All hand make. Different styles and colors.
Did I say hand made? Yep I did lol !
Denim? yep I said that! Washable? Yep!

Jus so happened, some years ago I found an opportunity ta buy several thousand pounds of 14 ounce. Six thousand plus. I did!

I'm bragging!
Hundreds of Dusters and other denim clothing later we still lhave a lot!

Hats and purses don't take much material.
Purses were started by a request for a fishing bag.

I'm so jealous! Your corn looks wonderful. We have had sooooo much rain here that my garden is really suffering. When I walk out into the garden I sink in the mud up to my ankles!!!! We haven't had a dry day in so long I can't remember when it didn't rain at all for a whole day. Between the Cindy and Dennis storms we are about to give up on the garden and build an ark!!!

Riverview, NB(Zone 5b)

Gosh darn it, hmstyl, I'm sorry to hear that. But you sound like you are sort of, trying too, appear to be, keeping an upper chin about the whole thing.

I sure do hope it gets better down there for you.

Often times, when those storms hit the US, they come right up the East Coast and land in my yard too. I can appreciate your feelings.

This is the first year in recorded weather history, that some of the Provinces up here have had record heat and rain. A lot of farmers have thrown their hands up in the air and have pretty much said, "That's it. There won't be any farming done this year." They are under water and floods are rampid across the Praries. They got almost two years worth of rain in the month of June.

Darrell

Cleveland, GA(Zone 7a)

well.... I guess I feel better knowing that I am in good company! I've been racking my brain trying to figure out what to plant in all that mud!! I just planted some cucumbers and some giant pumpkin seeds - thinking that they might enjoy lots of water. I'm thinking that maybe they will germinate in the mud and maybe start growing vines by the time we get some sunshine here!

The corn stalks are only about 4 feet tall and puny, but the funny thing is they each have two ears of corn trying to grow! At least that is the one thing a gardner can count on - the plants themselves sure do have a will to survive!

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

One of our corn patches is tasseling and silking now! Am lookin' to picking some in another week or ten days.

When my twin brother came to visit recently we sat in the cornpatch and visited for a bit, trying to encourage the corn to fill out faster!

Hah!! That's hilarious, F-dill! (But I certainly agree w/ya!) :>)

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

well, ya know, it's cause he don't have a beard, so looks younger heehee

i've been pickin corn and pullin taters out of leaf piles one handed

sure tastes good. howver the harlequin bugs have moved to the corn, and appear to be eating the silks, then through the husk sn biting off the top of the c orn, so i had to take some that weren't ready yet. i left one layer of husks on them, now to get them ripe, do i refigerate or not?

please help, surely there is a way...

Wichita, KS(Zone 6b)

I started picking corn yesterday! I really don't have enough room in my backyard for corn but the family begged so hard I told them I'd see what I could do. I decided it was worth the waste of a little seed to see how it would do *intensively* and it seems to have paid off surprisingly well. I planted 4 20 foot rows a foot apart and spaced the plants 8 to 12 inches also. I figured I could reach across that far to keep them cleaned up. This is Silver 'N Gold hybrid and it tastes very good. I don't think this is one of the supersweet hybrids. The corn was such an afterthought I just had to pick up some seed locally and there wasn't much selection left.
Probably a third of the stalks have two ears but I'm uncertain if the second ear will be properly pollinated.

I've got to show my husband this picture so he'll stop complaining about the space I'm going to take up next year. You've shown how much you can grow in a smaller area.

Wichita, KS(Zone 6b)

araness- You should keep in mind that the area I put them in is ver y rich soil. If I'm not mistaken, corn is a heavy nutrient hog. I sidedressed with nitrogen heavy fertilizer once only but I probably should have done so twice. I'll need to direct lots of compost to that area next spring to replenish the soil.

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

I won't be growing corn, it was more your use of space I liked. I have a very small back yard and I'll be using EB's and pots next year (going to have about 30 plants) so I'm going to be taking up a big chunk of the yard.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

looks great vashur. a great way to replinish the soil would be to plant fall beans or peas after you harvest. for pole beans just leave the stalks up. doesn't matter is they can produce before frost, you can turn them under. also, if you get any smut, or if you are rotating your corn for any other reason, potatoes are perfect to follow next year (completely immune to smut fungus!)

araness when is your birthday. have you gotten your EB presents yet?

we are enjoying fresh corn every night this week! our next coen should be ready about the end of august. and if i can get some help, i will plant two more. to be ready in mid sept & early oct.

anyone coming to help tomorow? :-) you can share in the harvest lol

Tamara- Good idea on the beans! I do have some leftover bean seed but I'm a little afraid my family might question my sanity since I've already canned over 80 qts of beans.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

just plant them late so they d on't fully mature :-) and promise the folks there wil be no more pickin' !!!

Riverview, NB(Zone 5b)

Here is a picture I took this morning of the corn. I hilled it a few days ago. I put Bone Meal along the sides of the corn and then hilled it.

Am I suppose to hill it a second time when it gets taller? And do I fertilize it again?

When do you know when to harvest the corn?
-Juli

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

darrel, you look like one happy gardener.... corn'll do that to ya, ya know?

juli, i asked this last year, if i find that thread i'll bump it up or post a link here if you don't get a good answer soon...

start with maturity date, counted from time it came up. sooner with extra rain, later with little rain. silks dry up, then cobbs get full & round if you see littl;e sap beeytles get those ears fast. sometimes the worms or coons will tell you when LOL. i have learned to always peek before i pick. kernals should be plumping up and turning the appropraite color.

send some to me overnight mail, i can check it for you ;-D

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

here is the thread: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/441246/

here is my Q: This is my first year to plant corn, and I should have some soon too (smaller patch). BigRed, how do I know when they are ready??? I remember reading not to peek, it opens then up to earworm etc. The earliest silks are 10 days along, and they are turning a medium burgundy color (this variety of sweet corn is blue, yellow and red colored). Can you help?

A from BigRed: TamaraFaye, usually you can tell just by watching it, when it looks 'plump' you can feel the rows of kernals through the husks. Then I DO take a peek at a couple of ears to see if it's ready :o)...............and mine won't be long now, I peeked at a couple this morning, almost ready!

A from eweed: I look at the silk and feel the plumpness of the ear. When the silk drys and the ear feels fat in the hand it is ripe. This works here but I don't know in hot country if it holds true. Ernie & When the silk gets dry it will stick togeather on the end some corn has redish silk some yellow they both get a look to them when they dry. For eating fresh I like it not to dry, to freeze I like it fully matured.

& just for kicks herre is a recipe which includes fresh corn on the cob...

http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/445011/

now show us your ears, Juli!

Riverview, NB(Zone 5b)

As ya'll know, I hilled the corn when it was around 12 - 15 inches tall and put a side dressing of Bone Meal on it. Now it's almost up to my waste. Do I hill it again, now, or do I wait for it to get taller?

It's lookin really good and I don't want to mess it up.

Thanks.

Darrell

San Jacinto County, TX(Zone 8a)

Main reason I hill, especially tha second time is for support.
Jus don't get into your roots
