Is anyone here attending Le Jardin Botanique de Montreal?

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Le Rendez-vous Horticole (The Great Gardening Weekend) is scheduled for this coming Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (May 27,28,29) at Montreal Botanical Garden.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

p.s.

The event is organized in co-operation with representatives of the horticultural industry in Québec and the Marie-Victorin Foundation, and offers a wide variety of attractions for green thumbs of all ages.

Our Great Gardening Weekend is also a superb opportunity to stock up on plants of all kinds. Growers from across Québec will be on hand, offering the most recent varieties and some of their rarest plant specimens. The Montréal Botanical Garden itself will even be selling some new, rare and forgotten plants - a chance to make some terrific discoveries!

Hawkesbury, ON(Zone 4b)

Hi Lilypon, I will be going to the rendez vous. I have never gone before but this year heeepppppeeee. We had a bad long week end as far as weather goes so I expect a great week end coming up. Will you be attending?

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Thanks for the tip, Pam. I will post it in the Canadian Gardening Events Forum.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Hi Hau! Ü
I *wish* I could attend (if it was just one province away I surely would)......I know Perry from Flora Exotica will have his booth set up there. It sounds like an event not to be missed!!! Have a fantastic visit and please let us know what goodies you saw there and what you purchased. ;)

What do you like collecting?

Do you have a digital camera? :)

Shannon I had no idea how cool a spring the east is having....I was just told that this spring is the coolest Montreal has had in 30 years.

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

It does sound terrific. Now if one only had a magic carpet....

Just a reminder since we have so many new members since I last mentioned it, there is a forum called Dave's Garden Calendar of Events where there is a listing of all the garden events happening in the US and Canada. There is a thread for Canadian Gardening Events where the above event in Montreal is listed along with many other super Gardening Events happening in Canada this year. A link is provided when one is available. Please check it out and a reminder to please drop me a line whenever you hear of any Gardening Event that you feel would be important to pass on. Thanks. Lilypon, this iris has been out for a week. And yes we are having a cold spring. :(

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

It's very pretty :) .....is it an old variety Hau?

Hawkesbury, ON(Zone 4b)

Yes Lilypon. Before moved from NS 15 years ago my sister gave me this iris from her garden that she got a piece of from her x mother inlaw. I took it to Quebec when I moved. When I sold my house in January and moved to Hawkesbury, of course I could not find my iris under the snow and thought that was that, but I gave a piece to my friend there and in the spring she split hers with me. I am not sure how old the variety is but it is a strong one. Multiplies quickly. It is 16 inches high. It is the first one to bloom.

I have one that might be the same....it's one of my favorites! My DH found it in a ditch near where an abandoned farm house stood....the farm house had been razed so that a double highway could be built. That Iris took whatever the big earth moving equipment sent it's way and took off where ever it was dumped.

Celaya, Mexico(Zone 10a)

Yeiks, I'll have to drive across town to get there so I don't know if I'll make it :) :) :) :)

Oh you poor, poor, soul! ;b

Milan you'd better......many here would give their eye teeth to attend that sale!!!! Please, please, please take some pictures!

Covering all bases here.........am hoping all of you lucky attendees take many pretty flower pictures! :) AND pics of Montreal!!! Ü

I will be in touch, Hau! :-) I think I'm going to go up only for the day on Saturday. I've never been to le Jardin Botanique or this event before, and no idea what it'll be like....except to bring lots of $$!

Unfortunately DSO had the nerve to take his camera with him to Saskatchewan this week, so I won't be able to take pics, but maybe someone else will. Pam, if you feel like stepping out your door and shouting at him, face towards Delisle! lolol

Yep, we've been having a cold, rainy spring, that's for sure. A few of our plants in the Maplelawn Historic Garden that don't like wet feet have been rotting. More of the same for the foreseeable future....

BTW here's a link to the Canadian Gardening Events thread that Donna maintains for us all, that she referred to above:

http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/463499/

There's some interesting-looking stuff on there. If we all put our minds to it, we should be able to come up with at least one event this summer within a day trip's distance of each of us!

Shannon

Hawkesbury, ON(Zone 4b)

PanamonCreel , Have you been to this event before.? I am trying to figure out if I need more than one day to enjoy all the events.

And how about everyone crossing there fingers to keep the rain away. Looks as though rain gear will be in fashion again this week end. lol Oh well as my mom would say, "Your sweet but you are not sugar and will not melt"

Montreal, QC(Zone 4b)

Actually, I had the chance to go there last year. The only thing I can say is budget yourself! Depending if you go there with something on your mind (looking for a specific item), one day could be enough. But if you want to attend to the lectures and want to see as much as possible, then you can take your time.

Here apple trees and lilac are blooming but it is still cool for this time of the year.

Ciao

Your DH ears should be burning Shannon.......I spent some time outside this morning waking up the neighbors. ;)

Hau please, please take some pics of Montreal........those that live there seem to have amnesia when it comes to taking pictures of that city.

Hawkesbury, ON(Zone 4b)

Thanks Zarcanat, I am going for the lectures as well as plant hunting, I guess I will be there at least two days.

Lilypon, my camera is ready to go.

Celaya, Mexico(Zone 10a)

Couldn't have answered your questions Hau since I haven't been there before, luckily zarcanat was able to give you the answers you where looking for.
Take a few pictures of the (in)famous toilet bowl for Pam while you are out there ;)
If I go I think I'll go with BMW (Bus, Metro and Walk), that way I can only take as much as I can carry :).

What a weird day, trying to get grass done so I can bugger off for the week end to Montreal, rain then sun then back to rain,

PanamonCreel, I am toying with the idea of driving to dorval and then doing the BMW,for Fri anyway. The thought of trying to get out of city after the garden closes at 5 is pinching me where it hurts. But then if I find some exciting and heavy plant, I will be kicking my butt. I am interested in finding a plant from BG PLANTS that I had last year and had to destroy it because it got tooooooooo big. But I have a place now and the plant is great., if you have room, It is phytolacca americania (poke weed). the people down south will think I am nuts but I love it.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Thank you soooooooooooo very much Hau! :D Ü :D

Others seem to buy cameras only to collect dust. :b

Pam (aka Olda Raatschn),
like you haven't seen any pictures of those dusty cameras? :)

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

They wouldn't have any if you ever took them outside oh Laahwendich one (not counting overseas trips) . ;)

The description must have sound somewhat familiar to you tho......since I didn't name any Montrealer in particular. :^))

edited to say I am very grateful tho for the others that you took for me! :) I just can't seem to get your camera facing any buildings/scenery in downtown Montreal. :(

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

April,

Depending on which direction you're coming into town from, there are several park-and-ride lots on the metro. I usually use the Namur station, as it's handy to the highway from Ottawa. Here's a list in case it comes in handy; it's all in French tho'.

http://www.amt.qc.ca/tc/Stationnements_incitatifs/stationnements.asp

A heck of a lot easier than trying to park downtown, and cheaper too.

I was in Montreal today for a meeting; the potholes haven't improved since last time! ;-)

Shannon

Hawkesbury, ON(Zone 4b)

Lilypon, it is going to be a wet week-end so I will not be visiting old mortreal to get you pics :( but I will get you some of Botanical Gardens. Don't be sad I am sure before the snow flies that we will have a dry week end for picture taking. :)

Spklatt, thanks for link. I generally park at Dorval train/bus. I don't want to be stuck getting through Lachine. Got my rain gear ready. 70% change of rain for Ottawa but only 40 for Montreal. And it is off I go.

Celaya, Mexico(Zone 10a)

Shannon, yep the potholes are as bad as they've always been. These days they sell the "Smart" car and few more of those little cars on the road should be able to fill the larger potholes in town :).

Hau, yep Dorval train station and Bus 221 to the Metro is a good choice. http://www.stcum.qc.ca/English/bus/GEOMET/A-GEO221.htm
I always drive from work out west to Dorval and traffic until Dorval Ave. is usually low. Recommended route from Hawkesbury would be Hwy 40 until St. Charles then down St. Charles to Hwy 20 east. There's construction on Hwy 40 east after St. Charles and there's construction on Boul. des Sources so avoid going there to drive between Highways 20 and 40.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

lol about the Smart car, Milan! Yep, some of those bigger potholes could swallow one up, no problem. You're right about the #40 - come to think of it, I've never seen it not being under construction. Maybe I will try your route as well.

I look forward to seeing Perry's booth. April, I should be getting there around 10 so will call you on your cell sometime late morning - maybe we can grab a bit to eat or if you have plans, just a quick hi.

Shannon

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Thank you Hau!!! Ü Hopefully the next time you are there the sun will be shining!

Montreal, QC(Zone 4b)

Hi, I will be the first to give you pics or I am not a Montrealer ;-))
I found jewels for my precious hummers and guess what, I succeed in budgetting under 40$ That's a deal!!! If it was not for a tropical bush, mean price is about 5$ for a 4 inches pot of nice annual. There was bonsaï, alpine gardens, succulents, annuals, perenials, exotics, orchids, bambous and more. I did not look at anything but plants, but I took care to get some pics from nice floral arrangements and furniture for you.
