and it works, just more time used. But i love my corn. have had enough to give some to friends. DonnaS

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

My next patch is looking good! Hoping for a harvest end of next week! Yummy! (Looks like I better clean out my freezer and make room!)

And yes, Corny...this thread is loading pretty slow for me; getting long, especially with all the pics.

Oh my Gosh! That corn is BEAUTIFUL, DonnaS. Wow! It towers over you.

I hope mine grows as well.

Ok, here is my first harvest. It tasted so good. Some were funky shaped but it still tasted good. It's Silver Queen.

Juli, That is the first corn I've ever seen that colour. I don't know what else to say about it because I don't know that much. LOL

Victorville, CA

It's called Silver Queen and it's a white corn. It's the first time I've ever grown corn and gotten anything edible off it. There are a lot more ears to harvest. I didn't want to pick them unless we are throwing them into the pot to boil.
-Juli

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Julie64, Bet you liked the Silver Queen. I have grown it in the past and plan to again next year. Good looking ears of corn. DonnaS

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

If you like Silver Queen try the earlier maturing Silver King. About 10 days earlier. Silver Princess is a bout 20 days earlier with smaller ears but just as good. I plant all three at the same time for an extended harvest period.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

oh, yum, save some for me ;-)

Timberlea, NS(Zone 6a)

Is white corn fussier to grow than yellow corn? For some reason, no one around here seems to grow white corn. I've never seen it available in the stores or roadside stands. Neither of my favourite seed places (Veseys or Halifax Seed) carry the seeds.

I wonder if it's one of those cultural things, like some people prefer white eggs, and others prefer brown?

I'm just going to have to grow it myself to find out!

Rhonda

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

Once upon a time, actually 19 th and early 20th century, white corn was all the rage. Howling Mob, Country Gentleman, Stowells EverGreen, Black Mexican, Truckers Favorite (white)... dominated the market. Then came Golden Bantum, and the middle of the 20 the century yellow cultivars dominated. The early hybrids like Golden Cross Bantum and Bantum Evergreen were yellows. The release of Silver Queen in 1960 started a new era in white sweet corns. While the yellows and newer bicolors still out number the whites, Silver Queen and its derivatives are very popular in the fresh market.
And No, the culture is the same. It is just a matter of taste and personal preference.

Victorville, CA

My parents grew up in Iowa and that is all they ever eat. I get to hear stories about how the beef is better cuz in Ia. they have corn fed beef. You can drive by miles after miles of corn fields. Here in Calif. you can find both yellow and white corn at the grocery stores but my mom always said stay away from the yellow, the white is sweeter and more tender, the yellow is what they feed the cows. So I looked for white corn to grow.
Thanks Farmerdill, I will look for those other two and try them also next year.

Emaewest,

Here is a link to get "Silver Princes" and Silver King. Both of these varieties are available to Canadian residents.

Click on the Canadian Customers, then Vegetables, then Corn, then SE White. :)

I've bought quite a lot from them and they're good people to work with.

Maybe I have a problem with my corn, and then again maybe I don't.

I have tassels coming on but I don't see any ears. Problem?

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

Not necessarily. Tassels usually precede the ears.

Riverview, NB(Zone 5b)

Shew!

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Darrell, when your corn tassels open up, a few days later you'll see teeny tiney corncobs peeking out. It's great to see them!

You, and your cornpatch, are doing just fine! Yay! And when you see the little corn ears peeking out, watch for the silks to appear...once you see the silks, mark your calendar. Eighteen to 24 days later you'll have corn...I tend to use '20 days' as a general guide, especially if you are growing a hybrid.

You're gonna be in 7th heaven when you get to pick and eat your very own home-grown corn! Yay!!!

Riverview, NB(Zone 5b)

I'll have to admit, I'm excited. I've never grown corn successfully. I tried it once but didn't know anything about hilling. It fell over. That was the first time and I said, "no more." But, I didn't know about this place either. i.e., Dave's Garden. It's looking pretty good right now. But, like I said, I don't know very much about it yet. So, when I saw the tassells coming out and didn't see any ears starting, I paniced a bit.

I said to myself, "Better go to Daves Garden and get the answer." lol

I can't remember the last time I had fresh corn on the cobb. It's been a long time.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

You got a treat just waiting for ya! Yumm...fresh corn. Boiled corn....steamed corn,.....creamed corn! And...

Grilled corn! Yummy!

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Right now my Serendipty corn is ripe. Actually the 3rd square of my 9 square corn plot, but fourth section to ripen. It is one really good corn. It is both yellow and white kernels, so very tender and sweetness just right for my taste. I could eat fresh corn for every meal and sometimes do. DonnaS

Riverview, NB(Zone 5b)

I'm suppose to be growing this corn so I can sell it. LOL

I think I'm going to have to make sure it's good enough for the customers first though. ;)

It's been years since I had creamed corn. Never had grilled corn.
I have to buy a block of butter. Then save it for the day the corn is ready.

I'm gonna eat and eat and eat and...........................

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

*drool* fried corn...I can just taste it now...

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

DarrellR, I see we are pretty much the same zone . When did you plant your first corn seed. I planted 3 squares of corn seed, 3 varieties on May 10-05, then another 3 squares in June, and my last 3 squares July 9. Hoping for continous corn supply and it is working pretty good. I only plant for myself, and to give a few ears to friends. My biggest problem this year has been the darn blackbirds eating the corn. Never had them do that before. Have had to cover all the ears with paper sacks.

How do they know when it is ripe!!!!!!!!!! DonnaS

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

same way the worms & coons do LOL

tips: A. put water on to boil before going out to corn field
B. Sample first ear in-field, no butter needed
C. boil 3 minutes, turning if needed
D. let cool before sinking teeth in.

often, when eaten fresh, it is so sweet you will THINK it was already buittered

you won't pick it all in one day. try to remeber which stalks tasseled first, start by checking those.

a second or third ear on same stalk is usually ready days later than first

husk it immediately. wrap back up if you like. removing the silks keeps it fresher. i tell customers to use in 24 hrs for best flavor, or at l;east cook it right away, then refig or freeze

they will be back for more! if you don;t eat it all. my triple play corn was so tasty that i would pick it first thing in the AM & have for beakfast! soimetimes ididn't even cook it!

sweet corn, the breakfast for gardeners :-)

tf
ps do we need a new thread?

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Whew!...Just came home from picking about 400 ears. Hot hot hot out there!

My helper is busy blanching and freezing hers. I dropped a bunch off at friend's houses and have 200 or so ears in my cooler, chilling down. Still have much more to pick later this week!

Mercy me, I'm gonna be corn-fed this week!

And Corny, you asked this August 9th ("do we need a new thread? is this getting too long?") and I said "And yes, Corny...this thread is loading pretty slow for me; getting long, especially with all the pics."

But NO>>>>> nobody listens to ol' "Dial-up Shoe"! Waaaaahhhh!!! :>(

Riverview, NB(Zone 5b)

DonnaS,

I'm not sure when I planted it. I'm guessing it was June 17th.

I do have another corn field growing, but I don't really tend to it. I planted it, but have never seen it since I planted it. That particular corn field I planted at the end of May, but can't remember the exact date. AND, that corn field, I started the seeds inside the house here using 3 oz. dixie cups so they would germinate. It was still to cool here to put the seed directly in the soil, the last week of May.

Apparently, the guys are picking corn out of it. They started picking yesterday, so they informed me today. They've picked 60 dozen ears and are bringing it over in the morning. They picked 100 or so pounds of tomatoes, 100 pounds of beans, and 720 ears of corn. They've been busy. :)

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

ok, new thread coming right up, give one-hander a break, will ya!?

here 'tis! http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/538044/

congrats on all the corn etc. harvest Darrell.

and Shoe, what a workout, you need more help! I am on the way... ;-D

Julie, that sure looks tasty! Congratulations!

DonnaS, that sounds like neat planting methods, glad the crows aren't getting it all!

I will have a SMALL patch of corn the end of the month. Another i planted right after my surgery isn't doing as well...
